Nonlinear magnetic field dependence of spin polarization in high density two-dimensional electron systems

The spin polarization (P) of high-density InSb two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) has been measured using both parallel and tilted magnetic fields. P is found to exhibit a superlinear increase with the total field B. This P-B nonlinearity results in a difference in spin susceptibility between its real value Xs and Xgm ~ m*g*(m* and g* are the effective mass and g factor, respectively) as routinely used in experiments. We demonstrate that such a P-B nonlinearity originates from the linearly P-dependent g* due to the exchange coupling of electrons rather than from the electron correlation as predicted for the low-density 2DES.

We have studied the spin dynamics of a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in a GaAs/Al_{0.3}Ga_{0.7}As single quantum well by time-resolved Faraday rotation and time-resolved Kerr rotation in dependence on the initial degree of spin polari zation, P, of the electrons. By increasing the initial spin polarization from the low-P regime to a significant P of several percent, we find that the spin dephasing time, $T_2^ast$, increases from about 20 ps to 200 ps; Moreover, $T_2^ast$ increases with temperature at small spin polarization but decreases with temperature at large spin polarization. All these features are in good agreement with theoretical predictions by Weng and Wu [Phys. Rev. B {bf 68}, 075312 (2003)]. Measurements as a function of spin polarization at fixed electron density are performed to further confirm the theory. A fully microscopic calculation is performed by setting up and numerically solving the kinetic spin Bloch equations, including the Dyakonov-Perel and the Bir-Aronov-Pikus mechanisms, with {em all} the scattering explicitly included. We reproduce all principal features of the experiments, i.e., a dramatic decrease of spin dephasing with increasing $P$ and the temperature dependences at different spin polarizations.

We consider the non-analytic terms in the spin susceptibility arising as a result of rescaterring of pairs of quasiparticles. We emphasize the importance of rescattering in the Cooper channel for the analysis of the temperature dependences in the two -dimensional electron systems in the ballistic regime. In the calculation of the linear in $T$ term we use angular harmonics in the Cooper channel, because for each harmonic the interaction amplitude is renormalized independently. We observe, that as a consequence of strong renormalizations in the Cooper ladder, the temperature derivative of the spin susceptibility may change its sign at low temperatures.
We argue that the magnetic susceptibility data, Refs. 1-3, for the low-density two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based electron gas indicate that magnetically active electrons are localised in spin-droplets. The droplets exist in both the insulating and m etallic phases, and interact ferromagnetically, forming an effective 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet. Comparing the data with known analytical and numerical results for a 2D Heisenberg ferromagnet, we determine that JS^2 approx 0.6K, where S is the spin of the droplet and J is the ferromagnetic exchange constant between droplets. We further argue that most likely S=1 with four electrons occupying each droplet on average. We discuss the dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the specific heat on the external magnetic field, which follows from the model, and hence we suggest further experimental tests of the model.
Frustrated magnets in high magnetic field have a long history of offering beautiful surprises to the patient investigator. Here we present the results of extensive classical Monte Carlo simulations of a variety of models of two dimensional magnets in magnetic field, together with complementary spin wave analysis. Striking results include (i) a massively enhanced magnetocaloric effect in antiferromagnets bordering on ferromagnetic order, (ii) a route to an $m=1/3$ magnetization plateau on a square lattice, and (iii) a cascade of phase transitions in a simple model of AgNiO$_2$.
We study the energy spectrum and electronic properties of two-dimensional electron gas in a periodic magnetic field of zero average with a symmetry of triangular lattice. We demonstrate how the structure of electron energy bands can be changed with t he variation of the field strength, so that we can start from nearly free electron gas and then transform it continuously to a system of essentially localized chiral electron states. We find that the electrons near some minima of the effective potential are responsible for occurrence of dissipationless persistent currents creating a lattice of current contours. The topological properties of the electron energy bands are also varied with the intensity of periodic field. We calculated the topological Chern numbers of several lower energy bands as a function of the field. The corresponding Hall conductivity is nonzero and, when the Fermi level lies in the gap, it is quantized.
