We theoretically investigate the terahertz dielectric response of a semiconductor slab hosting an infrared photoinduced grating. The periodic structure is due to the charge carries photo-excited by the interference of two tilted infrared plane waves so that the grating depth and period can be tuned by modifying the beam intensities and incidence angles, respectively. In the case where the grating period is much smaller than the terahertz wavelength, we numerically evaluate the ordinary and extraordinary component of the effective permittivity tensor by resorting to electromagnetic full-wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charge carries excited by infrared radiation. We show that the photoinduced metamaterial optical response can be tailored by varying the grating and it ranges from birefringent to hyperbolic to anisotropic negative dielectric without resorting to microfabrication.

We theoretically consider infrared-driven hyperbolic metamaterials able to spatially filtering terahertz radiation. The metamaterial is a slab made of alternating semiconductor and dielectric layers whose homogenized uniaxial response, at terahertz f requencies, shows principal permittivities of different signs. The gap provided by metamaterial hyperbolic dispersion allows the slab to stop spatial frequencies within a bandwidth tunable by changing the infrared radiation intensity. We numerically prove the device functionality by resorting to full wave simulation coupled to the dynamics of charge carries photoexcited by infrared radiation in semiconductor layers.
Epsilon-Near-Zero materials exhibit a transition in the real part of the dielectric permittivity from positive to negative value as a function of wavelength. Here we study metal-dielectric layered metamaterials in the homogenised regime (each layer h as strongly subwavelength thickness) with zero real part of the permittivity in the near-infrared region. By optically pumping the metamaterial we experimentally show that close to the Epsilon-Equal-to-Zero (EEZ) wavelength the permittivity exhibits a marked transition from metallic (negative permittivity) to dielectric (positive permittivity) as a function of the optical power. Remarkably, this transition is linear as a function of pump power and occurs on time scales of the order of the 100 fs pump pulse that need not be tuned to a specific wavelength. The linearity of the permittivity increase allows us to express the response of the metamaterial in terms of a standard third order optical nonlinearity: this shows a clear inversion of the roles of the real and imaginary parts in crossing the EEZ wavelength, further supporting an optically induced change in the physical behaviour of the metamaterial.
Recently, phase-change materials (PCMs) have drawn more attention due to the dynamically tunable optical properties. Here, we investigate the active control of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) analogue based on terahertz (THz) metamater ials integrated with vanadium oxide (VO2). Utilizing the insulator-to-metal transition of VO2, the amplitude of EIT peak can be actively modulated with a significant modulation depth. Meanwhile the group delay within the transparent window can also be dynamically tuned, achieving the active control of slow light effect. Furthermore, we also introduce independently tunable transparent peaks as well as group delay based on a double-peak EIT with good tuning performance. Finally, based on broadband EIT, the active tuning of quality factor of the EIT peak is also realized. This work introduces active EIT control with more degree of freedom by employing VO2, and can find potential applications in future wireless and ultrafast THz communication systems as multi-channel filters, switches, spacers, logic gates and modulators.
Negative index metamaterials (NIMs) give rise to unusual and intriguing properties and phenomena, which may lead to important applications such as superlens, subwavelength cavity and slow light devices. However, the negative refractive index in metam aterials normally requires a stringent condition of simultaneously negative permittivity and negative permeability. A new class of negative index metamaterials - chiral NIMs, have been recently proposed. In contrast to the conventional NIMs, chiral NIMs do not require the above condition, thus presenting a very robust route toward negative refraction. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of a chiral metamaterial exhibiting negative refractive index down to n=-5 at terahertz frequencies, with only a single chiral resonance. The strong chirality present in the structure lifts the degeneracy for the two circularly polarized waves and relieves the double negativity requirement. Chiral NIM are predicted to possess intriguing electromagnetic properties that go beyond the traditional NIMs, such as opposite signs of refractive indices for the two circular polarizations and negative reflection. The realization of terahertz chiral NIMs offers new opportunities for investigations of their novel electromagnetic properties, as well as important terahertz device applications.
Plasmon induced transparency (PIT) effect in a terahertz graphene metamaterial is numerically and theoretically analyzed. The proposed metamaterial comprises of a pair of graphene split ring resonators placed alternately on both sides of a graphene s trip of nanometer scale. The PIT effect in the graphene metamaterial is studied for different vertical and horizontal configurations. Our results reveal that there is no PIT effect in the graphene metamaterial when the centers of both the split ring resonators and the graphene strip are collinear to each other. This is a noteworthy feature, as the PIT effect does not vanish for similar configuration in a metal-based metamaterial structure. We have further shown that the PIT effect can be tuned by varying the Fermi energy of graphene layer. A theoretical model using the three level plasmonic system is established in order to validate the numerical results. Our studies could be significant in designing graphene based frequency agile ultra-thin devices for terahertz applications.
