An accurate and easily extendable method to deal with lattice dynamics of solids is offered. It is based on first-principles molecular dynamics simulations and provides a consistent way to extract the best possible harmonic - or higher order - potential energy surface at finite temperatures. It is designed to work even for strongly anharmonic systems where the traditional quasiharmonic approximation fails. The accuracy and convergence of the method are controlled in a straightforward way. Excellent agreement of the calculated phonon dispersion relations at finite temperature with experimental results for bcc Li and bcc Zr is demonstrated.

We investigate the harmonic and anharmonic contributions to the phonon spectrum of lead telluride, and perform a complete characterization of how the anharmonic effects dominate the phonons in PbTe as temperature increases. This effect is the stronge st factor in the favorable thermoelectric properties of PbTe: an optical-acoustic phonon band crossing reduces the speed of sound and the intrinsic thermal conductivity. We present the detailed temperature dependence of the dispersion relation and compare our calculated neutron scattering cross section with recent experimental measurements. We analyze the thermal resistivitys variation with temperature and clarify misconceptions about existing experimental literature. This quantitative prediction opens the way to phonon phase space engineering, to tailor the lifetimes of crucial heat carrying phonons.

Nonequilibrium electron dynamics in solids is an important subject from both fundamental and technological points of view. The recent development of laser technology has enabled us to study ultrafast electron dynamics in the time domain. First-princi ples calculation is a powerful tool for analyzing such complex electron dynamics and clarifying the physics behind the experimental observation. In this article, we review the recent development of the first-principles calculation for light-induced electron dynamics in solids by revising its application to recent attosecond experiments. The electron dynamics calculations offer an accurate description of static and transient optical properties of solids and provide physics insight into light-induced electron dynamics. Furthermore, the microscopic decomposition of transient properties of nonequilibrium systems has been developed to extract microscopic information from the simulation results. The first-principles analysis opened a novel path to analyze the nonequilibrium electron dynamics in matter and to provide the fundamental understanding complementarily with the sophisticated experimental technique.
We present a vibrational dynamical mean-field theory (VDMFT) of the dynamics of atoms in solids with anharmonic interactions. Like other flavors of DMFT, VDMFT maps the dynamics of a periodic anharmonic lattice of atoms onto those of a self-consisten tly defined impurity problem with local anharmonicity and coupling to a bath of harmonic oscillators. VDMFT is exact in the harmonic and molecular limits, nonperturbative, systematically improvable through its clusters extensions, and usable with classical or quantum impurity solvers, depending on the importance of nuclear quantum effects. When tested on models of anharmonic optical and acoustic phonons, we find that classical VDMFT gives good agreement with classical molecular dynamics, including the temperature dependence of phonon frequencies and lifetimes. Using a quantum impurity solver, signatures of nuclear quantum effects are observed at low temperatures.
We present a computationally efficient general first-principles based method for spin-lattice simulations for solids. Our method is based on a combination of atomistic spin dynamics and molecular dynamics, expressed through a spin-lattice Hamiltonian where the bilinear magnetic term is expanded to second order in displacement, and all parameters are computed using density functional theory. The effect of first-order spin-lattice coupling on the magnon and phonon dispersion in bcc Fe is reported as an example, and is seen to be in good agreement with previous simulations performed with an empirical potential approach. In addition, we also illustrate the abilities of our method on a more conceptual level, by exploring dissipation-free spin and lattice motion in small magnetic clusters (a dimer, trimer and quadmer). Our method opens the door for quantitative description and understanding of the microscopic origin of many fundamental phenomena of contemporary interest, such as ultrafast demagnetization, magnetocalorics, and spincaloritronics.

Chemically and mechanically exfoliated MoS$_2$ single-layer samples have substantially different properties. While mechanically exfoliated single-layers are mono-phase (1H polytype with Mo in trigonal prismatic coordination), the chemically exfoliate d samples show coexistence of three different phases, 1H, 1T (Mo in octahedral coordination) and 1T$^{}$ (a distorted $2times 1$ 1T-superstructure). By using first-principles calculations, we investigate the energetics and the dynamical stability of the three phases. We show that the 1H phase is the most stable one, while the metallic 1T phase, strongly unstable, undergoes a phase transition towards a metastable and insulating 1T$^{}$ structure composed of separated zig-zag chains. We calculate electronic structure, phonon dispersion, Raman frequencies and intensities for the 1T$^{}$ structure. We provide a microscopical description of the J$_1$, J$_2$ and J$_3$ Raman features first detected more then $20$ years ago, but unexplained up to now. Finally, we show that H adsorbates, that are naturally present at the end of the chemical exfoliation process, stabilize the 1T$^{prime}$ over the 1H one.
