Three steps in the development of the maximum likelihood (ML) method are presented. At first, the application of the ML method and Fisher information notion in the model selection analysis is described (Chapter 1). The fundamentals of differential geometry in the construction of the statistical space are introduced, illustrated also by examples of the estimation of the exponential models. At second, the notions of the relative entropy and the information channel capacity are introduced (Chapter 2). The observed and expected structural information principle (IP) and the variational IP of the modified extremal physical information (EPI) method of Frieden and Soffer are presented and discussed (Chapter 3). The derivation of the structural IP based on the analyticity of the logarithm of the likelihood function and on the metricity of the statistical space of the system is given. At third, the use of the EPI method is developed (Chapters 4-5). The information channel capacity is used for the field theory models classification. Next, the modified Frieden and Soffer EPI method, which is a nonparametric estimation that enables the statistical selection of the equation of motions of various field theory models (Chapter 4) or the distribution generating equations of statistical physics models (Chapter 5) is discussed. The connection between entanglement of the momentum degrees of freedom and the mass of a particle is analyzed. The connection between the Rao-Cramer inequality, the causality property of the processes in the Minkowski space-time and the nonexistence of tachions is shown. The generalization of the Aoki-Yoshikawa sectoral productivity econophysical model is also presented (Chapter 5). Finally, the Frieden EPI method of the analysis of the EPR-Bhom experiment is presented. It differs from the Frieden approach by the use of the information geometry methods.

The subjects of the paper are the likelihood method (LM) and the expected Fisher information (FI) considered from the point od view of the construction of the physical models which originate in the statistical description of phenomena. The master equ ation case and structural information principle are derived. Then, the phenomenological description of the information transfer is presented. The extreme physical information (EPI) method is reviewed. As if marginal, the statistical interpretation of the amplitude of the system is given. The formalism developed in this paper would be also applied in quantum information processing and quantum game theory.

Learning disentangled and interpretable representations is an important step towards accomplishing comprehensive data representations on the manifold. In this paper, we propose a novel representation learning algorithm which combines the inference ab ilities of Variational Autoencoders (VAE) with the generalization capability of Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN). The proposed model, called InfoVAEGAN, consists of three networks~: Encoder, Generator and Discriminator. InfoVAEGAN aims to jointly learn discrete and continuous interpretable representations in an unsupervised manner by using two different data-free log-likelihood functions onto the variables sampled from the generators distribution. We propose a two-stage algorithm for optimizing the inference network separately from the generator training. Moreover, we enforce the learning of interpretable representations through the maximization of the mutual information between the existing latent variables and those created through generative and inference processes.

This paper presents a statistical method to subtract background in maximum likelihood fit, without relying on any separate sideband or simulation for background modeling. The method, called sFit, is an extension to the sPlot technique originally deve loped to reconstruct true distribution for each date component. The sWeights defined for the sPlot technique allow to construct a modified likelihood function using only the signal probability density function and events in the signal region. Contribution of background events in the signal region to the likelihood function cancels out on a statistical basis. Maximizing this likelihood function leads to unbiased estimates of the fit parameters in the signal probability density function.
Tuffley and Steel (1997) proved that Maximum Likelihood and Maximum Parsimony methods in phylogenetics are equivalent for sequences of characters under a simple symmetric model of substitution with no common mechanism. This result has been widely cit ed ever since. We show that small changes to the model assumptions suffice to make the two methods inequivalent. In particular, we analyze the case of bounded substitution probabilities as well as the molecular clock assumption. We show that in these cases, even under no common mechanism, Maximum Parsimony and Maximum Likelihood might make conflicting choices. We also show that if there is an upper bound on the substitution probabilities which is `sufficiently small, every Maximum Likelihood tree is also a Maximum Parsimony tree (but not vice versa).

Sicily has played an important role in the development of the new research area named Econophysics. In fact some key ideas supporting this new hybrid discipline were originally formulated in a pioneering work of the Sicilian born physicist Ettore Maj orana. The article he wrote was entitled The value of statistical laws in physics and social sciences. I will discuss its origin and history that has been recently discovered in the study of Stefano Roncoroni. This recent study documents the true reasons and motivations that triggered the pioneering work of Majorana. It also shows that the description of this work provided by Edoardo Amaldi was shallow and misleading. In the second part of the talk I will recollect the first years of development of econophysics and in particular the role of the International Workshop on Econophysics and Statistical Finance held in Palermo on 28-30 September 1998 and the setting in 1999 of the Observatory of Complex Systems the research group on Econophysics of Palermo University and Istituto Nazionale di Fisica della Materia.
