The observation of quantum oscillations in underdoped cuprates has generated intense debate about the nature of the field-induced resistive state and its implications for the `normal state of high T_c superconductors. Quantum oscillations suggest an underlying Fermi liquid state at high magnetic fields H and low temperatures, in contrast with the high-temperature, zero-field pseudogap state seen in spectroscopy. Recent heat capacity measurements show quantum oscillations together with a large and singular field-dependent suppression of the electronic density of states (DOS), which suggests a resistive state that is affected by the d-wave superconducting gap. We present a theoretical analysis of the electronic excitations in a vortex-liquid state, with short range pairing correlations in space and time, that is able to reconcile these seemingly contradictory observations. We show that phase fluctuations lead to large suppression of the DOS that goes like $sqrt{H}$ at low fields, in addition to quantum oscillations with a period determined by a Fermi surface reconstructed by a competing order parameter.

The quasi two-dimensional Mott insulator $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ is proximate to the sought-after Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL). In a layer of $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ on graphene the dominant Kitaev exchange is further enhanced by strain. Recently, quantum osci llation (QO) measurements of such $alpha$-RuCl$_3$ / graphene heterostructures showed an anomalous temperature dependence beyond the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich (LK) description. Here, we develop a theory of anomalous QO in an effective Kitaev-Kondo lattice model in which the itinerant electrons of the graphene layer interact with the correlated magnetic layer via spin interactions. At low temperatures a heavy Fermi liquid emerges such that the neutral Majorana fermion excitations of the Kitaev QSL acquire charge by hybridising with the graphene Dirac band. Using ab-initio calculations to determine the parameters of our low energy model we provide a microscopic theory of anomalous QOs with a non-LK temperature dependence consistent with our measurements. We show how remnants of fractionalized spin excitations can give rise to characteristic signatures in QO experiments.
We study an Anderson impurity embedded in a d-wave superconductor carrying a supercurrent. The low-energy impurity behavior is investigated by using the numerical renormalization group method developed for arbitrary electronic bath spectra. The resul ts explicitly show that the local impurity state is completely screened upon the non-zero current intensity. The impurity quantum criticality is in accordance with the well-known Kosterlitz-Thouless transition.
Developing a theoretical framework for conducting electronic fluids qualitatively distinct from those described by Landaus Fermi-liquid theory is of central importance to many outstanding problems in condensed matter physics. One such problem is that , above the transition temperature and near optimal doping, high-transition-temperature copper-oxide superconductors exhibit `strange metal behaviour that is inconsistent with being a traditional Landau Fermi liquid. Indeed, a microscopic theory of a strange-metal quantum phase could shed new light on the interesting low-temperature behaviour in the pseudogap regime and on the d-wave superconductor itself. Here we present a theory for a specific example of a strange metal---the d-wave metal. Using variational wavefunctions, gauge theoretic arguments, and ultimately large-scale density matrix renormalization group calculations, we show that this remarkable quantum phase is the ground state of a reasonable microscopic Hamiltonian---the usual t-J model with electron kinetic energy $t$ and two-spin exchange $J$ supplemented with a frustrated electron `ring-exchange term, which we here examine extensively on the square lattice two-leg ladder. These findings constitute an explicit theoretical example of a genuine non-Fermi-liquid metal existing as the ground state of a realistic model.

We show that the low-energy density of quasiparticle states in the mixed state of ultra-clean d-wave superconductors is characterized by pronounced quantum oscillations in the regime where the cyclotron frequency $hbaromega_c ll Delta_0$, the d-wave pairing gap. Such oscillations as a function of magnetic field B are argued to be due to the internodal scattering of the d-wave quasiparticles near wavevectors $(pm k_D,pm k_D)$ by the vortex lattice as well as their Zeeman coupling. The periodicity of the oscillations is set by the condition $k_D sqrt{hc/(eB)} equiv k_D sqrt{hc/(eB)}pmod {2pi}$. We find that there is additional structure within each period which grows in complexity as the Dirac node anisotropy increases.
We construct a two-dimensional lattice model of fermions coupled to Ising ferromagnetic critical fluctuations. Using extensive sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the model realizes a continuous itinerant quantum phase tra nsition. In comparison with other similar itinerant quantum critical points (QCPs), our QCP shows much weaker superconductivity tendency with no superconducting state down to the lowest temperature investigated, hence making the system a good platform for the exploration of quantum critical fluctuations. Remarkably, clear signatures of non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the fermion propagators are observed at the QCP. The critical fluctuations at the QCP partially resemble Hertz-Millis-Moriya behavior. However, careful scaling analysis reveals that the QCP belongs to a different universality class, deviating from both (2+1)d Ising and Hertz-Millis-Moriya predictions.
