We present a calculation of the ratio of the charm quark mass to the strange quark mass. Using the Brillouin improved Wilson action, we are able to calculate this ratio in a single framework, using a relativistic fermionic action throughout. The calculation is carried out on selected ensembles of two flavor clover improved lattices produced by the QCDSF collaboration, allowing an extrapolation to the continuum, to infinite volume and to the physical pion mass.

We present an update of results from the HPQCD collaboration on charm physics using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action. This includes a precise determination of m_c using moments of current-current correlators combined with high-order continu um QCD perturbation theory. We also include an update on the determination of alpha_s from lattice QCD, preliminary results on the determination of m_b and a summary plot of the status of the gold-plated meson spectrum. There is an appendix on tackling systematic errors in fitting using the Bayesian approach.
We study the finite temperature localization transition in the spectrum of the overlap Dirac operator. Simulating the quenched approximation of QCD, we calculate the mobility edge, separating localized and delocalized modes in the spectrum. We do thi s at several temperatures just above the deconfining transition and by extrapolation we determine the temperature where the mobility edge vanishes and localized modes completely disappear from the spectrum. We find that this temperature, where even the lowest Dirac eigenmodes become delocalized, coincides with the critical temperature of the deconfining transition. This result, together with our previously obtained similar findings for staggered fermions shows that quark localization at the deconfining temperature is independent of the fermion discretization, suggesting that deconfinement and localization of the lowest Dirac eigenmodes are closely related phenomena.
Using recent values of alpha_s, the gluon condensates <alpha_s G^2> and <g^3 f_abcG^3> and the new data on the psi/Upsilon-families, we update our determinations of the MS-bar running quark masses m_c,b(m_c,b) from the SVZ-Moments M_n(Q^2) and their ratios by including higher order perturbative (PT) corrections, non-perturbative (NPT) terms up to dimension d=8 and using the degree n-stability criteria of the (ratios of) moments. Optimal results from different (ratios of) moments converge to the accurate mean values: m_c(m_c)=1264(6) MeV} and m_b(m_b)=4188(8) MeV in Table 4, which improve and confirm our previous findings [1,2] and the recent ones from Laplace sum rules [3]. Comments on some other determinations of m_c(m_c) and <alpha_s G^2> from the SVZ-(ratios of) moments in the vector channel are given in Section 5.
QCD is investigated at finite temperature using Wilson fermions in the fixed scale approach. A 2+1 flavor stout and clover improved action is used at four lattice spacings allowing for control over discretization errors. The light quark masses in thi s first study are fixed to heavier than physical values. The renormalized chiral condensate, quark number susceptibility and the Polyakov loop is measured and the results are compared with the staggered formulation in the fixed N_t approach. The Wilson results at the finest lattice spacing agree with the staggered results at the highest N_t.
The variational method is used widely for determining eigenstates of the QCD hamiltonian for actions with a conventional transfer matrix, e.g., actions with improved Wilson fermions. An alternative lattice fermion formalism, staggered fermions, does not have a conventional single-time-step transfer matrix. Nonetheless, with a simple modification, the variational method can also be applied to that formalism. In some cases the method also provides a mechanism for separating the commonly paired parity-partner states. We discuss the extension to staggered fermions and illustrate it by applying it to the calculation of the spectrum of charmed-antistrange mesons consisting of a clover charm quark and a staggered strange antiquark.
