Recently, we reported an anomalous enhancement of the positive magnetoresistance beyond a critical magnetic field in Tb5Si3 in the magnetically ordered state, attributable to inverse metamagnetism. This results in unusual magnetic hysteresis loops for the pressurized specimens, which are relevant to the topic of electronic phase separation. In this paper, we report the influence of small substitutions of Lu for Tb, to show the evolution of these magnetic anomalies. We find that, at low temperatures, the high-field high-resistivity phase could be partially stabilized on returning the magnetic field to zero in many of these Lu substituted alloys, as measured through the electrical resistivity ({rho}). Also, the relative fractions of this phase and the virgin phase appear to be controlled by a small tuning of the composition and temperature. Interestingly, at 1.8 K a sudden switch-over of the value of {rho} for this mixed phase to that for the virgin phase for some compositions is observed at low fields after a few field cycles, indicating metastability of this mixed phase.

The random substitutional solid solution between the antiferromagnetic (AFM) full-Heusler alloy Ru$_2$MnSn and the ferromagnetic (FM) full-Heusler alloy Ru$_2$FeSn provides a rare opportunity to study FM-AFM phase competition in a near-lattice-matche d, cubic system, with full solubility. At intermediate $x$ in Ru$_2$Mn$_{1-x}$Fe$_x$Sn this system displays suppressed magnetic ordering temperatures, spatially coexisting FM and AFM order, and strong coercivity enhancement, despite rigorous chemical homogeneity. Here, we construct the most detailed temperature- and $x$-dependent understanding of the magnetic phase competition and coexistence in this system to date, combining wide-temperature-range neutron diffraction and small-angle neutron scattering with magnetometry and specific heat measurements on thoroughly characterized polycrystals. A complete magnetic phase diagram is generated, showing FM-AFM coexistence between $x approx 0.30$ and $x approx 0.70$. Important new insight is gained from the extracted length scales for magnetic phase coexistence (25-100 nm), the relative magnetic volume fractions and ordering temperatures, in addition to remarkable $x$-dependent trends in magnetic and electronic contributions to specific heat. An unusual feature in the magnetic phase diagram (an intermediate FM phase) is also shown to arise from an extrinsic effect related to a minor Ru-rich secondary phase. The established magnetic phase diagram is then discussed with the aid of phenomenological modeling, clarifying the nature of the mesoscale phase coexistence with respect to the understanding of disordered Heisenberg models.
The magnetic phase diagram of magnetoelectric LiCoPO$_4$ is established using neutron diffraction and magnetometry in fields up to 25.9T applied along the crystallographic $b$-axis. For fields greater than 11.9T the magnetic unit cell triples in size with propagation vector Q = (0, 1/3, 0). A magnetized elliptic cycloid is formed with spins in the $(b,c)$-plane and the major axis oriented along $b$. Such a structure allows for the magnetoelectric effect with an electric polarization along $c$ induced by magnetic fields applied along $b$. Intriguingly, additional ordering vectors Q $approx$ (0, 1/4, 0) and Q $approx$ (0, 1/2, 0) appear for increasing fields in the hysteresis region below the transition field. Traces of this behavior are also observed in the magnetization. A simple model based on a mean-field approach is proposed to explain these additional ordering vectors. In the field interval 20.5-21.0T, the propagation vector Q = (0, 1/3, 0) remains but the spins orient differently compared to the cycloid phase. Above 21.0T and up until saturation a commensurate magnetic structure exists with a ferromagnetic component along $b$ and an antiferromagnetic component along $c$.
The phase diagram of the filled skutterudite CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ has been mapped in fields $H$ of up to 60 T and temperatures $T$ down to 0.5 K using resistivity, magnetostriction, and MHz conductivity. The valence transition separating the semimetalli c, low-$H$, low-$T$, $cal{L}$ phase from the metallic high-$H$, high-$T$ $cal{H}$ phase exhibits a very unusual, wedge-shaped phase boundary, with a non-monotonic gradient alternating between positive and negative. This is quite different from the text-book elliptical phase boundary usually followed by valence transitions. Analysis of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations within the $cal{H}$ phase reveals an effective mass that increases as $H$ drops toward the $cal{H-L}$ phase boundary, suggesting proximity to a quantum-critical point. The associated magnetic fluctuations may be responsible for the anomalous $H,T$ dependence of the valence transition at high $H$, whereas the low$-H$, high$-T$ portion of the phase boundary may rather be associated with the proximity of CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ to a topological semimetal phase induced by uniaxial stress.

Combining quasistatic and time-resolved transport measurements with X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments we study the non-equilibrium states that arise in pure and in Ti substituted Ca$_2$RuO$_4$ under the application of current densities. Time- resolved studies of the current-induced switching find a slow conductance relaxation that can be identified with heating and a fast one that unambiguously proves an intrinsic mechanism. The current-induced phase transition leads to complex diffraction patterns. Separated Bragg reflections that can be associated with the metallic and insulating phases by their lattice parameters, indicate a real structure with phase coexistence that strongly varies with temperature and current strength. A third contribution with a $c$ lattice constant in between those of metallic and insulating phases appears upon cooling. At low current densities, this additional phase appears below $sim$100 K and is accompanied by a suppression of the antiferromagnetic order that otherwise can coexist with current carrying states. A possible origin of the intermediate phase is discussed.
We present magnetic and transport measurements on La5/8-yPryCa3/8MnO3 with y = 0.3, a manganite compound exhibiting intrinsic multiphase coexistence of sub-micrometric ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic charge ordered regions. Time relaxation effect s between 60 and 120K, and the obtained magnetic and resistive viscosities, unveils the dynamic nature of the phase separated state. An experimental procedure based on the derivative of the time relaxation after the application and removal of a magnetic field enables the determination of the otherwise unreachable equilibrium state of the phase separated system. With this procedure the equilibrium phase fraction for zero field as a function of temperature is obtained. The presented results allow a correlation between the distance of the system to the equilibrium state and its relaxation behavior.
