Early-type galaxies obey a narrow relation traced by their stellar content between the mass and size (Mass- Radius relation). The wealth of recently acquired observational data essentially confirms the classical relations found by Burstein, Bender, Faber, and Nolthenius, i.e. log(R_1/2) propto log(Ms)simeq 0.54 for high mass galaxies and log(R_1/2) propto log(Ms) simeq 0.3 for dwarf systems (shallower slope), where R_1/2 and Ms are the half-light radius and total mass in stars, respectively. Why do galaxies follow these characteristic trends? What can they tell us about the process of galaxy formation? We investigate the mechanisms which concur to shape the Mass-Radius relation, in order to cast light on the physical origin of its slope, its tightness, and its zero point. We perform a theoretical analysis, and couple it with the results of numerical hydrodynamical (NB-TSPH) simulations of galaxy formation, and with a simulation of the Mass-Radius plane itself. We propose a novel interpretation of the Mass-Radius relation, which we claim to be the result of two complementary mechanisms: on one hand, the result of local physical processes, which fixes the ratio between masses and radii of individual objects; on the other hand, the action of cosmological global, statistical principles, which shape the distribution of objects in the plane. We reproduce the Mass-Radius relation with a simple numerical technique based on this view.

In this letter we present a study of the color magnitude relation of 468 early-type galaxies in the Virgo Cluster with Sloan Digital Sky Survey imaging data. The analysis of our homogeneous, model-independent data set reveals that, in all colors (u-g , g-r, g-i, i-z) similarly, giant and dwarf early-type galaxies follow a continuous color magnitude relation (CMR) that is best described by an S-shape. The magnitude range and quality of our data allows us to clearly confirm that the CMR in Virgo is not linear. Additionally, we analyze the scatter about the CMR and find that it increases in the intermediate-luminosity regime. Nevertheless, despite this observational distinction, we conclude from the similarly shaped CMR of semi-analytic model predictions that dwarfs and giants could be of the same origin.

We determine an absolute calibration of the initial mass function (IMF) of early-type galaxies, by studying a sample of 56 gravitational lenses identified by the SLACS Survey. Under the assumption of standard Navarro, Frenk & White dark matter halos, a combination of lensing, dynamical, and stellar population synthesis models is used to disentangle the stellar and dark matter contribution for each lens. We define an IMF mismatch parameter alpha=M*(L+D)/M*(SPS) as the ratio of stellar mass inferred by a joint lensing and dynamical models (M*(L+D)) to the current stellar mass inferred from stellar populations synthesis models (M*(SPS)). We find that a Salpeter IMF provides stellar masses in agreement with those inferred by lensing and dynamical models (<log alpha>=0.00+-0.03+-0.02), while a Chabrier IMF underestimates them (<log alpha>=0.25+-0.03+-0.02). A tentative trend is found, in the sense that alpha appears to increase with galaxy velocity dispersion. Taken at face value, this result would imply a non universal IMF, perhaps dependent on metallicity, age, or abundance ratios of the stellar populations. Alternatively, the observed trend may imply non-universal dark matter halos with inner density slope increasing with velocity dispersion. While the degeneracy between the two interpretations cannot be broken without additional information, the data imply that massive early-type galaxies cannot have both a universal IMF and universal dark matter halos.
We present the discovery of rotation in quenched, low-mass early-type galaxies that are isolated. This finding challenges the claim that (all) rotating dwarf early-type galaxies in clusters were once spiral galaxies that have since been harassed and transformed into early-type galaxies. Our search of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data within the Local volume ($z<0.02$) has yielded a sample of 46 galaxies with a stellar mass $M_star lesssim 5times10^9$ M$_odot$ (median $M_star sim 9.29 times 10^8$ M$_odot$), a low H$alpha$ equivalent width EW$_{{rm H}alpha}< 2$ AA, and no massive neighbour ($M_{star}gtrsim3 times 10^{10}$ M$_{odot}$) within a velocity interval of $Delta V = 500$ km s$^{-1}$ and a projected distance of $sim$1 Mpc. Nine of these galaxies were subsequently observed with Keck ESI and their radial kinematics are presented here. These extend out to the half-light radius $R_e$ in the best cases, and beyond $R_e/2$ for all. They reveal a variety of behaviours similar to those of a comparison sample of early-type dwarf galaxies in the Virgo cluster observed by Toloba et al. Both samples have similar frequencies of slow and fast rotators, as well as kinematically decoupled cores. This, and especially the finding of rotating quenched low-mass galaxies in isolation, reveals that the early-type dwarfs in galaxy clusters need not be harassed or tidally stirred spiral galaxies.
We present surface photometry of a sample of 52 galaxies from the GALEX and 2MASS data archives, these include 32 normal elliptical galaxies, 10 ellipticals with weak Liner or other nuclear activity, and 10 star forming ellipticals or early-type spir als. We examine the spatial distribution of the Far Ultra-Violet excess in these galaxies, and its correlation with dynamical and stellar population properties of the galaxies. From aperture photometry we find that all galaxies except for recent major remnants and galaxies with ongoing star formation show a positive gradient in the (FUV-NUV) colour determined from the GALEX images. The logarithmic gradient does not correlate with any stellar population parameter, but it does correlate with the central velocity dispersion. The strength of the excess on the other hand, correlates with both [alpha/Fe] and [Z/H], but more strongly with the former. We derive models of the underlying stellar population from the 2MASS H-band images, and the residual of the image from this model reveals a map of the centrally concentrated FUV excess. We examine a possible hypothesis for generating the FUV excess and the radial gradient in its strength, involving a helium abundance gradient set up early in the formation process of the galaxies. If this hypothesis is correct, the persistence of the gradients to the present day places a strong limit on the importance of dry mergers in the formation of ellipticals.
Context. This is the third study of a series dedicated to the observed parallelism of properties between Galaxy Clusters and Groups(GCGs) and early-type galaxies (ETGs). Aims. Here we investigate the physical origin of the Mass-Radius Relation (MRR). Methods. Having collected literature data on masses and radii for objects going from Globular Clusters (GCs) to ETGs and GCGs, we set up the MR-plane and compare the observed distribution with the MRR predicted by theoretical models both for the monolithic and hierarchical scenarios. Results. We argue that the distributions of stellar systems in the MR-plane is due to complementary mechanisms: (i) on one hand, as shown in paper II, the relation of the virial equilibrium does intersect with a relation that provides the total luminosity as a function of the star formation history; (ii) on the other hand, the locus predicted for the collapse of systems should be convolved with the statistical expectation for the maximum mass of the halos at each comsic epoch. This second aspect provides a natural boundary limit explaining either the curved distribution observed in the MR-plane and the existence of a zone of avoidance. Conclusions. The distribution of stellar systems in the MR-plane is the result of two combined evolution, that of the stellar component and that of the halo component.
