Magnetization manipulation is becoming an indispensable tool for both basic and applied research. Theory predicts two types of ultrafast demagnetization dynamics classified as type I and type II. In type II materials, a second slower process takes place after the initial fast drop of magnetization. In this letter we investigate this behavior for FePt recording materials with perpendicular anisotropy. The magnetization dynamics have been simulated using a thermal micromagnetic model based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation. We identify a transition to type II behavior and relate it to the electron temperatures reached by the laser heating. This slowing down is a fundamental limit to reconding speeds in heat assisted reversal.

We compare femtosecond pump-probe experiments in Ni and micromagnetic modelling based on the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equation coupled to a two-temperature model, revealing a predominant thermal ultrafast demagnetization mechanism. We show that both spi n (femtosecond demagnetization) and electron-phonon (magnetization recovery) rates in Ni increase as a function of the laser pump fluence. The slowing down for high fluences arises from the increased longitudinal relaxation time.
Spin and orbital angular momenta are two intrinsic properties of an electron and are responsible for the physics of a solid. How the spin and orbital evolve with respect to each other on several hundred femtoseconds is largely unknown, but it is at t he center of laser-induced ultrafast demagnetization. In this paper, we introduce a concept of the spin-orbital correlation diagram, where spin angular momentum is plotted against orbital angular momentum, much like the position-velocity phase diagram in classical mechanics. We use four sets of highly accurate time-resolved x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (TR-XMCD) data to construct four correlation diagrams for iron and cobalt. To our surprise, a pattern emerges. The trace on the correlation diagram for iron is an arc, and at the end of demagnetization, it has a pronounced cusp. The correlation diagram for cobalt is different and appears more linear, but with kinks. We carry out first-principles calculations with two different methods: time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) and time-dependent Liouville density functional theory (TDLDFT). These two methods agree that the experimental findings for both Fe and Co are not due t experimental errors. It is the spin-orbit coupling that correlates the spin dynamics to the orbital dynamics.Microscopically, Fe and Co have different orbital occupations, which leads to distinctive correlation diagrams. We believe that this correlation diagram presents a useful tool to better understand spin and orbital dynamics on an ultrafast time scale. A brief discussion on the magnetic anisotropy energy is also provided.
We describe the design and fabrication of novel all-magnetic atom chips for use in ultracold atom trapping. The considerations leading to the choice of nanocrystalline exchange coupled FePt as best material are discussed. Using stray field calculatio ns, we designed patterns that function as magnetic atom traps. These patterns were realized by spark erosion of FePt foil and e-beam lithography of FePt film. A mirror magneto-optical trap (MMOT) was obtained using the stray field of the foil chip.
We report spin-orbit torques (SOT) in L10-ordered perpendicularly magnetized FePt single layer, which is significantly influenced by disorder. Recently, self-induced SOT in L10-FePt single layer has been investigated, which is ascribed to the composi tion gradient along the film normal direction. However, the determined mechanisms for magnetization switching have not been fully studied. With varying growth temperatures, we have prepared FePt single layers with same thickness (3 nm) but with different disordering. We have found that nearly full magnetization switching only happens in more disordered films, and the magnetization switching ratio becomes smaller as increasing L10 ordering. The method for deriving effective spin torque fields in the previous studies cannot fully explain the spin current generation and self-induced SOT in L10-FePt single layer. Combined with Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect microscopy and anomalous Hall effect measurements, we concluded that the disorder should determine the formation of domain walls, as well as the spin current generation.

Manipulation of magnetization with ultrashort laser pulses is promising for information storage device applications. The dynamic of the magnetization response depends on the energy transfer from the photons to the spins during the initial laser excit ation. A material of special interest for magnetic storage is FePt nanoparticles , on which optical writing with optical angular momentum was demonstrated recently by Lambert et al., although the mechanism remained unclear. Here we investigate experimentally and theoretically the all-optical switching of FePt nanoparticles. We show that the magnetization switching is a stochastic process. We develop a complete multiscale model which allows us to optimize the number of laser shots needed to write the magnetization of high anisotropy FePt nanoparticles in our experiments. We conclude that only angular momentum induced optically by the inverse Faraday effect will provide switching with one single femtosecond laser pulse.
