Gauge theories living on stacks of D7-branes are holographically related to IIB gravitational backgrounds with a varying axion-dilaton field (F-theory). The axion-dilaton field is generated by D7, O7 and D-instanton sources and can be written in terms of the chiral correlators of the eight dimensional gauge theory living on the D7-branes. Using localization techniques, we prove that the same correlators determine the gauge coupling of the four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theories living on the elementary D3-brane which probes the F-theory geometries.

We study SYM gauge theories living on ALE spaces. Using localization formulae we compute the prepotential (and its gravitational corrections) for SU(N) supersymmetric ${cal N}=2, 2^*$ gauge theories on ALE spaces of the $A_n$ type. Furthermore we d erive the Poincar{e} polynomial describing the homologies of the corresponding moduli spaces of self-dual gauge connections. From these results we extract the ${cal N}=4$ partition function which is a modular form in agreement with the expectations of $SL(2,Z)$ duality.

In this talk I review some recent results concerning multi-instanton calculus in supersymmetric field theories. More in detail, I will show how these computations can be efficiently performed using the formalism of topological field theories.
In this paper we compute gaugino and scalar condensates in N=1 supersymmetric gauge theories with and without massive adjoint matter, using localization formulae over the multi--instanton moduli space. Furthermore we compute the chiral ring relations among the correlators of the $N=1^*$ theory and check this result against the multi-instanton computation finding agreement.
We perform a systematic analysis of flow-like solutions in theories of Einstein gravity coupled to multiple scalar fields, which arise as holographic RG flows as well as in the context of cosmological solutions driven by scalars. We use the first ord er formalism and the superpotential formulation to classify solutions close to generic extrema of the scalar potential, and close to bounces, where the flow is inverted in some or all directions and the superpotential becomes multi-valued. Although the superpotential formulation contains a large redundancy, we show how this can be completely lift by suitable regularity conditions. We place the first order formalism in the context of Hamilton-Jacobi theory, where we discuss the possibility of non-gradient flows and their connection to non-separable solutions of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. We argue that non-gradient flows may be useful in the presence of global symmetries in the scalar sector.
We clarify certain aspects of instanton operators in five-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories. In particular, we show how, in the pointlike limit, they become supersymmetric and provide the natural bridge with the instantonic states contributin g to the index as well as with the zero mode counting leading to broken current multiplets.
