We present the discovery and follow-up observations of a broad-line type-Ic supernova (SN), PTF 10bzf (SN 2010ah), detected by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) on 2010 February 23. The SN distance is cong 218 Mpc, greater than GRB 980425 / SN 1998bw and GRB 060218 / SN 2006aj, but smaller than the other SNe firmly associated with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We conducted a multi-wavelength follow-up campaign with Palomar-48 inch, Palomar 60-inch, Gemini-N, Keck, Wise, Swift, the Allen Telescope Array, CARMA, WSRT, and EVLA. Here we compare the properties of PTF 10bzf with those of SN 1998bw and other broad-line SNe. The optical luminosity and spectral properties of PTF 10bzf suggest that this SN is intermediate, in kinetic energy and amount of 56Ni, between non GRB-associated SNe like 2002ap or 1997ef, and GRB-associated SNe like 1998bw. No X-ray or radio counterpart to PTF 10bzf was detected. X-ray upper-limits allow us to exclude the presence of an underlying X-ray afterglow as luminous as that of other SN-associated GRBs like GRB 030329 or GRB 031203. Early-time radio upper-limits do not show evidence for mildly-relativistic ejecta. Late-time radio upper-limits rule out the presence of an underlying off-axis GRB, with energy and wind density similar to the SN-associated GRB 030329 and GRB 031203. Finally, by performing a search for a GRB in the time window and at the position of PTF 10bzf, we find that no GRB in the IPN catalog could be associated with this SN.

We present optical and ultraviolet photometry, and low resolution optical spectroscopy of the broad-line type Ic supernova SN 2014ad in the galaxy PGC 37625 (Mrk 1309), covering the evolution of the supernova during $-$5 to +87 d with respect to the date of maximum in $B$-band. A late phase spectrum obtained at +340 d is also presented. With an absolute $V$ band magnitude at peak of $M_{V}$ = $-$18.86 $pm$ 0.23 mag, SN 2014ad is fainter than Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) associated supernovae, and brighter than most of the normal and broad-line type Ic supernovae without an associated GRB. The spectral evolution indicates the expansion velocity of the ejecta, as measured using the Si,{sc ii} line, to be as high as $sim$ 33500 km,s$^{-1}$ around maximum, while during the post-maximum phase it settles down at $sim$ 15000 km,s$^{-1}$. The expansion velocity of SN 2014ad is higher than all other well observed broad-line type Ic supernovae except the GRB associated SN 2010bh. The explosion parameters, determined by applying the Arnetts analytical light curve model to the observed bolometric light curve, indicate that it was an energetic explosion with a kinetic energy of $sim$ (1 $pm$ 0.3)$times$10$^{52}$ ergs, a total ejected mass of $sim$ (3.3 $pm$ 0.8) M$_odot$, and $sim$ 0.24 M$_odot$ of $^{56}$Ni was synthesized in the explosion. The metallicity of the host galaxy near the supernova region is estimated to be $sim$ 0.5 Z$_odot$.
We study 34 Type Ic supernovae that have broad spectral features (SNe Ic-BL). We obtained our photometric data with the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and its continuation, the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF). This is the first large, homogeneous sample of SNe Ic-BL from an untargeted survey. Furthermore, given the high cadence of (i)PTF, most of these SNe were discovered soon after explosion. We present K-corrected $Bgriz$ light curves of these SNe, obtained through photometry on template-subtracted images. We analyzed the shape of the $r$-band light curves, finding a correlation between the decline parameter $Delta m_{15}$ and the rise parameter $Delta m_{-10}$. We studied the SN colors and, based on $g-r$, we estimated the host-galaxy extinction. Peak $r$-band absolute magnitudes have an average of $-18.6pm0.5$ mag. We fit each $r$-band light curve with that of SN 1998bw (scaled and stretched) to derive the explosion epochs. We computed the bolometric light curves using bolometric corrections, $r$-band data, and $g-r$ colors. Expansion velocities from Fe II were obtained by fitting spectral templates of SNe Ic. Bolometric light curves and velocities at peak were fitted using the semianalytic Arnett model to estimate ejecta mass $M_{rm ej}$, explosion energy $E_{K}$ and $^{56}$Ni mass $M(^{56}$Ni). We find average values of $M_{rm ej} = 4pm3~{rm M}_{odot}$, $E_{K} = (7pm6) times 10^{51}~$erg, and $M(^{56}$Ni) $= 0.31pm0.16~{rm M}_{odot}$. We also estimated the degree of $^{56}$Ni mixing using scaling relations derived from hydrodynamical models and we find that all the SNe are strongly mixed. The derived explosion parameters imply that at least 21% of the progenitors of SNe Ic-BL are compatible with massive ($>28~{rm M}_{odot}$), possibly single stars, whereas at least 64% might come from less massive stars in close binary systems.
