An all-resonant method is proposed to control the quantum state of superconducting resonators. We present a method to synthesize an arbitrary quantum state of two superconducting resonators. This state-synthesis algorithm utilizes a coherent interaction of each resonator with a tunable artificial atom to create entangled quantum superpositions of photon number (Fock) states in the resonators. We theoretically analyze this approach, showing that it can efficiently synthesize NOON states, with large photon numbers, using existing technology.
We present a theoretical analysis of different methods to synthesize entangled states of two superconducting resonators. These methods use experimentally demonstrated interactions of resonators with artificial atoms, and offer efficient routes to gen erate nonclassical states. We analyze the theoretical structure of these algorithms and their average performance for arbitrary states and for deterministically preparing NOON states. Using a new state synthesis algorithm, we show that NOON states can be prepared in a time linear in the desired photon number and without any state-selective interactions.
We present an experimental demonstration as well as a theoretical model of an integrated circuit designed for the manipulation of a microwave field down to the single-photon level. The device is made of a superconducting resonator coupled to a transm ission line via a second frequency-tunable resonator. The tunable resonator can be used as a tunable coupler between the fixed resonator and the transmission line. Moreover, the manipulation of the microwave field between the two resonators is possible. In particular, we demonstrate the swapping of the field from one resonator to the other by pulsing the frequency detuning between the two resonators. The behavior of the system, which determines how the device can be operated, is analyzed as a function of one key parameter of the system, the damping ratio of the coupled resonators. We show a good agreement between experiments and simulations, realized by solving a set of coupled differential equations.
We propose a novel architecture for superconducting circuits to improve the efficiency of a quantum annealing system. To increase the capability of a circuit, it is desirable for a qubit to be coupled not only with adjacent qubits but also with other qubits located far away. We introduce a circuit that uses a lumped element resonator coupled each with one qubit. The resonator-qubit pairs are coupled by rf-superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based couplers. These pairs make a large quantum system for quantum annealer. This system could prepare the problem Hamiltonian and tune the parameters for quantum annealing procedure.
The investigation of two-level-state (TLS) loss in dielectric materials and interfaces remains at the forefront of materials research in superconducting quantum circuits. We demonstrate a method of TLS loss extraction of a thin film dielectric by mea suring a lumped element resonator fabricated from a superconductor-dielectric-superconductor trilayer. We extract the dielectric loss by formulating a circuit model for a lumped element resonator with TLS loss and then fitting to this model using measurements from a set of three resonator designs: a coplanar waveguide resonator, a lumped element resonator with an interdigitated capacitor, and a lumped element resonator with a parallel plate capacitor that includes the dielectric thin film of interest. Unlike other methods, this allows accurate measurement of materials with TLS loss lower than $10^{-6}$. We demonstrate this method by extracting a TLS loss of $1.02 times 10^{-3}$ for sputtered $mathrm{Al_2O_3}$ using a set of samples fabricated from an $mathrm{Al/Al_2O_3/Al}$ trilayer. We observe a difference of 11$%$ between extracted loss of the trilayer with and without the implementation of this method.
