The master equation for the state of an open quantum system can be unravelled into stochastic trajectories described by a stochastic master equation. Such stochastic differential equations can be interpreted as an update formula for the system state conditioned on results obtained from monitoring the bath. So far only one parameterization (mathematical representation) for arbitrary diffusive unravellings (quantum trajectories arising from monitorings with Gaussian white noise) of a system described by a master equation with $L$ Lindblad terms has been found [H. M. Wiseman and A. C. Doherty, Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 94}, 070405 (2005)]. This parameterization, which we call the U-rep, parameterizes diffusive unravellings by $L^2+2L$ real numbers, arranged in a matrix ${sf U}$ subject to three constraints. In this paper we investigate alternative parameterizations of diffusive measurements. We find, rather surprisingly, the description of diffusive unravellings can be unified by a single equation for a non-square complex matrix if one is willing to allow for some redundancy by lifting the number of real parameters necessary from $L^2+2L$ to $3L^2+L$. We call this parameterization the M-rep. Both the M-rep and U-rep lack a physical picture of what the measurement should look like. We thus propose another parameterization, the B-rep, that details how the measurement is implemented in terms of beam-splitters, phase shifters, and homodyne detectors. Relations between the different representations are derived.

The technologies of quantum information and quantum control are rapidly improving, but full exploitation of their capabilities requires complete characterization and assessment of processes that occur within quantum devices. We present a method for c haracterizing, with arbitrarily high accuracy, any quantum optical process. Our protocol recovers complete knowledge of the process by studying, via homodyne tomography, its effect on a set of coherent states, i.e. classical fields produced by common laser sources. We demonstrate the capability of our protocol by evaluating and experimentally verifying the effect of a test process on squeezed vacuum.

Feedback control engineers have been interested in MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) extensions of SISO (single-input single-output) results of various kinds due to its rich mathematical structure and practical applications. An outstanding proble m in quantum feedback control is the extension of the SISO theory of Markovian feedback by Wiseman and Milburn [Phys. Rev. Lett. {bf 70}, 548 (1993)] to multiple inputs and multiple outputs. Here we generalize the SISO homodyne-mediated feedback theory to allow for multiple inputs, multiple outputs, and emph{arbitrary} diffusive quantum measurements. We thus obtain a MIMO framework which resembles the SISO theory and whose additional mathematical structure is highlighted by the extensive use of vector-operator algebra.
Measurement incompatibility describes two or more quantum measurements whose expected joint outcome on a given system cannot be defined. This purely non-classical phenomenon provides a necessary ingredient in many quantum information tasks such viola ting a Bell Inequality or nonlocally steering part of an entangled state. In this paper, we characterize incompatibility in terms of programmable measurement devices and the general notion of quantum programmability. This refers to the temporal freedom a user has in issuing programs to a quantum device. For devices with a classical control and classical output, measurement incompatibility emerges as the essential quantum resource embodied in their functioning. Based on the processing of programmable measurement devices, we construct a quantum resource theory of incompatibility. A complete set of convertibility conditions for programmable devices is derived based on quantum state discrimination with post-measurement information.

Quantum satisfiability is a constraint satisfaction problem that generalizes classical boolean satisfiability. In the quantum k-SAT problem, each constraint is specified by a k-local projector and is satisfied by any state in its nullspace. Bravyi sh owed that quantum 2-SAT can be solved efficiently on a classical computer and that quantum k-SAT with k greater than or equal to 4 is QMA1-complete. Quantum 3-SAT was known to be contained in QMA1, but its computational hardness was unknown until now. We prove that quantum 3-SAT is QMA1-hard, and therefore complete for this complexity class.
We develop the protocol for structural restoring of multi-quantum coherence matrices of the multi-qubit quantum state transferred from the sender to the receiver along a spin-1/2 chain. We also propose a protocol for constructing such 0-order coheren ce matrix that can be perfectly transferred in this process. The restoring protocol is based on the specially constructed unitary transformation of the extended receiver.{This transformation for a given length parameters of the chain is universally optimal in the sense that ones constructed it can be applied to optimally restore any higher-order coherence matrices.
