We identify 42 candidate groups lying between 1.8<z<3.0 from a sample of 3502 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the zCOSMOS-deep redshift survey within the same redshift interval. These systems contain three to five spectroscopic galaxies that lie within 500kpc in projected distance (in physical space) and within 700km/s in velocity. Based on extensive analysis of mock catalogues that have been generated from the Millennium simulation, we examine the likely nature of these systems at the time of observation, and what they will evolve into down to the present epoch. Although few of the member galaxies are likely to reside in the same halo at the epoch we observe them, 50% of the systems will eventually bring them all into the same halo, and almost all (93%) will have at least part of the member galaxies in the same halo by the present epoch. Most of the candidate groups can therefore be described as proto-groups. An estimate of the overdensities is also consistent with the idea that these systems are being seen at the start of the assembly process. We also examine present-day haloes and ask whether their progenitors would have been seen amongst our candidate groups. For present-day haloes between 10^14-10^15Msun/h, 35% should have appeared amongst our candidate groups, and this would have risen to 70% if our survey had been fully-sampled, so we can conclude that our sample can be taken as representative of a large fraction of such systems. There is a clear excess of massive galaxies above 10^10Msun around the locations of the candidate groups in a large independent COSMOS photo-z sample, but we see no evidence in this latter data for any colour differentiation with respect to the field. This is however consistent with the idea that such differentiation arises in satellite galaxies, as indicated at z<1, if the candidate groups are indeed only starting to be assembled.

We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of galaxies at 0.5<z<1 as a function of environment based on data from the zCOSMOS survey. There is a fair amount of evidence that galaxy properties depend on mass of groups and clusters, in the sense that quiescent galaxies prefer more massive systems. We base our analysis on a mass-selected environment using X-ray groups of galaxies and define the group membership using a large number of spectroscopic redshifts from zCOSMOS. We show that the fraction of red galaxies is higher in groups than in the field at all redshifts probed in our study. Interestingly, the fraction of [OII] emitters on the red sequence increases at higher redshifts in groups, while the fraction does not strongly evolve in the field. This is due to increased dusty star formation activities and/or increased activities of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in high redshift groups. We study these possibilities using the 30-band photometry and X-ray data. We find that the stellar population of the red [OII] emitters in groups is old and there is no clear hint of dusty star formation activities in those galaxies. The observed increase of red [OII] emitters in groups is likely due to increased AGN activities. However, our overall statistics is poor and any firm conclusions need to be drawn from a larger statistical sample of z~1 groups.

We present the spectroscopic confirmation of a $z=2.45$ proto-cluster. Its member galaxies lie within a radius of 1.4Mpc (physical) on the sky and within $Delta v pm 700$km/s along the line of sight. We estimate an overdensity of 10, suggesting that the structure has made the turn-around but is not assembled yet. Comparison to the Millennium simulation suggests that analogous structures evolve into $10^{14}-10^{15}$M$_{odot}$/h type dark matter haloes by $z=0$ qualifying the notion of proto-cluster. The search for the complete census of mock progenitor galaxies at $zsim2.5$ of these massive $z=0$ mock clusters reveals that they are widely spread over areas with a diameter of 3-20Mpc. This suggests that the optical selection of such proto-clusters can result in a rich diversity regarding their $z=0$ descendants. We also searched for signs of environmental differentiation in this proto-cluster. Whilst we see a weak trend for more massive and more quiescent galaxies in the proto-cluster, this is not statistically significant.

