We analyze the results of scanning near-field infrared spectroscopy performed on thin films of a-SiO2 on Si substrate. The measured near-field signal exhibits surface-phonon resonances whose strength has a strong thickness dependence in the range from 2 to 300 {nm}. These observations are compared with calculations in which the tip of the near-field infrared spectrometer is modeled either as a point dipole or an elongated spheroid. The latter model accounts for the antenna effect of the tip and gives a better agreement with the experiment. Possible applications of the near-field technique for depth profiling of layered nanostructures are discussed.

We use apertureless scattering near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) to investigate the nanoscale optical response of vanadium dioxide (VO2) thin films through a temperature-induced insulator-to-metal transition (IMT). We compare images of the transit ion at both mid-infrared (MIR) and terahertz (THz) frequencies, using a custom-built broadband THz-SNOM compatible with both cryogenic and elevated temperatures. We observe that the character of spatial inhomogeneities in the VO2 film strongly depends on the probing frequency. In addition, we find that individual insulating (or metallic) domains have a temperature-dependent optical response, in contrast to the assumptions of a classical first-order phase transition. We discuss these results in light of dynamical mean-field theory calculations of the dimer Hubbard model recently applied to VO2.

We demonstrate an enhancement of the spin-orbit coupling in silicon (Si) thin films by doping with bismuth (Bi), a heavy metal, using ion implantation. Quantum corrections to conductance at low temperature in phosphorous-doped Si before and after Bi implantation is measured to probe the increase of the spin-orbit coupling, and a clear modification of magnetoconductance signals is observed: Bi doping changes magnetoconductance from weak localization to the crossover between weak localization and weak antilocalization. The elastic diffusion length, phase coherence length and spin-orbit coupling length in Si with and without Bi implantation are estimated, and the spin-orbit coupling length after the Bi doping becomes the same order of magnitude (Lso = 54 nm) with the phase coherence length (L{phi} = 35 nm) at 2 K. This is an experimental proof that the spin-orbit coupling strength in Si thin film is tunable by doping with heavy metals.
We report on the realization of silicon nitride membranes with enhanced and electrically tunable reflectivity. A subwavelength one-dimensional grating is directly patterned on a suspended 200 nm-thick, high stress commercial film using electron beam lithography. A Fano resonance is observed in the transmission spectrum of TM polarized light impinging on the membrane at normal incidence, leading to an increase in its reflectivity from 10% to 78% at 937 nm. The observed spectrum is compared to the results of rigorous coupled wave analysis simulations based on measurements of the grating transverse profile through localized cuts of the suspended film with a Focused Ion Beam. By mounting the membrane chip on a ring piezoelectric transducer and applying a compressive force to the substrate we subsequently observe a shift of the transmission spectrum by 0.23 nm.

We report that the finite thickness of three-dimensional topological insulator (TI) thin films produces an observable magnetoresistance (MR) in phase coherent transport in parallel magnetic fields. The MR data of Bi2Se3 and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 thin films are compared with existing theoretical models of parallel field magnetotransport. We conclude that the TI thin films bring parallel field transport into a unique regime in which the coupling of surface states to bulk and to opposite surfaces is indispensable for understanding the observed MR. The {beta} parameter extracted from parallel field MR can in principle provide a figure of merit for searching TI compounds with more insulating bulk than existing materials.
We present combined experimental and numerical work on light-matter interactions at nanometer length scales. We report novel numerical simulations of near-field infrared nanospectroscopy that consider, for the first time, detailed tip geometry and ha ve no free parameters. Our results match published spectral shapes of amplitude and phase measurements even for strongly resonant surface phonon-polariton (SPhP) modes. They also verify published absolute scattering amplitudes for the first time. A novel, ultrabroadband light source enables near-field amplitude and phase acquisition into the far-infrared spectral range. This allowed us to discover a strong SPhP resonance in the polar dielectric SrTiO3 (STO) at approximately 24 micrometer wavelength of incident light.
