We study analytically the chiral phase transition for hot quark matter in presence of a strong magnetic background, focusing on the existence of a critical point at zero baryon chemical potential and nonzero magnetic field. We build up a Ginzburg-Landau effective potential for the chiral condensate at finite temperature, computing the coefficients of the expansion within a chiral quark-meson model. Our conclusion is that the existence of the critical point at finite $bm B$ is very sensitive to the way the ultraviolet divergences of the model are treated. In particular, we find that after renormalization, no chiral critical point is present in the phase diagram. On the other hand, such a critical point there exists when the ultraviolet divergences are not removed by a proper renormalization of the thermodynamic potential.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is an exact statement that connects via the axial anomaly the electric current in a system consisting of interacting fermions and gauge field with chirality imbalance that is put into a strong external magnetic field. Experimental search of the magnetically induced current in QCD in heavy ion collisions above a pseudocritical temperature hints, though not yet conclusive, that the induced current is either small or vanishing. This would imply that the chirality imbalance in QCD above $T_c$ that could be generated via topological fluctuations is at most very small. Here we present the most general reason for absence (smallness) of the chirality imbalance in QCD above Tc. It was recently found on the lattice that QCD above Tc is approximately chiral spin (CS) symmetric with the symmetry breaking at the level of a few percent. The CS transformations mix the right- and left-handed components of quarks. Then an exact CS symmetry would require absence of any chirality imbalance. Consequently an approximate CS symmetry admits at most a very small chirality imbalance in QCD above Tc. Hence the absence or smallness of an magnetically induced current observed in heavy ion collisions could be considered as experimental evidence for emergence of the CS symmetry above Tc.
We reconsider the problem of calculating the vacuum free energy (density) of QCD and the shift of the quark condensates in the presence of a uniform background magnetic field using two-and-three-flavor chiral perturbation theory ($chi$PT). Using the free energy, we calculate the degenerate, light quark condensates in the two-flavor case and the up, down and strange quark condensates in the three-flavor case. We also use the vacuum free energy to calculate the (renormalized) magnetization of the QCD vacuum, which shows that it is paramagnetic. We find that the three-flavor light-quark condensates and (renormalized) magnetization are improvements on the two-flavor results. We also find that the average light quark condensate is in agreement with the lattice up to $eB=0.2 {rm GeV^{2}}$, and the (renormalized) magnetization is in agreement up to $eB=0.3 {rm GeV^{2}}$, while three-flavor $chi$PT, which gives a non-zero shift in the difference between the light quark condensates unlike two-flavor $chi$PT, underestimates the difference compared to lattice QCD.
We present two-loop results for the quark condensate in an external magnetic field within chiral perturbation theory using coordinate space techniques. At finite temperature, we explore the impact of the magnetic field on the pion-pion interaction in the quark condensate for arbitrary pion masses and derive the correct weak magnetic field expansion in the chiral limit. At zero temperature, we provide the complete two-loop representation for the vacuum energy density and the quark condensate.
We extend the Polyakov-loop extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model by introducing an effective four-quark vertex depending on Polyakov loop. The effective vertex generates entanglement interactions between Polyakov loop and chiral condensate. The n ew model is consistent with lattice QCD data at imaginary quark-number chemical potential and real and imaginary isospin chemical potentials, particularly on strong correlation between the chiral and deconfinement transitions and also on the quark-mass dependence of the order of the Roberge-Weiss endpoint predicted by lattice QCD very lately. We investigate an influence of the entanglement interactions on a location of the tricritical point at real isospin chemical potential and a location of the critical endpoint at real quark-number chemical potential.
We have computed the chiral susceptibility in quark-gluon plasma in presence of finite chemical potential and weak magnetic field within hard thermal loop approximation. First we construct the massive effective quark propagator in a thermomagnetic me dium. Then we obtain completely analytic expression for the chiral susceptibility in weak magnetic field approximation. In the absence of magnetic field the thermal chiral susceptibility increases in presence of finite chemical potential. The effect of thermomagnetic correction is found to be very marginal as temperature is the dominant scale in weak field approximation.
