We report on the exciton spin dynamics of nanowire embedded GaN/AlN Quantum Dots (QDs) investigated by time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. Under a linearly polarized quasiresonant excitation we evidence the quenching of the exciton spin relaxation and a temperature insensitive degree of the exciton linear polarization, demonstrating the robustness of the optical alignment of the exciton spin in these nanowire embedded QDs. A detailed examination of the luminescence polarization angular dependence shows orthogonal linear exciton eigenstates with no preferential crystallographic orientation.

We present a fully three-dimensional study of the multiexciton optical response of vertically coupled GaN-based quantum dots via a direct-diagonalization approach. The proposed analysis is crucial in understanding the fundamental properties of few-pa rticle/exciton interactions and, more important, may play an essential role in the design/optimization of semiconductor-based quantum information processing schemes. In particular, we focus on the interdot exciton-exciton coupling, key ingredient in recently proposed all-optical quantum processors. Our analysis demonstrates that there is a large window of realistic parameters for which both biexcitonic shift and oscillator strength are compatible with such implementation schemes.
The optical orientation of the exciton spin in an ensemble of self-organized cubic GaN/AlN quantum dots is studied by time-resolved photoluminescence. Under a polarized quasi-resonant excitation, the luminescence linear polarization exhibits no tempo ral decay, even at room temperature. This demonstrates the robustness of the exciton spin polarization in these cubic nitride nanostructures, with characteristic decay times longer than 10 ns.
We investigate exciton spin memory in individual InAs/GaAs self-assembled quantum dots via optical alignment and conversion of exciton polarization in a magnetic field. Quasiresonant phonon-assisted excitation is successfully employed to define the i nitial spin polarization of neutral excitons. The conservation of the linear polarization generated along the bright exciton eigenaxes of up to 90% and the conversion from circular- to linear polarization of up to 47% both demonstrate a very long spin relaxation time with respect to the radiative lifetime. Results are quantitatively compared with a model of pseudo-spin 1/2 including heavy-to-light hole mixing.
The optical emission of InGaN quantum dots embedded in GaN nanowires is dynamically controlled by a surface acoustic wave (SAW). The emission energy of both the exciton and biexciton lines is modulated over a 1.5 meV range at ~330 MHz. A small but sy stematic difference in the exciton and biexciton spectral modulation reveals a linear change of the biexciton binding energy with the SAW amplitude. The present results are relevant for the dynamic control of individual single photon emitters based on nitride semiconductors.

We compare the quality factor values of the whispery gallery modes of microdisks incorporating GaN quantum dots (QDs) grown on AlN and AlGaN barriers by performing room temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The PL measurements show a large number of high Q factor (Q) resonant modes on the whole spectrum which allows us to identify the different radial mode families and to compare them with simulations. We report a considerable improvement of the Q factor which reflect the etching quality and the relatively low cavity loss by inserting QDs into the cavity. GaN/AlN QDs based microdisks show very high Q values (Q > 7000) whereas the Q factor is only up to 2000 in microdisks embedding QDs grown on AlGaN barrier layer. We attribute this difference to the lower absorption below bandgap for AlN barrier layers at the energies of our experimental investigation.