Abridged: A photometric sample of ~7100 V<25.3 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) has been selected by combining Subaru/Suprime-Cam BVRciz data with deep GALEX/NUV imaging of the Subaru Deep Field. Follow-up spectroscopy confirmed 24 LBGs at 1.5<z<2.7. Amon g the optical spectra, 12 have Ly-alpha emission with rest-frame equivalent widths of ~5-60AA. The success rate for identifying LBGs as NUV-dropouts at 1.5<z<2.7 is 86%. The rest-frame UV (1700AA) luminosity function (LF) is constructed from the photometric sample with corrections for stellar contamination and z<1.5 interlopers. The LF is 1.7+/-0.1 times higher than those of z~2 BXs and z~3 LBGs. Three explanations were considered, and it is argued that significantly underestimating low-z contamination or effective comoving volume is unlikely: the former would be inconsistent with the spectroscopic sample at 93% confidence, and the second explanation would not resolve the discrepancy. The third scenario is that different photometric selection of the samples yields non-identical galaxy populations, such that some BX galaxies are LBGs and vice versa. This argument is supported by a higher surface density of LBGs at all magnitudes while the redshift distribution of the two populations is nearly identical. This study, when combined with other star-formation rate (SFR) density UV measurements from LBG surveys, indicates that there is a rise in the SFR density: a factor of 3-6 (3-10) increase from z~5 (z~6) to z~2, followed by a decrease to z~0. This result, along with past sub-mm studies that find a peak at z~2 in their redshift distribution, suggest that z~2 is the epoch of peak star-formation. Additional spectroscopy is required to characterize the complete shape of the z~2 LBG UV LF via measurements of contamination and accurate distances.

[Abridged] With the first 10000 spectra of the flux limited zCOSMOS sample (I<=22.5) we study the evolution of environmental effects on galaxy properties since z=1.0, and disentangle the dependence among galaxy colour, stellar mass and local density (3D local density contrast `delta, computed with the 5th nearest neighbour approach). We confirm that within a luminosity-limited sample (M_B<=-20.5-z) the fraction of red (U-B>=1) galaxies f_red depends on delta at least up to z=1, with red galaxies residing mainly in high densities. This trend weakens for increasing z, and it is mirrored by the behaviour of the fraction of galaxies with D4000A break >=1.4. We also find that up to z=1 the fraction of galaxies with log(EW[OII]) >=1.15 is higher for lower delta, and also this dependence weakens for increasing z. Given the triple dependence among galaxy colours, stellar mass and delta, the colour-delta relation found in the luminosity-selected sample can be due to the broad range of stellar masses. Thus, we fix the stellar mass and we find that in this case the colour-delta relation is flat up to z=1 for galaxies with log(M/M_sun)>=10.7. This means that for these masses the colour-delta relation found in a luminosity-selected sample is the result of the combined colour-mass and mass-delta relations. In contrast, we find that for 0.1<=z<=0.5 and log(M/M_sun)<=10.7 f_red depends on delta even at fixed mass. In these mass and z ranges, environment affects directly also galaxy colours. We suggest a scenario in which the colour depends primarily on stellar mass, but for relatively low mass galaxies the local density modulates this dependence. These galaxies formed more recently, in an epoch when evolved structures were already in place, and their longer SFH allowed environment-driven physical processes to operate during longer periods of time.
A sample of 94 narrow line AGN with 0.65<z<1.20 has been selected from the 20k-Bright zCOSMOS galaxy sample by detection of the high-ionization [NeV]3426 line. Taking advantage of the large amount of data available in the COSMOS field, the properties of the [NeV]-selected Type-2 AGN have been investigated, focusing on their host galaxies, X-ray emission, and optical line flux ratios. Finally, the diagnostic developed by Gilli et al. (2010), based on the X-ray to [NeV] luminosity ratio, has been exploited to search for the more heavily obscured AGN. We found that [Ne v]-selected narrow line AGN have Seyfert 2-like optical spectra, although with emission line ratios diluted by a star-forming component. The ACS morphologies and stellar component in the optical spectra indicate a preference for our Type-2 AGN to be hosted in early-spirals with stellar masses greater than 10^(9.5-10)Msun, on average higher than those of the galaxy parent sample. The fraction of galaxies hosting [NeV]-selected obscured AGN increases with the stellar mass, reaching a maximum of about 3% at 2x10^11 Msun. A comparison with other selection techniques at z~1 shows that the detection of the [Ne v] line is an effective method to select AGN in the optical band, in particular the most heavily obscured ones, but can not provide by itself a complete census of AGN2. Finally, the high fraction of [NeV]-selected Type-2 AGN not detected in medium-deep Chandra observations (67%) is suggestive of the inclusion of Compton-thick sources in our sample. The presence of a population of heavily obscured AGN is corroborated by the X-ray to [NeV] ratio; we estimated, by mean of X-ray stacking technique and simulations, that the Compton-thick fraction in our sample of Type-2 AGN is 43+-4%, in good agreement with standard assumptions by the XRB synthesis models.
