Surface plasmon modes supported by graphene ribbon waveguides are studied and classified. The properties of both modes with the field concentration within the ribbon area (waveguiding modes) and on the edges (edge modes) are discussed. The waveguide and edge modes are shown to be separated from each other by a gap in wavenumbers. The even-parity hybridized edge mode results to be the fundamental electromagnetic mode of the ribbon, possessing also the lowest losses. All the plasmonic modes in the ribbons have an optimum frequency, at which the absorption losses are minimum, due to competition between the plasmon confinement and the frequency dependence of absorption in graphene.

Resonance diffraction in the periodic array of graphene micro-ribbons is theoretically studied following a recent experiment [L. Ju et al, Nature Nanotech. 6, 630 (2011)]. Systematic studies over a wide range of parameters are presented. It is shown that a much richer resonant picture would be observable for higher relaxation times of charge carriers: more resonances appear and transmission can be totally suppressed. The comparison with the absorption cross-section of a single ribbon shows that the resonant features of the periodic array are associated with leaky plasmonic modes. The longest-wavelength resonance provides the highest visibility of the transmission dip and has the strongest spectral shift and broadening with respect to the single-ribbon resonance, due to collective effects.
We investigate the plasmon dispersion relation and damping rate of collective excitations in a double-layer system consisting of bilayer graphene and GaAs quantum well, separated by a distance, at zero temperature with no interlayer tunneling. We use the random-phase-approximation dielectric function and take into account the nonhomogeneity of the dielectric background of the system. We show that the plasmon frequencies and damping rates depend considerably on interlayer correlation parameters, electron densities and dielectric constants of the contacting media.
We provide an analytical solution to the problem of scattering of electromagnetic radiation by a square-wave grating with a flat graphene sheet on top. We show that for deep groves there is a strong plasmonic response with light absorption in the gra phene sheet reaching more than 45%, due to the excitation of surface plasmon-polaritons. The case of grating with a graphene sheet presenting an induced periodic modulation of the conductivity is also discussed.
Surface plasmon-polaritons have recently attracted renewed interest in the scientific community for their potential in sub-wavelength optics, light generation and non-destructive sensing. Given that they cannot be directly excited by freely propagati ng light due to their intrinsical binding to the metal surface, the light-plasmon coupling efficiency becomes of crucial importance for the success of any plasmonic device. Here we present a comprehensive study on the modulation (enhancement or suppression) of such coupling efficiency by means of one-dimensional surface corrugation. Our approach is based on simple wave interference and enables us to make quantitative predictions which have been experimentally confirmed at both the near infra-red and telecom ranges.

We report on nano-infrared (IR) imaging studies of confined plasmon modes inside patterned graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) fabricated with high-quality chemical-vapor-deposited (CVD) graphene on Al2O3 substrates. The confined geometry of these ribbons le ads to distinct mode patterns and strong field enhancement, both of which evolve systematically with the ribbon width. In addition, spectroscopic nano-imaging in mid-infrared 850-1450 cm-1 allowed us to evaluate the effect of the substrate phonons on the plasmon damping. Furthermore, we observed edge plasmons: peculiar one-dimensional modes propagating strictly along the edges of our patterned graphene nanostructures.
