The equiatomic PrGe single crystal was grown by Czochralski pulling method. The grown single crystal was found to have CrB-type orthorhombic crystal structure with the space group textit{Cmcm} (#63). Transport and magnetization data reveal large anisotropy in the electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and magnetization. PrGe was found to exhibit two consecutive magnetic orderings at 44 K and 41.5 K, respectively. The magnetic susceptibility measurement along the three principal directions, in low applied fields, revealed a cusp like behaviour at 44 K while at 41.5 K a ferromagnetic like increase was observed. The hysteritic behaviour in the magnetization measurement at 1.8 K confirmed the ferromagnetic nature of PrGe at low temperatures. The heat capacity data clearly revealed the bulk nature of two magnetic transitions by the presence of two sharp peaks attaining values exceeding 40 J/K$cdot$mol at the respective temperatures. The absence of Schottky contribution in the magnetic part of heat capacity indicates a quasi-ninefold degenerate J=4 magnetic ground state in this system. The low temperature data of electrical resistivity and the magnetic part of heat capacity show an existence of gap in the spin-wave spectrum.

We have observed the orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic Mott-insulator Lu2V2O7 by the polarized neutron diffraction technique. The orbital ordering pattern determined from the observed magnetic form factors can be explained in terms of a linear co mbination of wave functions |yz>, |zx> and |xy>; |0> = (1/3)^(1/2) |xy> + (1/3)^(1/2)|yz> + (1/3)^(1/2) |zx> which is proportional to |(x + y + z)^2 - r^2>; where each orbital is extended toward the center-of-mass of the V tetrahedron. We discuss the stability of the ferromagnetic Lu2V2O7, using a Hubbard Hamiltonian with these three orbitals.
Under zero magnetic field, a quadrupolar order parameter at q_Q=(1/2,1/2,1/2) in a typical antiferro-quadrupole (AFQ) ordering compound CeB6 has been observed for the first time by means of a resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) te chnique. The RXS is obs erved at the 2p->5d dipole transition energy of the Ce L3-edge. Using this RXS technique to observe the pure order parameter of the AFQ state, the magnetic phase diagram of Phase II is first determined.
The interplay of charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom in matter leads to various forms of ordered states through phase transitions. An important subclass of these phenomena of complex materials is charge ordering (CO), mainly driven by mixed- valence states. We discovered by combining the results of electrical resistivity ($rho$), specific heat, susceptibility $chi$ (textit{T}), and single crystal x-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) that Na$_{2.7}$Ru$_4$O$_9$ with the monoclinic tunnel type lattice (space group $C$2/$m$) exhibits an unconventional CO at room temperature while retaining metallicity. The temperature-dependent SC-XRD results show successive phase transitions with super-lattice reflections at textbf{q}$_1$=(0, $frac{1}{2}$, 0) and textbf{q}$_2$=(0, $frac{1}{3}$, $frac{1}{3}$) below $T_{textrm{C2}}$ (365 K) and only at textbf{q}$_1$=(0, $frac{1}{2}$, 0) between $T_{textrm{C2}}$ and $T_{textrm{C1}}$ (630 K). We interpreted these as an evidence for the formation of an unconventional CO. It reveals a strong first-order phase transition in the electrical resistivity at $T_{textrm{C2}}$ (cooling) = 345 K and $T_{textrm{C2}}$ (heating) = 365 K. We argue that the origin of the phase transition is due to the localized 4$d$ Ru-electrons. The results of our finding reveal an unique example of Ru$^{3+}$/Ru$^{4+}$ mixed valance heavy textit{d}$^4$ ions.
Field-induced magnetic ordering in the Haldane chain compound SrNi$_{2}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$ and effect of anisotropy have been investigated using single crystals. Static susceptibility, inelastic neutron scattering, high-field magnetization, and low tempe rature heat-capacity studies confirm a non-magnetic spin-singlet ground state and a gap between the singlet ground state and triplet excited states. The intra-chain exchange interaction is estimated to be $J sim 8.9{pm}$0.1 meV. Splitting of the dispersions into two modes with minimum energies 1.57 and 2.58 meV confirms the existence of single-ion anisotropy $D(S^z){^2}$. The value of {it D} is estimated to be $-0.51{pm}0.01$ meV and the easy axis is found to be along the crystallographic {it c}-axis. Field-induced magnetic ordering has been found with two critical fields [$mu_0H_c^{perp c} = 12.0{pm}$0.2 T and $mu_0H_c^{parallel c} = 20.8{pm}$0.5 T at 4.2 K]. Field-induced three-dimensional magnetic ordering above the critical fields is evident from the heat-capacity, susceptibility, and high-field magnetization study. The Phase diagram in the {it H-T} plane has been obtained from the high-field magnetization. The observed results are discussed in the light of theoretical predictions as well as earlier experimental reports on Haldane chain compounds.
We present a complete characterization of ferromagnetic system CeIr2B2 using powder x-ray diffraction XRD, magnetic susceptibility chi(T), isothermal magnetization M(H), specific heat C(T), electrical resistivity rho(T,H), and thermoelectric power S( T) measurements. Furthermore 11B NMR study was performed to probe the magnetism on a microscopic scale. The chi(T), C(T) and rho(T) data confirm bulk ferromagnetic ordering with Tc = 5.1 K. Ce ions in CeIr2B2 are in stable trivalent state. Our low-temperature C(T) data measured down to 0.4 K yield Sommerfeld coefficient gamma = 73(4) mJ/molK2 which is much smaller than the previously reported value of gamma = 180 mJ/molK2 deduced from the specific heat measurement down to 2.5 K. For LaIr2B2 gamma = 6(1) mJ/molK2 which implies the density of states at the Fermi level D(EF) = 2.54 states/(eV f.u.) for both spin directions. The renormalization factor for quasi-particle density of states and hence for quasi-particle mass due to 4f correlations in CeIr2B2 is 12. The Kondo temperature TK ~ 4 K is estimated from the jump in specific heat of CeIr2B2 at Tc. Both C(T) and rho(T) data exhibit gapped-magnon behavior in magnetically ordered state with an energy gap Eg ~ 3.5 K. The rho data as a function of magnetic field H indicate a large negative magnetoresistance (MR) which is highest for T = 5 K.While at 5 K the negative MR keeps on increasing up to 10 T, at 2 K an upturn is observed near H = 3.5 T. On the other hand, the thermoelectric power data have small absolute values (S ~ 7 {mu}V/K) indicating a weak Kondo interaction. A shoulder in S(T) at about 30 K followed by a minimum at ~ 10 K is attributed to crystal electric field (CEF) effects and the onset of magnetic ordering. 11B NMR line broadening provides strong evidence of ferromagnetic correlations below 40 K.
