By relaxing the conventional assumption of a purely gravitational interaction between dark energy and dark matter, substantial alterations to the growth of cosmological structure can occur. In this work we focus on the homogeneous transfer of energy from a decaying form of dark energy. We present simple analytic solutions to the modified growth rates of matter fluctuations in these models, and demonstrate that neglecting physics within the dark sector may induce a significant bias in the inferred growth rate, potentially offering a false signature of modified gravity.

Recently, the Planck collaboration has released the first cosmological papers providing the highest resolution, full sky, maps of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies. In this paper we study a phenomenological model which in terpolates between the pure $Lambda$CDM model and the Dvali-Gabadadze-Porrati (DGP) braneworld model with an additional parameter $alpha$. Firstly, we calculate the distance information of Planck data which includes the shift parameter $R$, the acoustic scale $l_A$, and the photon decoupling epoch $z_ast$ in different cosmological models and find that this information is almost independent on the input models we use. Then, we compare the constraints on the free parameter $alpha$ of the DGP model from the distance information of Planck and WMAP data and find that the Planck data with high precision do not improve the constraint on $alpha$, but give the higher median value and the better limit on the current matter density fraction $Omega_m$. Then, combining the distance information of Planck measurement, baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO), type Ia supernovae (SNIa) and the prior on the current Hubble constant (HST), we obtain the tight constraint on the parameter $alpha < 0.20$ at $95%$ confidence level, which implies that the flat DGP model has been ruled out by the current cosmological data. Finally, we allow the additional parameter $alpha < 0$ in our calculations and interestingly obtain $alpha=-0.29pm0.20$ ($68%$ C.L.), which means the current data slightly favor the effective equation of state $w_{rm eff}<-1$. More importantly, the tension between constraints on $H_0$ from different observational data has been eased.
In a large class of scalar-tensor theories that are potential candidates for dark energy, a nonminimal coupling between the scalar and the photon is possible. The presence of such an interaction grants us the exciting prospect of directly observing d ark sector phenomenology in the electromagnetic spectrum. This paper investigates the behavior of one-electron atoms in this class of modified gravity models, exploring their viability as probes of deviations from general relativity in both laboratory and astrophysical settings. Building heavily on earlier studies, our main contribution is threefold: A thorough analysis finds additional fine-structure corrections previously unaccounted for, which now predict a contribution to the Lamb shift that is larger by nearly 4 orders of magnitude. In addition, they also predict a scalar-mediated photon-photon interaction, which now constrains the scalars coupling to the photon independently of the matter coupling. This was not previously possible with atomic precision tests. Our updated constraints are $log_{10}beta_m lesssim 13.4$ and $log_{10}beta_gamma lesssim 19.0$ for the matter and photon coupling, respectively, although these remain uncompetitive with bounds from other experiments. Second, we include the effects of the nuclear magnetic moment, allowing for the study of hyperfine structure and the 21 cm line, which hitherto have been unexplored in this context. Finally, we also examine how a background scalar leads to equivalence principle violations.
Two-dimensional semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) like molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) are generating significant excitement due to their unique electronic, chemical, and optical properties. Covalent chemical functionalization repre sents a critical tool for tuning the properties of TMDCs for use in many applications. However, the chemical inertness of semiconducting TMDCs has thus far hindered the robust chemical functionalization of these materials. Previous reports have required harsh chemical treatments or converting TMDCs into metallic phases prior to covalent attachment. Here, we demonstrate the direct covalent functionalization of the basal planes of unmodified semiconducting MoS2 using aryl diazonium salts without any pretreatments. Our approach preserves the semiconducting properties of MoS2, results in covalent C-S bonds, is applicable to MoS2 derived from a range of different synthesis methods, and enables a range of different functional groups to be tethered directly to the MoS2 surface. Using density functional theory calculations including van der Waals interactions and atomic-scale scanning probe microscopy studies, we demonstrate a novel reaction mechanism in which cooperative interactions enable the functionalization to propagate along the MoS2 basal plane. The flexibility of this covalent chemistry employing the diverse aryl diazonium salt family is further exploited to tether active proteins to MoS2, suggesting future biological applications and demonstrating its use as a versatile and powerful chemical platform for enhancing the utility of semiconducting TMDCs

Massive gravity provides a natural solution for the dark energy problem of cosmology and is also a candidate for resolving the dark matter problem. I demonstrate that, assuming reasonable scaling relations, massive gravity can provide for Milgroms la w of gravity (or modified Newtonian dynamics) which is known to remove the need for particle dark matter from galactic dynamics. Milgroms law comes with a characteristic acceleration, Milgroms constant, which is observationally constrained to $a_0approx1.1times10^{-10}$ m/s$^2$. In the derivation presented here, this constant arises naturally from the cosmologically required mass of gravitons like $a_0propto csqrt{Lambda}propto c H_0sqrt{3Omega_{Lambda}}$, with $Lambda$, $H_0$, and $Omega_{Lambda}$ being the cosmological constant, the Hubble constant, and the third cosmological parameter, respectively. My derivation suggests that massive gravity could be the mechanism behind both, dark matter and dark energy.
Violation of parity symmetry in the gravitational sector, which manifests into unequal left and right circular polarization states of primordial gravitational waves, represents a way to test high-energy modifications to general relativity. In this pa per we study inflation within recently proposed chiral scalar-tensor theories of gravity, that extend Chern-Simons gravity by including parity-violating operators containing first and second derivatives of the non-minimally coupled scalar (inflaton) field. Given the degeneracy between different parity-violating theories at the level of the power spectrum statistics, we make a detailed analysis of the parity violation on primordial tensor non-Gaussianity. We show, with an explicit computation, that no new contributions arise in the graviton bispectra if the couplings in the new operators are constant in a pure de Sitter phase. On the other hand, if the coupling functions are time-dependent during inflation, the tensor bispectra acquire non-vanishing contributions from the parity-breaking operators even in the exact de Sitter limit, with maximal signal in the squeezed and equilateral configurations. We also comment on the consistency relation of the three-point function of tensor modes in this class of models and discuss prospects of detecting parity-breaking signatures through Cosmic Microwave Background $B$-mode bispectra.
