One goal of contemporary particle physics is to determine the mixing angles and mass-squared differences that constitute the phenomenological constants that describe neutrino oscillations. Of great interest are not only the best fit values of these constants but also their errors. Some of the neutrino oscillation data is statistically poor and cannot be treated by normal (Gaussian) statistics. To extract confidence intervals when the statistics are not normal, one should not utilize the value for chisquare versus confidence level taken from normal statistics. Instead, we propose that one should use the normalized likelihood function as a probability distribution; the relationship between the correct chisquare and a given confidence level can be computed by integrating over the likelihood function. This allows for a definition of confidence level independent of the functional form of the !2 function; it is particularly useful for cases in which the minimum of the !2 function is near a boundary. We present two pedagogic examples and find that the proposed method yields confidence intervals that can differ significantly from those obtained by using the value of chisquare from normal statistics. For example, we find that for the first data release of the T2K experiment the probability that chisquare is not zero, as defined by the maximum confidence level at which the value of zero is not allowed, is 92%. Using the value of chisquare at zero and assigning a confidence level from normal statistics, a common practice, gives the over estimation of 99.5%.

A neutrino-oscillation analysis is performed of the more finely binned Super-K atmospheric, MINOS, and CHOOZ data in order to examine the impact of neutrino hierarchy in this data set upon the value of $theta_{13}$ and the deviation of $theta_{23}$ f rom maximal mixing. Exact oscillation probabilities are used, thus incorporating all powers of $theta_{13}$ and $epsilon :=theta_{23}-pi/4$. The extracted oscillation parameters are found to be dependent on the hierarchy, particularly for $theta_{13}$. We find at 90% CL are $Delta_{32} = 2.44^{+0.26}_{-0.20}$ and $2.48^{+0.25}_{-0.22}times 10^{-3} {rm eV}^2$, $epsilon=theta_{23}-pi/4=0.06^{+0.06}_{-0.16}$ and $0.06^{+0.08}_{-0.17}$, and $theta_{13}=-0.07^{+0.18}_{-0.11}$ and $-0.13^{+0.23}_{-0.16}$, for the normal and inverted hierarchy respectively. The inverted hierarchy is preferred at a statistically insignificant level of 0.3 $sigma$.

Geo-reactor models suggest the existence of natural nuclear reactors at different deep-earth locations with loosely defined output power. Reactor fission products undergo beta decay with the emission of electron antineutrinos, which routinely escape the earth. Neutrino mixing distorts the energy spectrum of the electron antineutrinos. Characteristics of the distorted spectrum observed at the earths surface could specify the location of a geo-reactor, discriminating the models and facilitating more precise power measurement. The existence of a geo-reactor with known position could enable a precision measurement of the neutrino oscillation parameter delta-mass-squared.
Neutrino mixing parameters are subject to quantum corrections and hence are scale dependent. This means that the mixing parameters associated to the production and detection of neutrinos need not coincide since these processes are characterized by di fferent energy scales. We show that, in the presence of relatively light new physics, the scale dependence of the mixing parameters can lead to observable consequences in long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, such as T2K and NOvA, and in neutrino telescopes like IceCube. We discuss some of the experimental signatures of this scenario, including zero-baseline flavor transitions, new sources of CP-invariance violation, and apparent inconsistencies among measurements of mixing angles at different experiments or oscillation channels. Finally, we present simple, ultraviolet-complete models of neutrino masses which lead to observable running of the neutrino mixing matrix below the weak scale.
We assess the utility of an optimization-based data assimilation (D.A.) technique for treating the problem of nonlinear neutrino flavor transformation in core collapse supernovae. D.A. uses measurements obtained from a physical system to estimate the state variable evolution and parameter values of the associated model. Formulated as an optimization procedure, D.A. can offer an integration-blind approach to predicting model evolution, which offers an advantage for models that thwart solution via traditional numerical integration techniques. Further, D.A. performs most optimally for models whose equations of motion are nonlinearly coupled. In this exploratory work, we consider a simple steady-state model with two mono-energetic neutrino beams coherently interacting with each other and a background medium. As this model can be solved via numerical integration, we have an independent consistency check for D.A. solutions. We find that the procedure can capture key features of flavor evolution over the entire trajectory, even given measurements of neutrino flavor only at the endpoint, and with an assumed known initial flavor distribution. Further, the procedure permits an examination of the sensitivity of flavor evolution to estimates of unknown model parameters, locates degeneracies in parameter space, and can identify the specific measurements required to break those degeneracies.
We borrow the general idea of renormalization-group equations (RGEs) to understand how neutrino masses and flavor mixing parameters evolve when neutrinos propagate in a medium, highlighting a meaningful possibility that the genuine flavor quantities in vacuum can be extrapolated from their matter-corrected counterparts to be measured in some realistic neutrino oscillation experiments. Taking the matter parameter $a equiv 2sqrt{2} G^{}_{rm F} N^{}_e E$ to be an arbitrary scale-like variable with $N^{}_e$ being the net electron number density and $E$ being the neutrino beam energy, we derive a complete set of differential equations for the effective neutrino mixing matrix $V$ and the effective neutrino masses $widetilde{m}^{}_i$ (for $i = 1, 2, 3$). Given the standard parametrization of $V$, the RGEs for ${widetilde{theta}^{}_{12}, widetilde{theta}^{}_{13}, widetilde{theta}^{}_{23}, widetilde{delta}}$ in matter are formulated for the first time. We demonstrate some useful differential invariants which retain the same form from vacuum to matter, including the well-known Naumov and Toshev relations. The RGEs of the partial $mu$-$tau$ asymmetries, the off-diagonal asymmetries and the sides of unitarity triangles of $V$ are also obtained as a by-product.
