Non-dispersive wave packet for massless fermions is formulated on the basis of squeezed coherent states that are put in a form of common eigenfunction for the Hamiltonian and the helicity operator, starting from the Dirac equation. The wave packet thus constructed is demonstrated to propagate at a constant velocity as that of light. This explicit expression of wave packet for the massless fermions can facilitate theoretical analysis of problems where a wave packet is of formal significance. Furthermore, extensive wave packet may result in a superluminal velocity statistics if determined from the time-of-flight measurement, as recently done on muon neutrinos, when a threshold particle flux or energy transfer, which is eventually referred to the propagation of wave packet, to invoke a detection event is assumed.

This is a brief note discussing the energy dependence of superluminal neutrino velocities recently claimed by OPERA [1,2]. The analysis is based on the data provided there on this issue, as well as on consistency with neutrino data from SN1987a as re corded by the Kamioka detector [3]. It is seen that it is quite difficult to reconcile OPERA with SN1987a. The so called Coleman- Glashow dispersion relations do not do that well, if applied at all neutrino energies. The so called quantum gravity inspired dispersion relations perform far worse. Near OPERA energies both an energy-independent velocity, as well as a linear energy dependence with an offset that is comparable in value to the observed {delta}v by OPERA at 28.1 GeV works very well. Our analysis shows that precision arrival time data from SN1987a still allow for superluminal behaviour for supernova neutrinos. A smooth interpolation is given that reconciles OPERA and SN1987a quite well. It suggests a fourth power energy dependence for {delta}v of supernova neutrinos. This behaviour is insensitive to whether the velocities are energy-independent, or linearly dependent on energy, near OPERA scale of energies. Suggestions are made for experimental checks for these relations.

In this thesis, we study the breakdown of the Fermi liquid state in cuprate superconductors using the renormalization group (RG). We seek to extend earlier work on the crossover from the Fermi liquid state to the pseudo gap phase based on RG flows in the so-called saddle point regime. Progress in the derivation of effective models for the conjectured spin liquid state has been hindered, by the difficulties involved in solving the strong coupling low energy Hamiltonian. We tackle the problem by introducing an orthogonal wave packet basis, the so-called Wilson-Wannier (WW) basis, that can be used to interpolate between the momentum space and the real space descriptions. We show how to combine the WW basis with the RG, such that the RG is used to eliminate high-energy degrees of freedom, and the remaining strongly correlated system is solved approximately in the WW basis. We exemplify the approach for different one-dimensional model systems, and find good qualitative agreement with exact solutions even for very simple approximations. Finally, we reinvestigate the saddle point regime of the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We show that the anti-nodal states are driven to an insulating spin-liquid state with strong singlet pairing correlations, thus corroborating earlier conjectures.

Flavor oscillation of traveling neutrinos is treated by solving the one-dimensional Dirac equation for massive fermions. The solutions are given in terms of squeezed coherent state as mutual eigenfunctions of parity operator and the corresponding Ham iltonian, both represented in bosonic creation and annihilation operators. It was shown that a mono-energetic state is non-normalizable, and a normalizable Gaussian wave packet, when of pure parity, cannot propagate. A physical state for a traveling neutrino beam would be represented as a normalizable Gaussian wave packet of equally-weighted mixing of two parities, which has the largest energy-dependent velocity. Based on this wave-packet representation, flavor oscillation of traveling neutrinos can be treated in a strict sense. These results allow the accurate interpretation of experimental data for neutrino oscillation, which is critical in judging whether neutrino oscillation violates CP symmetry.
Kinematical aspects of pion decay $pi to mu u$ is studied, with neutrino mixing taken into account. An attempt is made to derive the transition probability for such a sequence of processes: a $pi^+$ produced at $(vec{x}_{pi},t_{pi})$ with momentum $ vec{p}_{pi}$ decays into a $mu^+$ and a $ u_{mu}$ somewhere in space-time and then the $mu^+$ is detected at $(vec{x}_{mu},t_{mu})$ with momentum $vec{p}_{mu}$ and a $ u_{alpha}$ (a neutrino with flavor $alpha = e$, $mu$, $...$) is detected at $(vec{x}_{ u},t_{ u})$ with momentum $vec{p}_{ u}$. It is shown that (1) if all the particles involved are treated as plane-waves, the energy-momentum conservation would eliminate the neutrino oscillating terms, leaving each mass-eigenstate to contribute separately to the transition probability; (2) if one treats all the particles involved as wave-packets, the neutrino oscillating terms would appear and would be multiplied by two suppression factors, which result from distinction in velocity and in energy between the two interfering neutrino mass-eigenstates. An approximate treatment which takes account of the two complementary features, each of the particles involved propagates along its classical trajectory on the one hand and energies and momenta of the particles involved are conserved during the decay on the other hand, is proposed and similarity and difference between our approach and that of Dolgov et al. are discussed.
We consider a class of models for the relativistic covariant wave packets which can be used as asymptotically free in and out states in the quantum field theoretical formalisms for description of the neutrino flavor oscillation phenomenon. We demonst rate that the new asymmetric wave packet (AWP) is an appropriate alternative for the more convenient symmetric wave packets, like the so-called relativistic Gaussian packet (RGP) widely used in the QFT-based approaches to neutrino oscillations. We show that RGP is not a particular case of AWP, although many properties of these models are almost identical in the quasistable regime. We discuss some features of AWP distinguishing it from RGP.
