Methods of extraction of the symmetry energy (or enthalpy) coefficient to temperature ratio from isobaric and isotopic yields of fragments produced in Fermi-energy heavy-ion collisions are discussed. We show that the methods are consistent when the hot fragmenting source is well characterized and its excitation energy and isotopic composition are properly taken into account. The results are independent of the mass number of the detected fragments, which suggests that their fate is decided very early in the reaction.

The elliptic-flow ratio of neutrons with respect to protons in reactions of neutron rich heavy-ions systems at intermediate energies has been proposed as an observable sensitive to the strength of the symmetry term in the nuclear Equation Of State (E OS) at supra-saturation densities. The recent results obtained from the existing FOPI/LAND data for $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions at 400 MeV/nucleon in comparison with the UrQMD model allowed a first estimate of the symmetry term of the EOS but suffer from a considerable statistical uncertainty. In order to obtain an improved data set for Au+Au collisions and to extend the study to other systems, a new experiment was carried out at the GSI laboratory by the ASY-EOS collaboration in May 2011.
We derive the free energy for fermions and bosons from fragmentation data. Inspired by the symmetry and pairing energy of the Weizsacker mass formula we obtain the free energy of fermions (nucleons) and bosons (alphas and deuterons) using Landaus fre e energy approach. We confirm previously obtained results for fermions and show that the free energy for alpha particles is negative and very close to the free energy for ideal Bose gases. Deuterons behave more similarly to fermions (positive free energy) rather than bosons. This is due to their low binding energy, which makes them very fragile, i.e., easily formed and destroyed. We show that the {alpha}-particle fraction is dominant at all temperatures and densities explored in this work. This is consistent with their negative free energy, which favors clusterization of nuclear matter into {alpha}-particles at subsaturation densities and finite temperatures. The role of finite open systems and Coulomb repulsion is addressed.
Within an isospin- and momentum-dependent hadronic transport model it is shown that the recent FOPI data on the $pi^-/pi^+$ ratio in central heavy-ion collisions at SIS/GSI energies (Willy Reisdorf {it et al.}, NPA {bf 781}, 459 (2007)) provide circu mstantial evidence suggesting a rather soft nuclear symmetry energy esym at $rhogeq 2rho_0$ compared to the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall prediction. Some astrophysical implications and the need for further experimental confirmations are discussed.

Motivated by the historical detection of gravitational waves from GW170817, the neutron star and the neutron drop, i.e., a certain number of neutrons confined in an external field, are systematically investigated by ab initio calculations as well as the nonrelativistic and relativistic state-of-art density functional theories. Strong correlations are found among the neutron star tidal deformability, the neutron star radius, the root-mean-square radii of neutron drops, and the symmetry energies of nuclear matter at supra-saturation densities. From these correlations and the upper limit on the tidal deformability extracted from GW170817, the neutron star radii, the neutron drop radii, and the symmetry energy at twice saturation density are respectively constrained as $R_{1.4M_{odot}}leqslant 12.94$ km, $R_{rm nd} leqslant 2.36$ fm, and $E_{mathrm{sym}}(2rho_0) leqslant 53.2$ MeV.
Recent measurements of pre-equilibrium neutron and proton transverse emission from (112,124)Sn+(112,124)Sn reactions at 50 MeV/A have been completed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. Free nucleon transverse emission ratios are com pared to those of A=3 mirror nuclei. Comparisons are made to BUU transport calculations and conclusions concerning the density dependence of the asymmetry term of the nuclear equation-of-state at sub-nuclear densities are made. The double-ratio of neutron-proton ratios between two reactions is employed as a means of reducing first-order Coulomb effects and detector efficiency effects. Comparison to BUU model predictions indicate a density dependence of the asymmetry energy that is closer to a form in which the asymmety energy increases as the square root of the density for the density region studied. A coalescent-invariant analysis is introduced as a means of reducing suggested difficulties with cluster emission in total nucleon emission. Future experimentation is presented.
