The Pohlmeyer reduced equations for strings moving only in the AdS subspace of AdS_5 x S^5 have been used recently in the study of classical Euclidean minimal surfaces for Wilson loops and some semiclassical three-point correlation functions. We find an action that leads to these reduced superstring equations. For example, for a bosonic string in AdS_n such an action contains a Liouville scalar part plus a K/K gauged WZW model for the group K=SO(n-2) coupled to another term depending on two additional fields transforming as vectors under K. Solving for the latter fields gives a non-abelian Toda model coupled to the Liouville theory. For n=5 we generalize this bosonic action to include the S^5 contribution and fermionic terms. The corresponding reduced model for the AdS_2 x S^2 truncation of the full AdS_5 x S^5 superstring turns out to be equivalent to N=2 super Liouville theory. Our construction is based on taking a limit of the previously found reduced theory actions for bosonic strings in AdS_n x S^1 and superstrings in AdS_5 x S^5. This new action may be useful as a starting point for possible quantum generalizations or deformations of the classical Pohlmeyer-reduced theory. We give examples of simple extrema of this reduced superstring action which represent strings moving in the AdS_5 part of the space. Expanding near these backgrounds we compute the corresponding fluctuation spectra and show that they match the spectra found in the original superstring theory.

We consider the type IIB Green-Schwarz superstring theory on AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6) supported by homogeneous Ramond-Ramond 5-form flux and its type IIA T-duals. One motivation is to understand the solution of this theory based on integrability. This backgr ound is a limit of a 1/4 supersymmetric supergravity solution describing four intersecting D3-branes and represents a consistent embedding of AdS(2)xS(2) into critical superstring theory. Its AdS(2)xS(2) part with corresponding fermions can be described by a classically integrable PSU(1,1|2)/SO(1,1)xU(1) supercoset sigma-model. We point out that since the RR 5-form field has non-zero components along the 6-torus directions one cannot, in general, factorize the 10d superstring theory into the supercoset part plus 6 bosons and 6 additional massless fermions. Still, we demonstrate that the full superstring model (i) is classically integrable, at least to quadratic order in fermions, and (ii) admits a consistent classical truncation to the supercoset part. Following the analogy with other integrable backgrounds and starting with the finite-gap equations of the PSU(1,1|2)/SO(1,1)xU(1) supercoset we propose a set of asymptotic Bethe ansatz equations for a subset of the quantum string states.
We revisit the calculation of the thermal free energy for string theory in three-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime with Neveu-Schwarz-Neveu-Schwarz flux. The path integral calculation is exploited to confirm the off-shell Hilbert space and we find that the Casimir of the discrete representations of the isometry group takes values in a half-open interval. We extend the free energy calculation to the case of superstrings, calculate the boundary toroidal twisted partition function in the Ramond-Ramond sector, and prove lower bounds on the boundary conformal dimension from the bulk perspective. We classify Ramond-Ramond ground states and construct their second quantized partition function. The partition function exhibits intriguing modular properties.
We study a field theoretical model for p-q-superstrings in a fixed Anti-de-Sitter background. We find that the presence of the negative cosmological constant tends to decrease the core radius of the strings. Moreover, the binding energy decreases wit h the increase of the absolute value of the cosmological constant. Studying the effect of the p-q-strings on Anti-de-Sitter space, we observe that the presence of the negative cosmological constant tends to decrease the deficit angle as compared to asymptotically flat space-time.

We explore the eikonal approximation to graviton exchange in AdS_5 space, as relevant to scattering in gauge theories. We restrict ourselves to the regime where conformal invariance of the dual gauge theory holds, and to large t Hooft coupling where the computation involves pure gravity. We give a heuristic argument, a direct loop computation, and a shock wave derivation. The scalar propagator in AdS_3 plays a key role, indicating that even at strong coupling, two-dimensional conformal invariance controls high-energy four-dimensional gauge-theory scattering.
We use Dirac-Born-Infeld action to study the spinning D-string in $AdS_3 $ background in the presence of both NS-NS and RR fluxes. We compute the scaling relation between the energy (E) and spin (S) in the `long string limit. The energy of these spik y string is found to be a function of spin with the leading logarithmic behaviour and the scaling relation appears to be independent of the amount of flux present. We further discuss folded D-string solutions in $AdS_3$ background with pure NS-NS and R-R fluxes.
