A chiral $p_x+ip_y$ superconductor on a square lattice with nearest and next-nearest hopping and pairing terms is considered. Gap closures, as various parameters of the system are varied, are found analytically and used to identify the topological phases. The phases are characterized by Chern numbers (ranging from -3 to 3), and (numerically) by response to introduction of weak disorder, edges, and magnetic fields in an extreme type-II limit, focusing on the low-energy modes (which presumably become zero-energy Majorana modes for large lattices and separations). Several phases are found, including a phase with Chern number 3 that cannot be thought of in terms of a single range of interaction, and phase with Chern number 2 that may host an additional, disorder resistant, Majorana mode. The energies of the vortex quasiparticle modes were found to oscillate as vortex position varied. The spatial length scale of these oscillations was found for various points in the Chern number 3 phase which increased as criticality was approached.

Photoemission spectra of underdoped and lightly-doped Bi$_{2-z}$Pb$_z$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}${it R}$_{x}$Cu$_2$O$_{8+y}$ ($R=$ Pr, Er) (BSCCO) have been measured and compared with those of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). The lower-Hubbard band of the insula ting BSCCO, like Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, shows a stronger dispersion than La$_2$CuO$_4$ from ${bf k}sim$($pi/2,pi/2$) to $sim$($pi,0$). The flat band at ${bf k}sim$($pi,0$) is found generally deeper in BSCCO. These observations together with the Fermi-surface shapes and the chemical potential shifts indicate that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $|t^{prime}|$ of the single-band model is larger in BSCCO than in LSCO and that $|t^{prime}|$ rather than the super-exchange $J$ influences the pseudogap energy scale.
We study the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice, including on-site (U) and nearest-neighbor (V) interactions, at weak couplings. We show that the charge-density-wave phase that is known to occur at half-fi lling when 4V > U gives way to a d_{xy} -wave superconducting instability away from half-filling, when the Fermi surface is not perfectly nested, and for sufficiently large repulsive and a range of on-site repulsive interaction. In addition, when nesting is further suppressed and in presence of a nearest-neighbor attraction, a triplet time-reversal breaking (p_x + ip_y)-wave pairing instability emerges, competing with the d_{x2+y2} pairing state that is known to dominate at fillings just slightly away from half. At even smaller fillings, where the Fermi surface no longer presents any nesting, the (p_x +ip_y)-wave superconducting phase dominates in the whole regime of on-site repulsions and nearest-neighbor attractions, while d_{xy}-pairing occurs in the presence of on-site attraction. Our results suggest that zero-energy Majorana fermions can be realized on a square lattice in the presence of a magnetic field. For a system of cold fermionic atoms on a two-dimensional square optical lattice, both an on-site repulsion and a nearest-neighbor attraction would be required, in addition to rotation of the system to create vortices. We discuss possible ways of experimentally engineering the required interaction terms in a cold atom system.
We present a reconfigurable topological photonic system consisting of a 2D lattice of coupled ring resonators, with two sublattices of site rings coupled by link rings, which can be accurately described by a tight-binding model. Unlike previous coupl ed-ring topological models, the design is translationally invariant, similar to the Haldane model, and the nontrivial topology is a result of next-nearest couplings with non-zero staggered phases. The system exhibits a topological phase transition between trivial and spin Chern insulator phases when the sublattices are frequency detuned. Such topological phase transitions can be easily induced by thermal or electro-optic modulators, or nonlinear cross phase modulation. We use this lattice to design reconfigurable topological waveguides, with potential applications in on-chip photon routing and switching.
Topological superconductors are one of the most actively studied materials these days. They are a promising candidate for hosting Majorana fermions either on their boundaries or in vortex cores. Detecting 1D edge current around the periphery of a 2D $p_x + ip_y$ superconductor would be a hallmark signature of topological superconductivity, but Majorana fermions are not amenable to electronic current measurements due to their charge neutral nature. Thermal conductivity measurements, such as thermal Hall effect, are alternatively proposed, but material synthesis must come first. Superfluid $^3$He-$A$, on the other hand, is a known $p_x + ip_y$ superfluid whose edge current can be measured with a gyroscopic technique. Here, we propose a microelectromechanical system based gyroscope that will not only have enough signal sensitivity to measure the edge current but also be used to observe dimensionality induced phase transitions between different topological superfluids.
The dynamics of the one-dimensional random transverse Ising model with both nearest-neighbor (NN) and next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) interactions is studied in the high-temperature limit by the method of recurrence relations. Both the time-dependent tra nsverse correlation function and the corresponding spectral density are calculated for two typical disordered states. We find that for the bimodal disorder the dynamics of the system undergoes a crossover from a collective-mode behavior to a central-peak one and for the Gaussian disorder the dynamics is complex. For both cases, it is found that the central-peak behavior becomes more obvious and the collective-mode behavior becomes weaker as $K_{i}$ increase, especially when $K_{i}>J_{i}/2$ ($J_{i}$ and $K_{i}$ are exchange couplings of the NN and NNN interactions, respectively). However, the effects are small when the NNN interactions are weak ($K_{i}<J_{i}/2$).