We report the discovery of two new halo velocity groups (Cancer groups A and B) traced by 8 distant RR Lyrae stars and observed by the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) survey at R.A.~129 deg, Dec~20 deg (l~205 deg, b~32 deg). Located at 92 kpc from th e Galactic center (86 kpc from the Sun), these are some of the most distant substructures in the Galactic halo known to date. Follow-up spectroscopic observations with the Palomar Observatory 5.1-m Hale telescope and W. M. Keck Observatory 10-m Keck I telescope indicate that the two groups are moving away from the Galaxy at v_{gsr} = 78.0+-5.6 km/s (Cancer group A) and v_{gsr} = 16.3+-7.1 km/s (Cancer group B). The groups have velocity dispersions of sigma_{v_{gsr}}=12.4+-5.0 km/s and sigma_{v_{gsr}}=14.9+-6.2 km/s, and are spatially extended (about several kpc) making it very unlikely that they are bound systems, and are more likely to be debris of tidally disrupted dwarf galaxies or globular clusters. Both groups are metal-poor (median metallicities of [Fe/H] = -1.6 dex and [Fe/H] =-2.1 dex), and have a somewhat uncertain (due to small sample size) metallicity dispersion of ~0.4 dex, suggesting dwarf galaxies as progenitors. Two additional RR Lyrae stars with velocities consistent with those of the Cancer groups have been observed ~25 deg east, suggesting possible extension of the groups in that direction.
Type Ic supernovae represent the explosions of the most stripped massive stars, but their progenitors and explosion mechanisms remain unclear. Larger samples of observed supernovae can help characterize the population of these transients. We present an analysis of 44 spectroscopically normal Type Ic supernovae, with focus on the light curves. The photometric data were obtained over 7 years with the Palomar Transient Factory (PTF) and its continuation, the intermediate Palomar Transient Factory (iPTF). This is the first homogeneous and large sample of SNe Ic from an untargeted survey, and we aim to estimate explosion parameters for the sample. We present K-corrected Bgriz light curves of these SNe, obtained through photometry on template-subtracted images. We performed an analysis on the shape of the $r$-band light curves and confirmed the correlation between the rise parameter Delta m_{-10} and the decline parameter Delta m_{15}. Peak r-band absolute magnitudes have an average of -17.71 +- 0.85 mag. To derive the explosion epochs, we fit the r-band lightcurves to a template derived from a well-sampled light curve. We computed the bolometric light curves using r and g band data, g-r colors and bolometric corrections. Bolometric light curves and Fe II lambda 5169 velocities at peak were used to fit to the Arnett semianalytic model in order to estimate the ejecta mass M_{ej}, the explosion energy E_{K} and the mass of radioactive nickel (M(56) Ni) for each SN. Including 41 SNe, we find average values of <M_{ej}>=4.50 +-0.79 msun, <E_{K}>=1.79 +- 0.29 x10^{51} erg, and <M(56)Ni)>= 0.19 +- 0.03 msun. The explosion-parameter distributions are comparable to those available in the literature, but our large sample also includes some transients with narrow and very broad light curves leading to more extreme ejecta masses values.
The Palomar Transient Factory proves to be a prolific source of Magnetic Cataclysmic Variables, selected by their distinctive photometric variability, and followed up spectroscopically. Here, we present six new candidate systems, together with preliminary photometric periods and spectra.
