We present new z- and H-band photometry and proper motion measurements for the five candidate very-low-mass T-type objects we recently proposed to be members of the nearest OB association to the Sun, Upper Scorpius. These new data fail to corroborate our prior conclusions regarding their spectral types and affiliation with the Upper Scorpius population. We conclude that we may be in presence of a turnover in the mass function of Upper Sco taking place below 10-4 Jupiter masses, depending on the age assigned to Upper Sco and the models used.

(Abridged) We report on the near-infrared low-resolution spectroscopy and red optical (Z-band) photometry of seven proper-motion, very low-mass substellar member candidates of the Pleiades cluster with magnitudes in the interval J=17.5-20.8 and K=16. 1-18.5 mag. Spectra were acquired for six objects with the LIRIS and NIRSPEC instruments mounted on the 4.2-m WHT and the 10-m Keck II telescopes. Z-band images of two of the faintest candidates were collected with ACAM/WHT. The new data confirm the low temperatures of all seven Pleiades candidates. From the imaging observations, we find extremely red Z-J and Z-K colors that suggest that the faintest target, Calar Pleiades 25, has a Galactic rather than extragalactic nature. We tentatively classify the spectroscopic targets from early-L to ~T0 and suggest that the L/T transition, which accounts for the onset of methane absorption at 2.1 micron, may take place at J,K ~ 20.3, 17.8 mag in the Pleiades (absolute values of M_J ~ 14.7 and M_K ~ 12.2 mag). We find evidence of likely low-gravity atmospheres based on the presence of triangular-shape H-band fluxes and the high flux ratio K/H (compatible with red H-K colors) of Calar Pleiades 20, 21, and 22, which is a feature also seen in field low-gravity dwarfs. Weak KI absorption lines at around 1.25 micron are probably seen in two targets. These observations add support to the cluster membership of all seven objects in the Pleiades. The trend delineated by the spectroscopic sequence of Pleiades late-M and L dwarfs resembles that of the field. With masses estimated at 0.012-0.015 Msol (solar metallicity and 120 Myr), Calar Pleiades 20 (L6 +/- 1), 21 (L7 +/- 1), and 22 (L/T) may become the coolest and least massive Pleiades members that are corroborated with photometry, astrometry, and spectroscopy. Calar Pleiades 25 (<0.012 Msol) is a firm free-floating planetary-mass candidate in the Pleiades.
Proper motion measurements of the cool and ultracool populations in the Upper Scorpius OB association are crucial to confirm membership and to identify possible run-away objects. We cross-match samples of photometrically selected and spectroscopica lly confirmed cool and ultracool (K5<SpT<M8.5) candidate members in the Upper Scorpius OB association using the literature and the USNO-B and the UCAC2 catalogues. 251 of these objects have a USNO-B and/or UCAC2 counterpart with proper motion measurements. A significant fraction (19 objects, 7.6+-1.8%) of spectroscopically confirmed young objects show discrepant proper motion. They must either belong to unidentified coincident foreground associations, or originate from neighboring star forming regions or have recently experienced dynamical interactions within the association. The observed accretor and disc frequencies are lower among outliers, but with only 19 objects it is unreliable to draw firm statistical conclusions. Finally, we note that transverse velocities of very low mass members are indistinguishable from those of low mass members within 4km/s
We describe a new method for determining proper motions of extended objects, and a pipeline developed for the application of this method. We then apply this method to an analysis of four epochs of [S~II] HST images of the HH~1 jet (covering a period of $sim 20$~yr). We determine the proper motions of the knots along the jet, and make a reconstruction of the past ejection velocity time-variability (assuming ballistic knot motions). This reconstruction shows an acceleration of the ejection velocities of the jet knots, with higher velocities at more recent times. This acceleration will result in an eventual merging of the knots in $sim 450$~yr and at a distance of $sim 80$ from the outflow source, close to the present-day position of HH~1.
We present a catalog of 9888 M, L and T dwarfs detected in the Pan-STARRS1 3$pi$ Survey (PS1), covering three-quarters of the sky. Our catalog contains nearly all known objects of spectral types L0-T2 in the PS1 field, with objects as early as M0 and as late as T9, and includes PS1, 2MASS, AllWISE, and Gaia DR1 photometry. We analyze the different types of photometry reported by PS1, and use two types in our catalog to maximize both depth and accuracy. Using parallaxes from the literature, we construct empirical SEDs for field ultracool dwarfs spanning 0.5-12 $mu$m. We determine typical colors of M0-T9 dwarfs, and we highlight the distinctive colors of subdwarfs and young objects. Our catalog includes 492 L dwarfs detected in $r_{rm P1}$, the largest sample of L dwarfs detected at such blue wavelengths. We combine astrometry from PS1, 2MASS, and Gaia DR1 to calculate new proper motions for our catalog. We achieve a median precision of 2.9 mas yr$^{-1}$, a factor of $approx$3-10 improvement over previous large catalogs. Our catalog contains proper motions for 2405 M6-T9 dwarfs and includes the largest set of homogeneous proper motions for L and T dwarfs published to date, 406 objects for which there were no previous measurements, and 1176 objects for which we improve upon previous literature values. We analyze the kinematics of ultracool dwarfs in our catalog and find evidence that bluer but otherwise generic late-M and L field dwarfs (i.e., not subdwarfs) tend to have higher tangential velocities compared to typical field objects. With the public release of the PS1 data, this survey will continue to be an essential tool for characterizing the ultracool dwarf population.
We present measurements of internal proper motions at more than five hundred positions of NGC 2392, the Eskimo Nebula, based on images acquired with WFPC2 on board the Hubble Space Telescope at two epochs separated by 7.695 years. Comparison of the t wo observations shows clearly the expansion of the nebula. We measured the amplitude and direction of the motion of local structures in the nebula by determining their relative shift during that interval. In order to assess the potential uncertainties in the determination of proper motions in this object, and in general, the measurements were performed using two different methods, used previously in the literature. We compare the results from the two methods, and to perform the scientific analysis of the results we choose one, the cross-correlation method, as the more reliable. We go on to perform a criss-cross mapping analysis on the proper motion vectors which helps in the interpretation of the velocity pattern. Combining our results on the proper motions with radial velocity measurements obtained from high resolution spectroscopic observations, and employing an existing 3D model, we estimate the distance to the nebula as 1300 pc.
