We investigate the critical behaviour of charged and rotating AdS black holes in d spacetime dimensions, including effects from non-linear electrodynamics via the Born-Infeld action, in an extended phase space in which the cosmological constant is interpreted as thermodynamic pressure. For Reissner-Nordstrom black holes we find that the analogy with the Van der Walls liquid-gas system holds in any dimension greater than three, and that the critical exponents coincide with those of the Van der Waals system. We find that neutral slowly rotating black holes in four space-time dimensions also have the same qualitative behaviour. However charged and rotating black holes in three spacetime dimensions do not exhibit critical phenomena. For Born-Infeld black holes we define a new thermodynamic quantity B conjugate to the Born-Infeld parameter b that we call Born-Infeld vacuum polarization. We demonstrate that this quantity is required for consistency of both the first law of thermodynamics and the corresponding Smarr relation.

In this paper, we extend the study of the relationship between the photon sphere and the thermodynamic phase transition, especially the reentrant phase transition, to this black hole background. According to the number of the thermodynamic critical p oints, the black hole systems are divided into four cases with different values of Born-Infeld parameter b, where the black hole systems can have no phase transition, reentrant phase transition, or Van der Waals-like phase transition. For these different cases, we obtain the corresponding phase structures in pressure-temperature diagram and temperature-specific volume diagram. The tiny differences between these cases are clearly displayed. On the other hand, the radius rps and the minimal impact parameter ups of the photon sphere are calculated via the effective potential of the radial motion of photons. For different cases, rps and ups are found to have different behaviors. In particular, with the increase of rps or ups, the temperature possesses a decrease-increase-decrease-increase behavior for fixed pressure if there exists the reentrant phase transition. While for fixed temperature, the pressure will show an increase-decrease-increase-decrease behavior instead. These behaviors are quite different from that of the Van der Waals-like phase transition. Near the critical point, the changes of rps and ups among the black hole phase transition confirm an universal critical exponent 12. Therefore, all the results indicate that, for the charged Born-Infeld-AdS black holes, not only the Van der Waals-like phase transition, but also the reentrant phase transition can be reflected through the photon sphere.
The holographic quantum entanglement entropy for an infinite strip region of the boundary for the field theory dual to charged black holes in ${cal A}dS_{3+1}$ is investigated. In this framework we elucidate the low and high temperature behavior of t he entanglement entropy pertaining to various limits of the black hole charge. In the low temperature regime we establish a first law of entanglement thermodynamics for the boundary field theory.
We obtain (2+1) dimensional p-wave holographic superconductors from charged Born-Infeld black holes in the presence of massive charged vector fields in a bulk $AdS_4$ Einstein-Born-Infeld theory through the $AdS_4$-$CFT_3$ correspondence. Below a cer tain critical transition temperature the charged black hole develops vector hair that corresponds to charged vector condensate in the strongly coupled (2+1) dimensional boundary field theory that breaks both the $U(1)$ symmetry as well as the rotational invariance. The holographic free energy is computed for the boundary field theory which shows that the vector order parameter exhibits a rich phase structure involving zeroth order, first order, second order and retrograde phase transitions for different values of the backreaction and the Born-Infeld parameters. We numerically compute the ac conductivity for the p-wave superconducting phase of the strongly coupled (2+1) dimensional boundary field theory which also depends on the relative values of the parameters in the theory.

We explore the connection between the distribution of particles spontaneously produced from an electric field or black hole and the vacuum persistence, twice the imaginary part of the one-loop effective action. Employing the reconstruction conjecture , we find the effective action for the Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac distribution. The Schwinger effect in ${rm AdS}_2$ is computed via the phase-integral method in the static coordinates. The Hawking radiation and Schwinger effect of a charged black hole is rederived and interpreted via the phase-integral. Finally, we discuss the relation between the vacuum persistence and the trace or gravitational anomalies.
In this paper, we extend the phase space of black holes enclosed by a spherical cavity of radius $r_{B}$ to include $Vequiv4pi r_{B}^{3}/3$ as a thermodynamic volume. The thermodynamic behavior of Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) black holes is then investigated in the extended phase space. In a canonical ensemble at constant pressure, we find that the aforementioned thermodynamic behavior is remarkably similar to that of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) counterparts with the cosmological constant being interpreted as a pressure. Specifically, a first-order Hawking-Page-like phase transition occurs for a Schwarzschild black hole in a cavity. The phase structure of a RN black hole in a cavity shows a strong resemblance to that of the van der Waals fluid. Our results may provide a new perspective for the extended thermodynamics of AdS black holes by analogy with black holes in a cavity.
