Engineering networks fall into the category of large-scale networks with heterogeneous nodes such as sources and sinks. The survivability analysis of such networks requires the analysis of the connectivity of the network components for every possible combination of faults to determine a network response to each combination of faults. From the computational complexity point of view, the problem belongs to the class of exponential time problems at least. Partially, the problem complexity can be reduced by mapping the initial topology of a complex large-scale network with multiple sources and multiple sinks onto a set of smaller sub-topologies with multiple sources and a single sink connected to the network of sources by a single link. In this paper, the mapping procedure is applied to the Florida power grid.

Designing networks with specified collective properties is useful in a variety of application areas, enabling the study of how given properties affect the behavior of network models, the downscaling of empirical networks to workable sizes, and the an alysis of network evolution. Despite the importance of the task, there currently exists a gap in our ability to systematically generate networks that adhere to theoretical guarantees for the given property specifications. In this paper, we propose the use of Mixed-Integer Linear Optimization modeling and solution methodologies to address this Network Generation Problem. We present a number of useful modeling techniques and apply them to mathematically express and constrain network properties in the context of an optimization formulation. We then develop complete formulations for the generation of networks that attain specified levels of connectivity, spread, assortativity and robustness, and we illustrate these via a number of computational case studies.
We present a novel algorithm and validation method for disambiguating author names in very large bibliographic data sets and apply it to the full Web of Science (WoS) citation index. Our algorithm relies only upon the author and citation graphs avail able for the whole period covered by the WoS. A pair-wise publication similarity metric, which is based on common co-authors, self-citations, shared references and citations, is established to perform a two-step agglomerative clustering that first connects individual papers and then merges similar clusters. This parameterized model is optimized using an h-index based recall measure, favoring the correct assignment of well-cited publications, and a name-initials-based precision using WoS metadata and cross-referenced Google Scholar profiles. Despite the use of limited metadata, we reach a recall of 87% and a precision of 88% with a preference for researchers with high h-index values. 47 million articles of WoS can be disambiguated on a single machine in less than a day. We develop an h-index distribution model, confirming that the prediction is in excellent agreement with the empirical data, and yielding insight into the utility of the h-index in real academic ranking scenarios.
We propose and analyze algorithms for distributionally robust optimization of convex losses with conditional value at risk (CVaR) and $chi^2$ divergence uncertainty sets. We prove that our algorithms require a number of gradient evaluations independe nt of training set size and number of parameters, making them suitable for large-scale applications. For $chi^2$ uncertainty sets these are the first such guarantees in the literature, and for CVaR our guarantees scale linearly in the uncertainty level rather than quadratically as in previous work. We also provide lower bounds proving the worst-case optimality of our algorithms for CVaR and a penalized version of the $chi^2$ problem. Our primary technical contributions are novel bounds on the bias of batch robust risk estimation and the variance of a multilevel Monte Carlo gradient estimator due to [Blanchet & Glynn, 2015]. Experiments on MNIST and ImageNet confirm the theoretical scaling of our algorithms, which are 9--36 times more efficient than full-batch methods.
We introduce a few variants on Frank-Wolfe style algorithms suitable for large scale optimization. We show how to modify the standard Frank-Wolfe algorithm using stochastic gradients, approximate subproblem solutions, and sketched decision variables in order to scale to enormous problems while preserving (up to constants) the optimal convergence rate $mathcal{O}(frac{1}{k})$.
The offset optimization problem seeks to coordinate and synchronize the timing of traffic signals throughout a network in order to enhance traffic flow and reduce stops and delays. Recently, offset optimization was formulated into a continuous optimi zation problem without integer variables by modeling traffic flow as sinusoidal. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm to solve this new formulation to near-global optimality on a large-scale. Specifically, we solve a convex relaxation of the nonconvex problem using a tree decomposition reduction, and use randomized rounding to recover a near-global solution. We prove that the algorithm always delivers solutions of expected value at least 0.785 times the globally optimal value. Moreover, assuming that the topology of the traffic network is tree-like, we prove that the algorithm has near-linear time complexity with respect to the number of intersections. These theoretical guarantees are experimentally validated on the Berkeley, Manhattan, and Los Angeles traffic networks. In our numerical results, the empirical time complexity of the algorithm is linear, and the solutions have objectives within 0.99 times the globally optimal value.
