The sample of candidate faint high latitude carbon (FHLC) stars chosen from the Hamburg/ESO survey is a potential source to search for objects of rare types. From medium resolution spectral analyses of about 250 objects from this sample, the object HE 1015-2050, was found to be a hydrogen-deficient carbon (HdC) star. Apart from U Aquarii, HE 1015-2050 is the only example, till now, of a Galactic cool HdC star that is characterized by strong spectral features of light s-process element Sr, and weak features of heavy s-process elements such as Ba. This object, with its enhanced carbon and hydrogen-deficiency, together with anomalous s- process spectral features, poses a challenge as far as the understanding of its formation mechanism is concerned. We discuss possible mechanisms for its formation in the framework of existing scenarios of HdC star formation.

We obtain estimates of stellar atmospheric parameters for a previously published sample of 1777 relatively bright (9 < B < 14) metal-poor candidates from the Hamburg/ESO Survey. The original Frebel et al. analysis of these stars was only able to deri ve estimates of [Fe/H] and [C/Fe] for a subset of the sample, due to limitations in the methodology then available. A new spectroscopic analysis pipeline has been used to obtain estimates of Teff, log g, [Fe/H], and [C/Fe] for almost the entire dataset. This sample is very local - about 90% of the stars are located within 0.5 kpc of the Sun. We consider the chemodynamical properties of these stars in concert with a similarly local sample of stars from a recent analysis of the Bidelman & MacConnell weak-metal candidates by Beers et al. We use this combined sample to identify possible members of the suggested halo stream of stars by Helmi et al. and Chiba & Beers, as well as stars that may be associated with stripped debris from the putative parent dwarf of the globular cluster Omega Centauri, suggested to exist by previous authors. We identify a clear increase in the cumulative frequency of carbon-enhanced metal-poor (CEMP) stars with declining metallicity, as well as an increase in the fraction of CEMP stars with distance from the Galactic plane, consistent with previous results. We also identify a relatively large number of CEMP stars with kinematics consistent with the metal-weak thick-disk population, with possible implications for its origin.
Recent and on-going large ground-based multi-object spectroscopic surveys allow to significantly increase the sample of spectroscopic binaries to get insight into their statistical properties. We investigate the repeated spectral observations of the Gaia-ESO Survey (GES) internal data release 5 to identify and characterize spectroscopic binaries with one visible component (SB1) in fields covering the discs, the bulge, the CoRot fields, and stellar clusters and associations. A statistical chi2-test is performed on spectra of the iDR5 sub-sample of approximately 43500 stars characterized by at least 2 observations and a S/N > 3. Our sample of RV variables is cleaned from contamination by pulsation/convection-induced variables using Gaia DR2 parallaxes and photometry. Monte-Carlo simulations using the SB9 catalogue of spectroscopic orbits allow to estimate our detection efficiency and to correct the SB1 rate to evaluate the GES SB1 binary fraction and its dependence with effective temperature and metallicity. We find 641 (resp., 803) FGK SB1 candidates at the 5 sigma (resp., 3 sigma) level. The orbital-period distribution is estimated from the RV standard-deviation distribution and reveals that the detected SB1 probe binaries with log(P[d]) < 4. We estimate the global GES SB1 fraction to be in the range 7-14% with a typical uncertainty of 4%. The GES SB1 frequency decreases with metallicity at a rate of -9+/-3%/dex in the metallicity range -2.7<FeH<+0.6. This anticorrelation is obtained with a confidence level higher than 93% on a homogeneous sample covering spectral types FGK and a large range of metallicities. When the present-day mass function is accounted for, this rate turns to 4+/-2%/dex with a confidence level higher than 88%. In addition we provide the variation of the SB1 fraction with metallicity separately for F, G, and K spectral types, as well as for dwarf and giant primaries.

The extensive stellar spectroscopic datasets that are available for studies in Galactic Archeaology thanks to, for example, the Gaia-ESO Survey, now benefit from having a significant number of targets that overlap with asteroseismology projects such as Kepler, K2 and CoRoT. Combining the measurements from spectroscopy and asteroseismology allows us to attain greater accuracy with regard to the stellar parameters needed to characterise the stellar populations of the Milky Way. The aim of this Gaia-ESO Survey special project is to produce a catalogue of self-consistent stellar parameters by combining measurements from high-resolution spectroscopy and precision asteroseismology. We carried out an iterative analysis of 90 K2@Gaia-ESO red giants. The spectroscopic values of Teff were used as input in the seismic analysis to obtain log(g) values. The seismic estimates of log(g) were then used to re-determine the spectroscopic values of Teff and [Fe/H]. Only one iteration was required to obtain parameters that are in good agreement for both methods and thus, to obtain the final stellar parameters. A detailed analysis of outliers was carried out to ensure a robust determination of the parameters. The results were then combined with Gaia DR2 data to compare the seismic log(g) with a parallax-based log(g) and to investigate instances of variations in the velocity and possible binaries within the dataset. This analysis produced a high-quality catalogue of stellar parameters for 90 red giant stars observed by both K2 and Gaia-ESO that were determined through iterations between spectroscopy and asteroseismology. We compared the seismic gravities with those based on Gaia parallaxes to find an offset which is similar to other studies that have used asteroseismology. Our catalogue also includes spectroscopic chemical abundances and radial velocities, as well as indicators for possible binary detections.

Aims. The aim of this study is a detailed abundance analysis of the newly discovered r-rich star HE 1405 0822, which has [Fe=H]=-2.40. This star shows enhancements of both r- and s-elements, [Ba/Fe]= +1.95 and [Eu/Fe]=1.54, for which reason it is call ed r+s star. Methods.Stellar parameters and element abundances were determined by analying high-quality VLT/UVES spectra. We used Fe I line excitation equilibria to derive the effective temperature. The surface gravity was calculated from the Fei/Feii and Ti I/Ti II equilibria. Results. We determined accurate abundances for 39 elements, including 19 neutron-capture elements. HE 1405-0822 is a red giant. Its strong enhancements of C, N, and s-elements are the consequence of enrichment by a former AGB companion with an initial mass of less than 3 M_Sun. The heavy n-capture element abundances (including Eu, Yb, and Hf) seen in HE 1405-0822 do not agree with the r-process pattern seen in strongly r-process-enhanced stars. We discuss possible enrichment scenarios for this star. The enhanced alpha elements can be explained as the result of enrichment by supernovae of type II. Na and Mg may have partly been synthesized in a former AGB companion, when the primary 22^Ne acted as a neutron poison in the 13^C-pocket.
We determined the silicon abundances of 253 metal-poor stars in the metallicity range $-4<mathrm{[Fe/H]} <-1.5$, based on non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) line formation calculations of neutral silicon and high-resolution spectra obtained w ith VLT-UT2/UVES. The $T_{mathrm{eff}}$ dependence of [Si/Fe] noticed in previous investigation is diminished in our abundance analysis due to the inclusion of NLTE effects. An increasing slope of [Si/Fe] towards decreasing metallicity is present in our results, in agreement with Galactic chemical evolution models. The small intrinsic scatter of [Si/Fe] in our sample may imply that these stars formed in a region where the yields of type II supernovae were mixed into a large volume, or that the formation of these stars was strongly clustered, even if the ISM was enriched by single SNa II in a small mixing volume. We identified two dwarfs with $mathrm{[Si/Fe]}sim +1.0$: HE 0131$-$3953, and HE 1430$-$1123. These main-sequence turnoff stars are also carbon-enhanced. They might have been pre-enriched by sub-luminous supernovae.
