We present a general scheme for treating particle beams as many particle systems. This includes the full counting statistics and the requirements of Bose/Fermi symmetry. In the stationary limit, i.e., for longer and longer beams, the total particle number diverges, and a description in Fock space is no longer possible. We therefore extend the formalism to include stationary beams. These beams exhibit a well-defined local counting statistics, by which we mean the full counting statistics of all clicks falling into any given finite interval. We treat in detail a model of a source, creating particles in a fixed state, which then evolve under the free time evolution, and we determine the resulting stationary beam in the far field. In comparison to the one-particle picture we obtain a correction due to Bose/Fermi statistics, which depends on the emission rate. We also consider plane waves as stationary many particle states, and determine the distribution of intervals between successive clicks in such a beam.

A complete characterization of quantum fluctuations in many-body systems is accessible through the full counting statistics. We present an exact computation of statistical properties of light in a basic model of light-matter interaction: a multimode photonic field coupled to a single two-level emitter. We mostly consider an initial coherent state in a given mode and demonstrate how the original Poissonian statistics gets modified because of quantum many-body scattering effects leading to non-Poissonian distributions. We argue that measuring this statistics in a simple quantum optical setup provides an insight into many-body correlation effects with photons.
We study quantum walks of many non-interacting particles on a beam splitter array, as a paradigmatic testing ground for the competition of single- and many-particle interference in a multi-mode system. We derive a general expression for multi-mode pa rticle-number correlation functions, valid for bosons and fermions, and infer pronounced signatures of many-particle interferences in the counting statistics.
We study the position distribution of a single active Brownian particle (ABP) on the plane. We show that this distribution has a compact support, the boundary of which is an expanding circle. We focus on a short-time regime and employ the optimal flu ctuation method (OFM) to study large deviations of the particle position coordinates $x$ and $y$. We determine the optimal paths of the ABP, conditioned on reaching specified values of $x$ and $y$, and the large deviation functions of the marginal distributions of $x$, and of $y$. These marginal distributions match continuously with near tails of the $x$ and $y$ distributions of typical fluctuations, studied earlier. We also calculate the large deviation function of the joint $x$ and $y$ distribution $P(x,y,t)$ in a vicinity of a special zero-noise point, and show that $ln P(x,y,t)$ has a nontrivial self-similar structure as a function of $x$, $y$ and $t$. The joint distribution vanishes extremely fast at the expanding circle, exhibiting an essential singularity there. This singularity is inherited by the marginal $x$- and $y$-distributions. We argue that this fingerprint of the short-time dynamics remains there at all times.

We develop a method for calculation of charge transfer statistics of persistent current in nanostructures in terms of the cumulant generating function (CGF) of transferred charge. We consider a simply connected one-dimensional system (a wire) and dev elop a procedure for the calculation of the CGF of persistent currents when the wire is closed into a ring via a weak link. For the non-interacting system we derive a general formula in terms of the two-particle Greens functions. We show that, contrary to the conventional tunneling contacts, the resulting cumulant generating function has a doubled periodicity as a function of the counting field. We apply our general formula to short tight-binding chains and show that the resulting CGF perfectly reproduces the known evidence for the persistent current. Its second cumulant turns out to be maximal at the switching points and vanishes identically at zero temperature. Furthermore, we apply our formalism for a computation of the charge transfer statistics of genuinely interacting systems. First we consider a ring with an embedded Anderson impurity and employing a self-energy approximation find an overall suppression of persistent current as well as of its noise. Finally, we compute the charge transfer statistics of a double quantum dot system in the deep Kondo limit using an exact analytical solution of the model at the Toulouse point. We analyze the behaviour of the resulting cumulants and compare them with those of a noninteracting double quantum dot system and find several pronounced differences, which can be traced back to interaction effects.
