Annealing of Bi,Pb-2223/Ag composites in (O2+N2) atmosphere at 820-780C is believed to reduce the number of the accompanying phases, to make contacts between crystallites closer and to increase the critical current. The goals of this study were to reveal the changes in the 2223 lattice at annealing in the reduced oxygen atmosphere, to elucidate the reasons of these changes and to discuss their effect on the ceramics superconductivity. After the annealing the transversely-polarized displacement waves of oxygen atoms in [010]2223 direction have been found in the 2223 phase by electron diffraction analysis. These waves could appear due to the lack of oxygen in the 2223 lattice or to the nitrogen penetration in it. As demonstrated by the X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy and nuclear microanalysis, nitrogen does not interact with the 2223 lattice, and the oxygen index decreases to 9.67, which is lower than the stoichiometric. Thus, the atomic displacement waves result from the lack of oxygen in Bi-O bilayers.

We report the pressure effect in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+{delta} (Bi-2223) single crystal with a small amount of intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+{delta} (Bi-2212). Their superconducting transition temperatures Tcs showed a domelike shape as a function of pressu re, which showed a good agreement with the general relation between the carrier concentration and Tc. Our experimental results indicate that high pressure can induce effective carrier doping into the multilayered high-Tc cuprate superconductor

To investigate the origin of the enhanced Tc ({approx} 110 K) of the trilayer cuprate superconductor Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+{delta} (Bi-2223), its underdoped single crystals are a critical requirement. Here, we demonstrate the first successful in-plane resi stivity measurements of heavily underdoped Bi-2223 (zero-resistivity temperatures {approx} 20~35 K). Detailed crystal growth methods, the annealing process, as well as X-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic susceptibility measurement results are also reported.
The oxygen dopants are essential in tuning electronic properties of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+4+delta}$ superconductors. Here we apply the technique of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the influence of oxygen dopants i n an optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+delta}$ and an overdoped Bi$_{2-y}$Pb$_y$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+delta}$. In both samples, we find that interstitial oxygen atoms on the SrO layers dominate over the other two forms of oxygen dopants, oxygen vacancies on the SrO layers and interstitial oxygen atoms on the BiO layers. The hole doping is estimated from the oxygen concentration, as compared to the result extracted from the measured Fermi surface. The precise spatial location is employed to obtain a negative correlation between the oxygen dopants and the inhomogeneous pseudogap.
We report a temperature-dependent increase below 300 K of diffuse superlattice peaks corresponding to q_0 =(~2/5,0,0) in an under-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x superconductor (x~0.63). These peaks reveal strong c-axis correlations involving the CuO_2 bilayers , show a non-uniform increase below ~220 K with a plateau for ~100-160 K, and appear to saturate in the superconducting phase. We interpret this unconventional T-dependence of the ``oxygen-ordering peaks as a manifestation of a charge density wave in the CuO_2 planes coupled to the oxygen-vacancy ordering.

We have studied electrical transport properties of a high quality Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x crystal below a superconducting critical temperature, Tc. In magnetic fields B parallel to the c-axis just above a voltage response onset resistance vs temperature da ta are well fitted to the vortex-glass model. Obtained from the vortex-glass analysis a melting transition boundary for Bi-2223 crystal shifted towards lower temperatures compared to previously reported data for a (Bi,Pb)-2223 single crystal. The critical current density, Jc, of Bi-2223 crystals is close to presented elsewhere Jc values for Bi-2223 tapes suggesting a principal role of weak intrinsic pinning properties of Bi-2223 as a main limiting factor of Jc of Bi-2223 conductors.
