We consider propagating, spatially localised waves in a class of equations that contain variational and non-variational terms. The dynamics of the waves is analysed through a collective coordinate approach. Motivated by the variational approximation, we show that there is a natural choice of projection onto collective variables for reducing the governing (nonlinear) partial differential equation (PDE) to coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs). This projection produces ODEs whose solutions are exactly the stationary states of the effective Lagrangian that would be considered from applying the variational approximation method. We illustrate our approach by applying it to a modified Fisher equation for a travelling front, containing a non-constant-coefficient nonlinear term. We present numerical results that show that our proposed projection captures both the equilibria and the dynamics of the PDE much more closely than previously proposed projections.

We study the relationship between the partially synchronous state and the coupling structure in general dynamical systems. Our results show that, on the contrary to the widely accepted concept, topological symmetry in a coupling structure is the suff icient condition but not the necessary condition. Furthermore, we find the necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of the partial synchronization and develop a method to obtain all of the existing partially synchronous solutions for all nonspecific dynamics from a very large number of possible candidates.
We present a first-principles derivation of the variational equations describing the dynamics of the interaction of a spatial soliton and a surface plasmon polariton (SPP) propagating along a metal/dielectric interface. The variational ansatz is base d on the existence of solutions exhibiting differentiated and spatially resolvable localized soliton and SPP components. These states, referred to as soliplasmons, can be physically understood as bound states of a soliton and a SPP. Their respective dispersion relations permit the existence of a resonant interaction between them, as pointed out in Ref.[1]. The existence of soliplasmon states and their interesting nonlinear resonant behavior has been validated already by full-vector simulations of the nonlinear Maxwells equations, as reported in Ref.[2]. Here, we provide the theoretical demonstration of the nonlinear resonator model previously introduced in our previous work and analyze all the approximations needed to obtain it. We also provide some extensions of the model to improve its applicability.

Variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) optimizes parameterized eigenstates of a Hamiltonian on a quantum processor by updating parameters with a classical computer. Such a hybrid quantum-classical optimization serves as a practical way to leverage up classical algorithms to exploit the power of near-term quantum computing. Here, we develop a hybrid algorithm for VQE, emphasizing the classical side, that can solve a group of related Hamiltonians simultaneously. The algorithm incorporates a snake algorithm into many VQE tasks to collectively optimize variational parameters of different Hamiltonians. Such so-called collective VQEs~(cVQEs) is applied for solving molecules with varied bond length, which is a standard problem in quantum chemistry. Numeral simulations show that cVQE is not only more efficient in convergence, but also trends to avoid single VQE task to be trapped in local minimums. The collective optimization utilizes intrinsic relations between related tasks and may inspire advanced hybrid quantum-classical algorithms for solving practical problems.
Simulation of contact and friction dynamics is an important basis for control- and learning-based algorithms. However, the numerical difficulties of contact interactions pose a challenge for robust and efficient simulators. A maximal-coordinate repre sentation of the dynamics enables efficient solving algorithms, but current methods in maximal coordinates require constraint stabilization schemes. Therefore, we propose an interior-point algorithm for the numerically robust treatment of rigid-body dynamics with contact interactions in maximal coordinates. Additionally, we discretize the dynamics with a variational integrator to prevent constraint drift. Our algorithm achieves linear-time complexity both in the number of contact points and the number of bodies, which is shown theoretically and demonstrated with an implementation. Furthermore, we simulate two robotic systems to highlight the applicability of the proposed algorithm.
We apply The Batalin-Tyutin constraint formalism of converting a second class system into a first class system for the rotational quantisation of the SU(2) Skyrme model. We obtain the first class constraint and the Hamiltonian in the extended phase s pace. The vacuum functional is constructed and evaluated in the unitary gauge and a multiplier dependent gauge. Finally, we discuss the spectrum of the extended theory. The use of the BT formalism on the collective coordinates quantisation of the SU(2) Skyrme model leads an additional term in the usual quantum Hamiltonian that can improve the phenomenology predicted by the Skyrme model.
