Accurate and efficient approaches to predict the optical properties of organic semiconducting compounds could accelerate the search for efficient organic photovoltaic materials. Nevertheless, predicting the optical properties of organic semiconductors has been plagued by the inaccuracy or computational cost of conventional first-principles calculations. In this work, we demonstrate that orbital-dependent density-functional theory based upon Koopmans condition [Phys. Rev. B 82, 115121 (2010)] is apt at describing donor and acceptor levels for a wide variety of organic molecules, clusters, and oligomers within a few tenths of an electron-volt relative to experiment, which is comparable to the predictive performance of many-body perturbation theory methods at a fraction of the computational cost.

To identify reliable molecular design principles for energy level tuning in donor/acceptor conjugated polymers (CPs), we studied the governing factors by means of ab initio calculations based on density-functional theory (DFT). We investigated a seri es of CPs in which we independently and systematically varied the electron withdrawing power of the acceptor unit and the electron donating power of the donor unit, while maintaining the same conjugated chain conformation. We observed that the introduction of a stronger acceptor unit, while keeping the same donor unit in the CP, lowers the LUMO level, but leaves the HOMO level almost unchanged. Conversely, enhancing the strength of the donor unit for the same acceptor unit raises the HOMO level, while maintaining the LUMO level. We identified strong correlations between the frontier orbital energy levels and the degree of orbital localization, which depends on the electron donating or withdrawing power of the molecular groups carrying the orbitals. Moreover, the HOMO/LUMO gap of the CP is directly proportional to the charge transfer between donating and accepting units, which provides a robust design criterion for CPs.
We investigate by first-principles simulations the resonant electron-transfer lifetime from the excited state of an organic adsorbate to a semiconductor surface, namely isonicotinic acid on rutile TiO$_2$(110). The molecule-substrate interaction is d escribed using density functional theory, while the effect of a truly semi-infinite substrate is taken into account by Greens function techniques. Excitonic effects due to the presence of core-excited atoms in the molecule are shown to be instrumental to understand the electron-transfer times measured using the so-called core-hole-clock technique. In particular, for the isonicotinic acid on TiO$_2$(110), we find that the charge injection from the LUMO is quenched since this state lies within the substrate band gap. We compute the resonant charge-transfer times from LUMO+1 and LUMO+2, and systematically investigate the dependence of the elastic lifetimes of these states on the alignment among adsorbate and substrate states.
We calculate the shift current response, which has been identified as the dominant mechanism for the bulk photovoltaic effect, for the polar compounds LiAsS$_text{2}$, LiAsSe$_text{2}$, and NaAsSe$_text{2}$. We find that the magnitudes of the photovo ltaic responses in the visible range for these compounds exceed the maximum response obtained for BiFeO$_text{3}$ by 10 - 20 times. We correlate the high shift current response with the existence of $p$ states at both the valence and conduction band edges, as well as the dispersion of these bands, while also showing that high polarization is not a requirement. With low experimental band gaps of less than 2 eV and high shift current response, these materials have potential for use as bulk photovoltaics.

Using the density functional theory (DFT) formulated within the framework of the plane-wave basis projector augmented wave (PAW) method, the temperature-dependent elastic properties of MgRE (RE=Y, Dy, Pr, Sc, Tb) intermetallics with B2-type structure are presented from first-principles. Our calculations are based on the fact that the elastic moduli as a function of temperature mainly results from thermal expansion. The comparison between the predicted results and the available experimental data for a benchmark material NiAl provides good agreements. At $T=0K$, our calculated values of lattice parameter and elastic moduli for MgRE intermetallics show excellent agreement with previous theoretical results and experimental data. While temperature increases, we find that the elastic constants decrease and approach linearity at higher temperature and zero slope around zero temperature.
We calculate the bulk photovoltaic response of the ferroelectrics BaTiO$_3$ and PbTiO$_3$ from first principles by applying shift current theory to the electronic structure from density functional theory. The first principles results for BaTiO$_3$ re produce eperimental photocurrent direction and magnitude as a function of light frequency, as well as the dependence of current on light polarization, demonstrating that shift current is the dominant mechanism of the bulk photovoltaic effect in BaTiO$_3$. Additionally, we analyze the relationship between response and material properties in detail. The photocurrent does not depend simply or strongly on the magnitude of material polarization, as has been previously assumed; instead, electronic states with delocalized, covalent bonding that is highly asymmetric along the current direction are required for strong shift current enhancements. The complexity of the response dependence on both external and material parameters suggests applications not only in solar energy conversion, but to photocatalysis and sensor and switch type devices as well.
