Dynamics of a coarse-grained model for the room-temperature ionic liquid, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate, couched in the united-atom site representation are studied via molecular dynamics simulations. The dynamically heterogeneous behavior of the model resembles that of fragile supercooled liquids. At or close to room temperature, the model ionic liquid exhibits slow dynamics, characterized by nonexponential structural relaxation and subdiffusive behavior. The structural relaxation time, closely related to the viscosity, shows a super-Arrhenius behavior. Local excitations, defined as displacement of an ion exceeding a threshold distance, are found to be mainly responsible for structural relaxation in the alternating structure of cations and anions. As the temperature is lowered, excitations become progressively more correlated. This results in the decoupling of exchange and persistence times, reflecting a violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation.

We investigate the heterogeneity of dynamics, the breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation and fragility in a model glass forming liquid, a binary mixture of soft spheres with a harmonic interaction potential, for spatial dimensions from 3 to 8. Dyn amical heterogeneity is quantified through the dynamical susceptibility $chi_4$, and the non-Gaussian parameter $alpha_2$. We find that the fragility, the degree of breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein relation, as well as heterogeneity of dynamics, decrease with increasing spatial dimensionality. We briefly describe the dependence of fragility on density, and use it to resolve an apparent inconsistency with previous results.

Recently it was shown that the WAC model for liquid silica [L. V. Woodcock, C. A. Angell, and P. Cheeseman, J. Chem. Phys. 65, 1565 (1976)] is remarkably close to having a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP). We demonstrate that increasing the ion ch arge separates the global maxima of the response functions, while reducing the charge smoothly merges them into a LLCP; a phenomenon that might be experimentally observable with charged colloids. An analysis of the Si and O coordination numbers suggests that a sufficiently low Si/O coordination number ratio is needed to attain a LLCP.
Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) stand out among molecular liquids for their rich physicochemical characteristics, including structural and dynamic heterogeneity. The significance of electrostatic interactions in RTILs results in long character istic length- and timescales, and has motivated the development of a number of coarse-grained (CG) simulation models. In this study, we aim to better understand the connection between certain CG parametrization strategies and the dynamical properties and transferability of the resulting models. We systematically compare five CG models: a model largely parametrized from experimental thermodynamic observables; a refinement of this model to increase its structural accuracy; and three models that reproduce a given set of structural distribution functions by construction, with varying intramolecular parametrizations and reference temperatures. All five CG models display limited structural transferability over temperature, and also result in various effective dynamical speedup factors, relative to a reference atomistic model. On the other hand, the structure-based CG models tend to result in more consistent cation-anion relative diffusion than the thermodynamic-based models, for a single thermodynamic state point. By linking short- and long-timescale dynamical behaviors, we demonstrate that the varying dynamical properties of the different coarse-grained models can be largely collapsed onto a single curve, which provides evidence for a route to constructing dynamically-consistent CG models of RTILs.
We present a coarse-grained single-site potential for simulating chiral interactions, with adjustable strength, handedness, and preferred twist angle. As an application, we perform basin-hopping global optimisation to predict the favoured geometries for clusters of chiral rods. The morphology phase diagram based upon these predictions has four distinct families, including previously reported structures for potentials that introduce chirality based on shape, such as membranes and helices. The transition between these two configurations reproduces some key features of experimental results for {it{fd}} bacteriophage. The potential is computationally inexpensive, intuitive, and versatile; we expect it will be useful for large scale simulations of chiral molecules. For chiral particles confined in a cylindrical container we reproduce the behaviour observed for fusilli pasta in a jar. Hence this chiropole potential has the capability to provide insight into structures on both macroscopic and molecular length scales.
Recent experiments have found that applied electric fields can induce motion of skyrmions in chiral nematic liquid crystals. To understand the magnitude and direction of the induced motion, we develop a coarse-grained approach to describe dynamics of skyrmions, similar to our groups previous work on the dynamics of disclinations. In this approach, we represent a localized excitation in terms of a few macroscopic degrees of freedom, including the position of the excitation and the orientation of the background director. We then derive the Rayleigh dissipation function, and hence the equations of motion, in terms of these macroscopic variables. We demonstrate this theoretical approach for 1D motion of a sine-Gordon soliton, and then extend it to 2D motion of a skyrmion. Our results show that skyrmions move in a direction perpendicular to the induced tilt of the background director. When the applied field is removed, skyrmions move in the opposite direction but not with equal magnitude, and hence the overall motion may be rectified.
