Astrophysical shocks or bursts from a photoionizing source can disturb the typical collisional plasma found in galactic interstellar media or the intergalactic medium. The spectrum emitted by this plasma contains diagnostics that have been used to determine the time since the disturbing event, although this determination becomes uncertain as the elements in the plasma return to ionization equilibrium. A general solution for the equilibrium timescale for each element arises from the elegant eigenvector method of solution to the problem of a non-equilibrium plasma described by Masai (1984) and Hughes & Helfand (1985). In general the ionization evolution of an element Z in a constant electron temperature plasma is given by a coupled set of Z+1 first order differential equations. However, they can be recast as Z uncoupled first order differential equations using an eigenvector basis for the system. The solution is then Z separate exponential functions, with the time constants given by the eigenvalues of the rate matrix. The smallest of these eigenvalues gives the scale of slowest return to equilibrium independent of the initial conditions, while conversely the largest eigenvalue is the scale of the fastest change in the ion population. These results hold for an ionizing plasma, a recombining plasma, or even a plasma with random initial conditions, and will allow users of these diagnostics to determine directly if their best-fit result significantly limits the timescale since a disturbance or is so close to equilibrium as to include an arbitrarily-long time.

Weakly collisional Ar-O2 electronegative plasmas are investigated in a dc multidipole chamber. An electronegative core and an electropositive halo are observed. The density ratio of negative ions to electrons ({alpha}) in the nondrifting bulk is foun d to be 0.43. The profile of {alpha} is found using both the phase velocity of ion acoustic waves and the drift velocity of positive ions determined by laser induced fluorescence. The experiment shows that negative ions are in Boltzmann equilibrium with a temperature of 0.06 pm 0.02 eV. Double layers are not found separating the electronegative core and the electropositive halo.

The physical foundations of the dissipation of energy and the associated heating in weakly collisional plasmas are poorly understood. Here, we compare and contrast several measures that have been used to characterize energy dissipation and kinetic-sc ale conversion in plasmas by means of a suite of kinetic numerical simulations describing both magnetic reconnection and decaying plasma turbulence. We adopt three different numerical codes that can also include interparticle collisions: the fully kinetic particle-in-cell VPIC, the fully kinetic continuum Gkeyll, and the Eulerian Hybrid Vlasov-Maxwell (HVM) code. We differentiate between (i) four energy-based parameters, whose definition is related to energy transfer in a fluid description of a plasma, and (ii) four distribution function-based parameters, requiring knowledge of the particle velocity distribution function. There is an overall agreement between the dissipation measures obtained in the PIC and continuum reconnection simulations, with slight differences due to the presence/absence of secondary islands in the two simulations. There are also many qualitative similarities between the signatures in the reconnection simulations and the self-consistent current sheets that form in turbulence, although the latter exhibits significant variations compared to the reconnection results. All the parameters confirm that dissipation occurs close to regions of intense magnetic stresses, thus exhibiting local correlation. The distribution function-based measures show a broader width compared to energy-based proxies, suggesting that energy transfer is co-localized at coherent structures, but can affect the particle distribution function in wider regions. The effect of interparticle collisions on these parameters is finally discussed.
Most of our knowledge of the physical processes in distant plasmas is obtained through measurement of the radiation they produce. Here we provide an overview of the main collisional and radiative processes and examples of diagnostics relevant to the microphysical processes in the plasma. Many analyses assume a time-steady plasma with ion populations in equilibrium with the local temperature and Maxwellian distributions of particle velocities, but these assumptions are easily violated in many cases. We consider these departures from equilibrium and possible diagnostics in detail.
We report on high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy of the ultracompact X-ray binary pulsar 4U 1626-67 with Chandra/HETGS acquired in 2010, two years after the pulsar experienced a torque reversal. The well-known strong Ne and O emission lines with Keple rian profiles are shown to arise at the inner edge of the magnetically-channeled accretion disk. We exclude a photoionization model for these lines based on the absence of sharp radiative recombination continua. Instead, we show that the lines arise from a collisional plasma in the inner-disk atmosphere, with $Tsimeq 10^7$ K and $n_e sim 10^{17}$ cm^(-3). We suggest that the lines are powered by X-ray heating of the optically-thick disk inner edge at normal incidence. Comparison of the line profiles in HETGS observations from 2000, 2003, and 2010 show that the inner disk radius decreased by a factor of two after the pulsar went from spin-down to spin-up, as predicted by magnetic accretion torque theory. The inner disk is well inside the corotation radius during spin-up, and slightly beyond the corotation radius during spin-down. Based on the disk radius and accretion torque measured during steady spin-up, the pulsars X-ray luminosity is $2times 10^{36}$ erg/s, yielding a source distance of 3.5(+0.2-0.3) kpc. The mass accretion rate is an order of magnitude larger than expected from gravitational radiation reaction, possibly due to X-ray heating of the donor. The line profiles also indicate a binary inclination of 39(+20-10) degrees, consistent with a 0.02 Msun donor star. Our emission measure analysis favors a He white dwarf or a highly-evolved H-poor main sequence remnant for the donor star, rather than a C-O or O-Ne white dwarf. The measured Ne/O ratio is 0.46+-0.14 by number. In an appendix, we show how to express the emission measure of a H-depleted collisional plasma without reference to a H number density.
We assess the partition function and ionization degree of magnetized hydrogen atoms at thermodynamic equilibrium for a wide range of field intensities, $Bapprox 10^5$-$10^{12}$~G. Evaluations include fitting formulae for an arbitrary number of bindin g energies, the coupling between the internal atomic structure and the center-of-mass motion across the magnetic field, and the formation of the so-called decentered states (bound states with the electron shifted from the Coulomb well). Non-ideal gas effects are treated within the occupational probability method. We also present general mathematical expressions for the bound state correspondence between the limits of zero-field and high-field. This let us evaluate the atomic partition function in a continuous way from the Zeeman perturbative regime to very strong fields. Results are shown for conditions found in atmospheres of magnetic white dwarf stars (MWDs), with temperatures $Tapprox 5000$-$80000$~K and densities $rhoapprox 10^{-12}$-$10^{-3}$~g~cm$^3$. Our evaluations show a marked reduction of the gas ionization due to the magnetic field in the atmospheres of strong MWDs. We also found that decentered states could be present in the atmospheres of currently known hot MWDs, giving a significant contribution to the partition function in the strongest magnetized atmospheres.
