We study the ternary clathrate Pr3Pd20Si6 in specific heat and AC-susceptibility measurements on a high-quality single crystal, distinguishing antiferromagnetic (AFM) and antiferroquadrupolar (AFQ) ordering on two sublattices of inequivalent Pr sites. The specific heat shows the direct involvement of nuclear spin degrees of freedom in the AFM ordering, which is well supported by our calculation of the hyperfine level scheme without adjustable parameters. Pr3Pd20Si6 is therefore one of the rare materials where the nuclear moments are involved in the formation of the magnetic ground state.

We present the first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of SrCoO$_{3-delta}$ ($delta=0, 0.25, 0.5$) to understand the multivalent nature of Co ions in SrCoO$_{3-delta}$ along the line of topotactic transit ion between perovskite SrCoO$_{3}$ and brownmillerite SrCoO$_{2.5}$. From the on-site Coulomb interaction $U$-dependent ground state of stoichiometric SrCoO$_{3}$, we show the proximity of its metallic ferromagnetic ground state to other antiferromagnetic states. The structural and magnetic properties of SrCoO$_{3-delta}$ depending on their oxygen-content provide an interesting insight into the relationship between the Co-Co distances and the magnetic couplings so that the spin-state transition of Co spins can understood by the change of $pd$-hybridization depending on the Co-Co distances. The emph{strong} suppression of the $dpsigma$-hybridization between Co $d$ and O $p$ orbitals in brownmillerite SrCoO$_{2.5}$ brings on the high-spin state of Co$^{3+}$ $d^{6}$ and is responsible for the antiferromagnetically ordered insulating ground state. The increase of effective Co-Co distances driven by the presence of oxygen vacancies in SrCoO$_{3-delta}$ is consistent with the reduction of the effective $pd$-hybridization between Co $d$ and O $p$ orbitals. We conclude that the configuration of neighboring Co spins is shown to be crucial to their local electronic structure near the metal-to-insulator transition along the line of the topotactic transition in SrCoO$_{3-delta}$. Incidentally, we also find that the textit{I2mb} symmetry of SrCoO$_{2.5}$ is energetically stable and exhibits ferroelectricity via the ordering of CoO$_{4}$ tetrahedra, where this polar lattice can be stabilized by the presence of a large activation barrier.

We used Raman scattering to study the lattice and magnetic excitations in the hexagonal HoMnO3 single crystals. The E2 phonon mode at 237 cm-1 is affected by the magnetic order. This mode is related to the displacement of Mn and O ions in a-b plane a nd modulates the Mn-O-Mn bond angles in a-b plane and the in-plane Mn-Mn superexchange interaction. The mode at 269 cm-1 associated to the displacement of the apical Ho3+ ions along the c direction presents an abrupt change of slope at TN showing that the role of the rare earth ions can not be neglected in the magnetic transition. We have identified magnon and crystal field excitations. The temperature dependence of the magnetic excitations has been compared to the Mn and Ho moment and indicates that the exchange interaction pattern between Mn and Ho atoms drives the uniaxial anisotropy gap above the Mn-spin-rotation transition.
The antiferroquadrupolar ordering of PrFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ is explored by probing thermal and thermoelectric transport. The lattice thermal conductivity drastically increases with the ordering, as a consequence of a large drop in carrier concentration a nd a strong electron-phonon coupling. The low level of carrier density in the ordered state is confirmed by the anomalously large values of the Seebeck and Nernst coefficients. The results are reminiscent of URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ and suggest that both belong to the same class of aborted metal-insulator transitions. The magnitude of the Nernst coefficient, larger than in any other metal, indicates a new route for Ettingshaussen cooling at Kelvin temperatures.
High resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering has been performed to reveal the role of lattice-coupling in a family of quasi-1D insulating cuprates, Ca$_{2+5x}$Y$_{2-5x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$. Site-dependent low energy excitations arising from progres sive emissions of a 70 meV lattice vibrational mode are resolved for the first time, providing a direct measurement of electron-lattice coupling strength. We show that such electron-lattice coupling causes doping-dependent distortions of the Cu-O-Cu bond angle, which sets the intra-chain spin exchange interactions. Our results indicate that the lattice degrees of freedom are fully integrated into the electronic behavior in low dimensional systems.
We present acoustic signatures of the electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in the honeycomb-layer compound UNi$_4$B. The transverse ultrasonic mode $C_{66}$ shows softening below 30 K both in the paramagnetic phase and antiferromagnetic phases dow n to $sim0.33$ K. Furthermore, we traced magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams up to 30 T and observed a highly anisotropic elastic response within the honeycomb layer. These observations strongly suggest that $Gamma_6$(E$_{rm 2g}$) electric quadrupolar degrees of freedom in localized $5f^2$ ($J = 4$) states are playing an important role in the magnetic toroidal dipole order and magnetic-field-induced phases of UNi$_4$B, and evidence some of the U ions remain in the paramagnetic state even if the system undergoes magnetic toroidal ordering.
