Non-local properties of ensembles of quantum gates induced by the Haar measure on the unitary group are investigated. We analyze the entropy of entanglement of a unitary matrix U equal to the Shannon entropy of the vector of singular values of the reshuffled matrix. Averaging the entropy over the Haar measure on U(N^2) we find its asymptotic behaviour. For two--qubit quantum gates we derive the induced probability distribution of the interaction content and show that the relative volume of the set of perfect entanglers reads 8/3 pi approx 0.85. We establish explicit conditions under which a given one-qubit bistochastic map is unistochastic, so it can be obtained by partial trace over a one--qubit environment initially prepared in the maximally mixed state.

An unknown unitary gates, which is secretly chosen from several known ones, can always be distinguished perfectly. In this paper, we implement such a task on IBMs quantum processor. More precisely, we experimentally demonstrate the discrimination of two qubit unitary gates, the identity gate and the $frac{2}{3}pi$-phase shift gate, using two discrimination schemes -- the parallel scheme and the sequential scheme. We program these two schemes on the emph{ibmqx4}, a $5$-qubit superconducting quantum processor via IBM cloud, with the help of the $QSI$ modules [S. Liu et al.,~arXiv:1710.09500, 2017]. We report that both discrimination schemes achieve success probabilities at least 85%.
We show that a set of optical memories can act as a configurable linear optical network operating on frequency-multiplexed optical states. Our protocol is applicable to any quantum memories that employ off-resonant Raman transitions to store optical information in atomic spins. In addition to the configurability, the protocol also offers favourable scaling with an increasing number of modes where N memories can be configured to implement an arbitrary N-mode unitary operations during storage and readout. We demonstrate the versatility of this protocol by showing an example where cascaded memories are used to implement a conditional CZ gate.
We study a method of producing approximately diagonal 1-qubit gates. For each positive integer, the method provides a sequence of gates that are defined iteratively from a fixed diagonal gate and an arbitrary gate. These sequences are conjectured to converge to diagonal gates doubly exponentially fast and are verified for small integers. We systemically study this conjecture and prove several important partial results. Some techniques are developed to pave the way for a final resolution of the conjecture. The sequences provided here have applications in quantum search algorithms, quantum circuit compilation, generation of leakage-free entangled gates in topological quantum computing, etc.
We quantify the resources required for entangling two uncoupled spin qubits through an intermediate mesoscopic spin system (MSS) by indirect joint measurement. Indirect joint measurement benefits from coherent magnification of the target qubits state in the collective magnetization of the MSS; such that a low-resolution collective measurement on the MSS suffices to prepare post-selected entanglement on the target qubits. A MSS consisting of two non-interacting halves, each coupled to one of the target qubits is identified as a geometry that allows implementing the magnification process with experimentally available control tools. It is proved that the requirements on the amplified state of the target qubits and the MSS perfectly map to the specifications of micro-macro entanglement between each target qubit and its nearby half of the MSS. In the light of this equivalence, the effects of experimental imperfections are explored; in particular, bipartite entanglement between the target qubits is shown to be robust to imperfect preparation of the MSS. Our study provides a new approach for using an intermediate spin system for connecting separated qubits. It also opens a new path in exploring entanglement between microscopic and mesoscopic spin systems.
We study the entangling properties of multipartite unitary gates with respect to the measure of entanglement called one-tangle. Putting special emphasis on the case of three parties, we derive an analytical expression for the entangling power of an $ n$-partite gate as an explicit function of the gate, linking the entangling power of gates acting on $n$-partite Hilbert space of dimension $d_1 ldots d_n$ to the entanglement of pure states in the Hilbert space of dimension $(d_1 ldots d_n)^2$. Furthermore, we evaluate its mean value averaged over the unitary and orthogonal groups, analyze the maximal entangling power and relate it to the absolutely maximally entangled (AME) states of a system with $2n$ parties. Finally, we provide a detailed analysis of the entangling properties of three-qubit unitary and orthogonal gates.
