We describe radio observations at 244 and 610 MHz of a sample of 20 luminous and ultra-luminous IRAS galaxies. These are a sub-set of a sample of 31 objects that have well-measured radio spectra up to at least 23 GHz. The radio spectra of these objects below 1.4 GHz show a great variety of forms and are rarely a simple power-law extrapolation of the synchrotron spectra at higher frequencies. Most objects of this class have spectral turn-overs or bends in their radio spectra. We interpret these spectra in terms of free-free absorption in the starburst environment. Several objects show radio spectra with two components having free-free turn-overs at different frequencies (including Arp 220 and Arp 299), indicating that synchrotron emission originates from regions with very different emission measures. In these sources, using a simple model for the supernova rate, we estimate the time for which synchrotron emission is subject to strong free-free absorption by ionized gas, and compare this to expected HII region lifetimes. We find that the ionized gas lifetimes are an order of magnitude larger than plausible lifetimes for individual HII regions. We discuss the implications of this result and argue that those sources which have a significant radio component with strong free-free absorption are those in which the star formation rate is still increasing with time. We note that if ionization losses modify the intrinsic synchrotron spectrum so that it steepens toward higher frequencies, the often observed deficit in fluxes higher than ~10 GHz would be much reduced.

The radio emission of normal galaxies may become opaque at low radio frequencies due to thermal ionized gas. We performed modelling of the free-free absorption to reproduce the ocal spectrum of SgrA Complex and the global spectrum of the starburst ga laxy M82. We show the importance of resolution of radio observations and the value of filling factor of the absorbing gas for correct modelling of the absorption.

We have observed the canonical gigahertz-peaked spectrum source 0108+388 with the VLBA at a range of frequencies above and below the spectral peak. The activity that dominates the radio emission from 0108+388, which is also classified as a Compact Sy mmetric Object, is thought to be less than 1000 years old. We present strong evidence that the spectral turnover in 0108+388 results from free-free absorption by non-uniform gas, possibly in the form of a disk in the central tens of parsecs.
There is a consensus in the literature that starburst galaxies are triggered by inter- action events. However, it remains an open question as to what extent both merging and non-merging interactions have in triggering starbursts? In this study, we ma ke use of the Illustris simulation to test how different triggering mechanisms can effect starburst events. We examine star formation rate, colour and environment of starburst galaxies to determine if this could be why we witness a bimodality in post-starburst populations within observational studies. Further, we briefly test the extent of quenching due to AGN feedback. From Illustris, we select 196 starburst galaxies at z = 0.15 and split them into post-merger and pre-merger/harassment driven starburst samples. We find that 55% of this sample not undergone a merger in the past 2 Gyr. Both of our samples are located in low-density environments within the filament regions of the cosmic web, however we find that pre-merger/harassment driven starburst are in higher density environments than post-merger driven starbursts. We also find that pre-merger/harassment starbursts are redder than post-merger starbursts, this could be driven by environmental effects. Both however, produce nuclear starbursts of comparable strengths.

Infrared quasi-stellar objects (IR QSOs) are a rare subpopulation selected from ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and have been regarded as promising candidates of ULIRG-to-optical QSO transition objects. Here we present NOEMA observations of the CO(1-0) line and 3 mm continuum emission in an IR QSO IRAS F07599+6508 at $z=0.1486$, which has many properties in common with Mrk 231. The CO emission is found to be resolved with a major axis of $sim$6.1 kpc that is larger than the size of $sim$4.0 kpc derived for 3 mm continuum. We identify two faint CO features located at a projected distance of $sim$11.4 and 19.1 kpc from the galaxy nucleus, respectively, both of which are found to have counterparts in the optical and radio bands and may have a merger origin. A systematic velocity gradient is found in the CO main component, suggesting that the bulk of molecular gas is likely rotationally supported. Based on the radio-to-millimeter spectral energy distribution and IR data, we estimate that about 30$%$ of the flux at 3 mm arises from free-free emission and infer a free-free-derived star formation rate of 77 $M_odot {rm yr^{-1}}$, close to the IR estimate corrected for the AGN contribution. We find a high-velocity CO emission feature at the velocity range of about -1300 to -2000 km s$^{-1}$. Additional deep CO observations are needed to confirm the presence of a possible very high-velocity CO extension of the OH outflow in this IR QSO.
We examine the absorption line spectra of a sample of 31 luminous (M_UV=-23) Lyman break galaxies at redshift z~6 using data taken with the FOCAS and OSIRIS spectrographs on the Subaru and GTC telescopes. For two of these sources we present longer ex posure data taken at higher spectral resolution from ESOs X-shooter spectrograph. Using these data, we demonstrate the practicality of stacking our lower resolution data to measure the depth of various interstellar and stellar absorption lines to probe the covering fraction of low ionization gas and the gas-phase and stellar metallicities near the end of the era of cosmic reionization. From maximum absorption line depths of SiII1260 and CII1334, we infer a mean covering fraction of >0.85+/-0.16 for our sample. This is larger than that determined using similar methods for lower luminosity galaxies at slightly lower redshifts, suggesting that the most luminous galaxies appear to have a lower escape fraction than fainter galaxies, and therefore may not play a prominent role in concluding reionization. Using various interstellar absorption lines we deduce gas-phase metallicities close to solar indicative of substantial early enrichment. Using selected stellar absorption lines, we model our spectra with a range of metallicities using techniques successfully employed at lower redshift and deduce a stellar metallicity of 0.4 +0.3/-0.1 solar, consistent with the stellar mass - stellar metallicity relation recently found at z~3-5. We discuss the implications of these metallicity estimates for the typical ages of our luminous galaxies and conclude our results imply initial star formation at redshifts z~10, consistent with independent analyses of earlier objects.
