We study chaotic orbits of conservative low--dimensional maps and present numerical results showing that the probability density functions (pdfs) of the sum of $N$ iterates in the large $N$ limit exhibit very interesting time-evolving statistics. In some cases where the chaotic layers are thin and the (positive) maximal Lyapunov exponent is small, long--lasting quasi--stationary states (QSS) are found, whose pdfs appear to converge to $q$--Gaussians associated with nonextensive statistical mechanics. More generally, however, as $N$ increases, the pdfs describe a sequence of QSS that pass from a $q$--Gaussian to an exponential shape and ultimately tend to a true Gaussian, as orbits diffuse to larger chaotic domains and the phase space dynamics becomes more uniformly ergodic.

We consider random matrices of the form $H_N=A_N+U_N B_N U^*_N$, where $A_N$, $B_N$ are two $N$ by $N$ deterministic Hermitian matrices and $U_N$ is a Haar distributed random unitary matrix. We establish a universal Central Limit Theorem for the line ar eigenvalue statistics of $H_N$ on all mesoscopic scales inside the regular bulk of the spectrum. The proof is based on studying the characteristic function of the linear eigenvalue statistics, and consists of two main steps: (1) generating Ward identities using the left-translation-invariance of the Haar measure, along with a local law for the resolvent of $H_N$ and analytic subordination properties of the free additive convolution, allow us to derive an explicit formula for the derivative of the characteristic function; (2) a local law for two-point product functions of resolvents is derived using a partial randomness decomposition of the Haar measure. We also prove the corresponding results for orthogonal conjugations.
The problem of inverse statistics (statistics of distances for which the signal fluctuations are larger than a certain threshold) in differentiable signals with power law spectrum, $E(k) sim k^{-alpha}$, $3 le alpha < 5$, is discussed. We show that f or these signals, with random phases, exit-distance moments follow a bi-fractal distribution. We also investigate two dimensional turbulent flows in the direct cascade regime, which display a more complex behavior. We give numerical evidences that the inverse statistics of 2d turbulent flows is described by a multi-fractal probability distribution, i.e. the statistics of laminar events is not simply captured by the exponent $alpha$ characterizing the spectrum.
We consider a family of singular maps as an example of a simple model of dynamical systems exhibiting the property of robust chaos on a well defined range of parameters. Critical boundaries separating the region of robust chaos from the region where stable fixed points exist are calculated on the parameter space of the system. It is shown that the transitions to robust chaos in these systems occur either through the routes of type-I or type-III intermittency and the critical boundaries for each type of transition have been determined on the phase diagram of the system. The simplicity of these singular maps and the robustness of their chaotic dynamics make them useful ingredients in the construction of models and in applications that require reliable operation under chaos.
Two deterministic models for Brownian motion are investigated by means of numerical simulations and kinetic theory arguments. The first model consists of a heavy hard disk immersed in a rarefied gas of smaller and lighter hard disks acting as a therm al bath. The second is the same except for the shape of the particles, which is now square. The basic difference of these two systems lies in the interaction: hard core elastic collisions make the dynamics of the disks chaotic whereas that of squares is not. Remarkably, this difference is not reflected in the transport properties of the two systems: simulations show that the diffusion coefficients, velocity correlations and response functions of the heavy impurity are in agreement with kinetic theory for both the chaotic and the non-chaotic model. The relaxation to equilibrium, however, is very sensitive to the kind of interaction. These observations are used to reconsider and discuss some issues connected to chaos, statistical mechanics and diffusion.
The finest state space resolution that can be achieved in a physical dynamical system is limited by the presence of noise. In the weak-noise approximation the neighborhoods of deterministic periodic orbits can be computed as distributions stationary under the action of a local Fokker-Planck operator and its adjoint. We derive explicit formulae for widths of these distributions in the case of chaotic dynamics, when the periodic orbits are hyperbolic. The resulting neighborhoods form a basis for functions on the attractor. The global stationary distribution, needed for calculation of long-time expectation values of observables, can be expressed in this basis.
