We present new broad-band optical images of some merging Seyfert galaxies that were earlier considered to be non-interacting objects. On our deep images obtained at the Russian 6-m telescope we have detected elongated tidal envelopes belonging to satellites debris with a surface R-band brightness about 25-26.5 mag/arcsec^2. These structures are invisible in Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) pictures because of their photometric limit. We found that 35 per cent of the sample of isolated galaxies has undergone merging during the last 0.5-1 Gyr. Our results suggest that statistic studies based on popular imaging surveys (SDSS or Second Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (POSS-II)) can lead to underestimation of the fraction of minor mergers among galaxies with active nuclei (AGN). This fact impacts on statistics and must be taken into consideration when finding connection between minor/major merging or interactions and nucleus activity.

$renewcommand{Re}{mathbb{R}}$Given a set $P$ of $n$ points in $Re^d$, consider the problem of computing $k$ subsets of $P$ that form clusters that are well-separated from each other, and each of them is large (cardinality wise). We provide tight uppe r and lower bounds, and corresponding algorithms, on the quality of separation, and the size of the clusters that can be computed, as a function of $n,d,k,s$, and $Phi$, where $s$ is the desired separation, and $Phi$ is the spread of the point set $P$.
We use the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) hydrodynamical simulations to investigate the effects of self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) on galaxies as they fall into clusters. We find that SIDM galaxies follow similar orbits to their Cold Dark Matter (CDM) c ounterparts, but end up with ${sim}$25 per cent less mass by the present day. One in three SIDM galaxies are entirely disrupted, compared to one in five CDM galaxies. However, the excess stripping will be harder to observe than suggested by previous DM-only simulations because the most stripped galaxies form cores and also lose stars: the most discriminating objects become unobservable. The best test will be to measure the stellar-to-halo mass relation (SHMR) for galaxies with stellar mass $10^{10-11},mathrm{M}_{odot}$. This is 8 times higher in a cluster than in the field for a CDM universe, but 13 times higher for an SIDM universe. Given intrinsic scatter in the SHMR, these models could be distinguished with noise-free galaxy-galaxy strong lensing of ${sim}32$ cluster galaxies.
Centrally located diffuse radio emission has been observed in both merging and non-merging galaxy clusters. Depending on their morphology and size, we distinguish between giant radio haloes, which occur predominantly in merging clusters, and mini hal oes, which are found in non-merging, cool-core clusters. Low-frequency sensitive observations are required to assess whether the emission discovered in these few cases is common in galaxy clusters or not. With this aim, we carried out a campaign of observations with the LOw Frequency ARay (LOFAR) in the frequency range 120 - 168 MHz of nine massive clusters selected from the textit{Planck} SZ catalogue, which had no sign of major mergers. In this paper, we discuss the results of the observations that have led to the largest cluster sample studied within the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey, and we present Chandra X-ray data used to investigate the dynamical state of the clusters, verifying that the clusters are currently not undergoing major mergers, and to search for traces of minor or off-axis mergers. We discover large-scale steep-spectrum emission around mini haloes in the cool-core clusters PSZ1G139 and RXJ1720, which is not observed around the mini halo in the non-cool-core cluster A1413. We also discover a new 570 kpc-halo in the non-cool-core cluster RXCJ0142. We derived new upper limits to the radio power for clusters in which no diffuse radio emission was found, and we discuss the implication of our results to constrain the cosmic-ray energy budget in the ICM. We conclude that radio emission in non-merging massive clusters is not common at the sensitivity level reached by our observations and that no clear connection with the cluster dynamical state is observed. Our results might indicate that the sloshing of a dense cool core could trigger particle acceleration on larger scales and generate steep-spectrum radio emission.
We revisit the relation between H2O maser detection rate and nuclear obscuration for a sample of 114 Seyfert galaxies, drawn from the CfA, 12um and IRAS F25/F60 catalogs. These sources have mid-infrared spectra from the Spitzer Space Telescope and th ey are searched for X-ray and [O III], 5007Angstrom fluxes from the literature. We use the strength of the [O IV], 25.9um emission line as tracer for the intrinsic AGN strength. After normalization by [O IV] the observed X-ray flux provides information about X-ray absorption. The distribution of X-ray / [O IV] flux ratios is significantly different for masers and non-masers: The maser detected Seyfert-2s (Sy 1.8-2.0) populate a distinct X-ray / [O IV] range which is, on average, about a factor four lower than the range of Seyfert-2 non-masers and about a factor of ten lower than the range of Seyfert-1s (Sy 1.0-1.5). Non-masers are almost equally distributed over the entire X-ray / [O IV] range. This provides evidence that high nuclear obscuration plays a crucial role for the probability of maser detection. Furthermore, after normalization with [O IV], we find a similar but weaker trend for the distribution of the maser detection rate with the absorption of the 7um dust continuum. This suggests that the obscuration of the 7 um continuum occurs on larger spatial scales than that of the X-rays. Hence, in the AGN unified model, at moderate deviation from edge-on, the 7um dust absorption may occur without proportionate X-ray absorption. The absorption of [O III] appears unrelated to maser detections. The failure to detect masers in obscured AGN is most likely due to insufficient observational sensitivity.
We present a deep study of the average hard X-ray spectra of Seyfert galaxies. We analyzed all public INTEGRAL IBIS/ISGRI data available on all the 165 Seyfert galaxies detected at z<0.2. Our final sample consists of 44 Seyfert 1s, 29 Seyfert 1.5s, 7 8 Seyfert 2s, and 14 Narrow Line Seyfert 1s. We derived the average hard X-ray spectrum of each subsample in the 17-250keV energy range. All classes of Seyfert galaxies show on average the same nuclear continuum, as foreseen by the zeroth order unified model, with a cut-off energy of Ec>200keV, and a photon index of Gamma ~1.8. Compton-thin Seyfert 2s show a reflection component stronger than Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 1.5s. Most of this reflection is due to mildly obscured (10^23 cm^-2 < NH < 10^24 cm^-2) Seyfert 2s, which have a significantly stronger reflection component (R=2.2^{+4.5}_{-1.1}) than Seyfert 1s (R<=0.4), Seyfert 1.5s (R<= 0.4) and lightly obscured (NH < 10^23 cm^-2) Seyfert 2s (R<=0.5). This cannot be explained easily by the unified model. The absorber/reflector in mildly obscured Seyfert 2s might cover a large fraction of the X-ray source, and have clumps of Compton-thick material. The large reflection found in the spectrum of mildly obscured Seyfert 2s reduces the amount of Compton-thick objects needed to explain the peak of the cosmic X-ray background. Our results are consistent with the fraction of Compton-thick sources being ~10%. The spectra of Seyfert 2s with and without polarized broad lines do not show significant differences, the only difference between the two samples being the higher hard X-ray and bolometric luminosity of Seyfert 2s with polarized broad lines. The average hard X-ray spectrum of Narrow line Seyfert 1s is steeper than those of Seyfert 1s and Seyfert 1.5s, probably due to a lower energy of the cutoff.
