The atomic structure and physical properties of few-layered <111> oriented diamond nanocrystals (diamanes), covered by hydrogen atoms from both sides are studied using electronic band structure calculations. It was shown that energy stability linear increases upon increasing of the thickness of proposed structures. All 2D carbon films display direct dielectric band gaps with nonlinear quantum confinement response upon the thickness. Elastic properties of diamanes reveal complex dependence upon increasing of the number of <111> layers. All theoretical results were compared with available experimental data.

We investigated the influence of thickness reduction on the transport properties of graphite microflakes. Using oxygen plasma etching we decreased the thickness of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) microflakes from $sim 100$~nm to $sim 20$~nm systematically. Keeping current and voltage electrodes intact, the electrical resistance $R(T)$, the magnetoresistance (MR) and Raman spectra were measured in every individual sample and after each etching step of a few nm. The results show that $R(T)$ and MR can increase or decrease with the sample thickness in a non-systematic way. The results indicate that HOPG samples are inhomogeneous materials, in agreement with scanning transmission electron microscopy images and X-ray diffraction data. Our results further indicate that the quantum oscillations in the MR are not an intrinsic property of the ideal graphite structure but their origin is related to internal conducting interfaces.
We have used oxygen ions irradiation to generate controlled structural disorder in thin manganite films. Conductive atomic force microscopy CAFM), transport and magnetic measurements were performed to analyze the influence of the implantation process in the physical properties of the films. CAFM images show regions with different conductivity values, probably due to the random distribution of point defect or inhomogeneous changes of the local Mn3+/4+ ratio to reduce lattice strains of the irradiated areas. The transport and magnetic properties of these systems are interpreted in this context. Metal-insulator transition can be described in the frame of a percolative model. Disorder increases the distance between conducting regions, lowering the observed TMI. Point defect disorder increases localization of the carriers due to increased disorder and locally enhanced strain field. Remarkably, even with the inhomogeneous nature of the samples, no sign of low field magnetoresistance was found. Point defect disorder decreases the system magnetization but doesn t seem to change the magnetic transition temperature. As a consequence, an important decoupling between the magnetic and the metal-insulator transition is found for ion irradiated films as opposed to the classical double exchange model scenario.
Over the past thirty years, it has been consistently observed that surface engineering of colloidal nanocrystals (NC) is key to their performance parameters. In the case of lead chalcogenide NCs, for example, replacing thiols with halide anion surfac e termination has been shown to increase power conversion efficiency in NC-based solar cells. To gain insight into the origins of these improvements, we perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) on experimentally-relevant sized lead sulfide (PbS) NCs constructed with thiol or Cl, Br, and I anion surfaces. The surface of both the thiol- and halide-terminated NCs exhibit low and high-energy phonon modes with large thermal displacements not present in bulk PbS; however, halide anion surface termination reduces the overlap of the electronic wavefunctions with these vibration modes. These findings suggest that electron-phonon interactions will be reduced in the halide terminated NCs, a conclusion that is supported by analyzing the time-dependent evolution of the electronic energies and wavefunctions extracted from the AIMD. This work explains why electron-phonon interactions are crucial to charge carrier dynamics in NCs and how surface engineering can be applied to systematically control their electronic and phononic properties. Furthermore, we propose that the computationally efficient approach of gauging electron-phonon interaction implemented here can be used to guide the design of application-specific surface terminations for arbitrary nanomaterials.

We have explored the influence of deposition pressure and temperature on the growth of BiFeO3 thin films by pulsed laser deposition onto (001)-oriented SrTiO3 substrates. Single-phase BiFeO3 films are obtained in a region close to 10-2 mbar and 580C. In non-optimal conditions, X-ray diffraction reveals the presence of Fe oxides or of Bi2O3. We address the influence of these parasitic phases on the magnetic and electrical properties of the films and show that films with Fe2O3 systematically exhibit a ferromagnetic behaviour, while single-phase films have a low bulk-like magnetic moment. Conductive-tip atomic force microscopy mappings also indicate that Bi2O3 conductive outgrowths create shortcuts through the BiFeO3 films, thus preventing their practical use as ferroelectric elements in functional heterostructures.
The negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy (NV-) center in diamond has realized new frontiers in quantum technology. Here, the centers optical and spin resonances are observed under hydrostatic pressures up to 60 GPa. Our observations motivate powerful new techniques to measure pressure and image high pressure magnetic and electric phenomena. Our observations further reveal a fundamental inadequacy of the current model of the center and provide new insight into its electronic structure.
