A numerical solution to the problem of wave scattering by many small particles is studied under the assumption k<<1, d>>a, where a is the size of the particles and d is the distance between the neighboring particles. Impedance boundary conditions are assumed on the boundaries of small particles. The results of numerical simulation show good agreement with the theory. They open a way to numerical simulation of the method for creating materials with a desired refraction coefficient.

Electronic-structure theory is a strong pillar of materials science. Many different computer codes that employ different approaches are used by the community to solve various scientific problems. Still, the precision of different packages has only re cently been scrutinized thoroughly, focusing on a specific task, namely selecting a popular density functional, and using unusually high, extremely precise numerical settings for investigating 71 monoatomic crystals. Little is known, however, about method- and code-specific uncertainties that arise under numerical settings that are commonly used in practice. We shed light on this issue by investigating the deviations in total and relative energies as a function of computational parameters. Using typical settings for basis sets and k-grids, we compare results for 71 elemental and 63 binary solids obtained by three different electronic-structure codes that employ fundamentally different strategies. On the basis of the observed trends, we propose a simple, analytical model for the estimation of the errors associated with the basis-set incompleteness. We cross-validate this model using ternary systems obtained from the NOMAD Repository and discuss how our approach enables the comparison of the heterogeneous data present in computational materials databases.
The size of micromagnetic structures, such as domain walls or vortices, is comparable to the exchange length of the ferromagnet. Both, the exchange length of the stray field $l_s$ and the magnetocrystalline exchange length $l_k$ are material-dependen t quantities that usually lie in the nanometer range. This emphasizes the theoretical challenges associated with the mesoscopic nature of micromagnetism: the magnetic structures are much larger than the atomic lattice constant, but at the same time much smaller than the sample size. In computer simulations, the smallest exchange length serves as an estimate for the largest cell size admissible to prevent appreciable discretization errors. This general rule is not valid in special situations where the magnetization becomes particularly inhomogeneous. When such strongly inhomogeneous structures develop, micromagnetic simulations inevitably contain systematic and numerical errors. It is suggested to combine micromagnetic theory with a Heisenberg model to resolve such problems. We analyze cases where strongly inhomogeneous structures pose limits to standard micromagnetic simulations, arising from fundamental aspects as well as from numerical drawbacks.
Accurate phase diagram calculation from molecular dynamics requires systematic treatment and convergence of statistical averages. In this work we propose a Gaussian process regression based framework for reconstructing the free energy functions using data of various origin. Our framework allows for propagating statistical uncertainty from finite molecular dynamics trajectories to the phase diagram and automatically performing convergence with respect to simulation parameters. Furthermore, our approach provides a way for automatic optimal sampling in the simulation parameter space based on Bayesian optimization approach. We validate our methodology by constructing phase diagrams of two model systems, the Lennard-Jones and soft-core potential, and compare the results with existing works studies and our coexistence simulations. Finally, we construct the phase diagram of lithium at temperatures above 300 K and pressures below 30 GPa from a machine-learning potential trained on ab initio data. Our approach performs well when compared to coexistence simulations and experimental results.
The design of next-generation alloys through the Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) approach relies on multi-scale computer simulations to provide thermodynamic properties when experiments are difficult to conduct. Atomistic method s such as Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) have been successful in predicting properties of never before studied compounds or phases. However, uncertainty quantification (UQ) of DFT and MD results is rarely reported due to computational and UQ methodology challenges. Over the past decade, studies have emerged that mitigate this gap. These advances are reviewed in the context of thermodynamic modeling and information exchange with mesoscale methods such as Phase Field Method (PFM) and Calculation of Phase Diagrams (CALPHAD). The importance of UQ is illustrated using properties of metals, with aluminum as an example, and highlighting deterministic, frequentist and Bayesian methodologies. Challenges facing routine uncertainty quantification and an outlook on addressing them are also presented.
