We study worldsheet conformal invariance for bosonic string propagating in a curved background using the hamiltonian formalism. In order to formulate the problem in a background independent manner we first rewrite the worldsheet theory in a language where it describes a single particle moving in an infinite-dimensional curved spacetime. This language is developed at a formal level without regularizing the infinite-dimensional traces. Then we adopt DeWitts (Phys.Rev.85:653-661,1952) coordinate independent formulation of quantum mechanics in the present context. Given the expressions for the classical Virasoro generators, this procedure enables us to define the coordinate invariant quantum analogues which we call DeWitt-Virasoro generators. This framework also enables us to calculate the invariant matrix elements of an arbitrary operator constructed out of the DeWitt-Virasoro generators between two arbitrary scalar states. Using these tools we further calculate the DeWitt-Virasoro algebra in spin-zero representation. The result is given by the Witt algebra with additional anomalous terms that vanish for Ricci-flat backgrounds. Further analysis need to be performed in order to precisely relate this with the beta function computation of Friedan and others. Finally, we explain how this analysis improves the understanding of showing conformal invariance for certain pp-wave that has been recently discussed using hamiltonian framework.

Although the energy spectrum of the Heisenberg spin chain on a circle defined by $H=frac{1}{4}sum_{k=1}^M(sigma_k^xsigma_{k+1}^x+sigma_k^ysigma_{k+1}^y +Deltasigma_k^zsigma_{k+1}^z)$ is well known for any fixed $M$, the boundary conditions vary accor ding to whether $Min 4mathbb{N}+r$, where $r=-1,0,1,2$, and also according to the parity of the number of overturned spins in the state, In string theory all these cases must be allowed because interactions involve a string with $M$ spins breaking into strings with $M_1<M$ and $M-M_1$ spins (or vice versa). We organize the energy spectrum and degeneracies of $H$ in the case $Delta=0$ where the system is equivalent to a system of free fermions. In spite of the multiplicity of special cases, in the limit $Mtoinfty$ the spectrum is that of a free compactified worldsheet field. Such a field can be interpreted as a compact transverse string coordinate $x(sigma)equiv x(sigma)+R_0$. We construct the bosonization formulas explicitly in all separate cases, and for each sector give the Virasoro conformal generators in both fermionic and bosonic formulations. Furthermore from calculations in the literature for selected classes of excited states, there is strong evidence that the only change for $Delta eq0$ is a change in the compactification radius $R_0to R_Delta$. As $Deltato-1$ this radius goes to infinity, giving a concrete example of noncompact space emerging from a discrete dynamical system. Finally we apply our work to construct the three string vertex implied by a string whose bosonic coordinates emerge from this mechanism.
For a superstring theory in four spacetime dimensions, we propose a modification of the Born-Infeld action that possesses a well-defined tensionless limit. We interpret this as describing the effective target space dynamics of null strings on a D3-br ane. We argue that such a modification can be induced by nonperturbative contributions from instantons in the worldsheet sigma-model describing string propagation on the brane.

We analyze exact conformal invariance of string worldsheet theory in non-trivial backgrounds using hamiltonian framework. In the first part of this talk we consider the example of type IIB superstrings in Ramond-Ramond pp-wave background. In particul ar, we discuss the quantum definition of energy-momentum (EM) tensor and two methods of computing Virasoro algebra. One of the methods uses dynamical supersymmetries and indirectly establishes (partially) conformal invariance when the background is on-shell. We discuss the problem of operator ordering involved in the other method which attempts to compute the algebra directly. This method is supposed to work for off-shell backgrounds and therefore is more useful. In order to understand this method better we attempt a background independent formulation of the problem which is discussed in the second half of the talk. For a bosonic string moving in an arbitrary metric-background such a framework is obtained by following DeWitts work (Phys.Rev.85:653-661,1952) in the context of particle quantum mechanics. In particular, we construct certain background independent analogue of quantum Virasoro generators and show that in spin-zero representation they satisfy the Witt algebra with additional anomalous terms that vanish for Ricci-flat backgrounds. We also report on a new result which states that the same algebra holds true in arbitrary tensor representations as well.

We propose boundary conditions on a two dimensional 6-vertex model, which is defined on the lightcone lattice for an open string worldsheet. We show that, in the continuum limit, the degrees of freedom of this 6-vertex model describe a target space c oordinate compactified on a circle of radius R, which is related to the vertex weights. This conclusion had already been established for the case of a 6-vertex model on the worldsheet lattice for the propagator of a closed string. This exercise illustrates how the Bethe ansatz works in the presence of boundaries, at least of this particular type.
We develop a new background independent Moyal star formalism in bosonic open string field theory. The new star product is formulated in a half-phase-space, and because phase space is independent of any background fields, the interactions are backgrou nd independent. In this basis there is a large amount of symmetry, including a supersymmetry OSp(d|2) that acts on matter and ghost degrees of freedom, and simplifies computations. The BRST operator that defines the quadratic kinetic term of string field theory may be regarded as the solution of the equation of motion A*A=0 of a purely cubic background independent string field theory. We find an infinite number of non-perturbative solutions to this equation, and are able to associate them to the BRST operator of conformal field theories on the worldsheet. Thus, the background emerges from a spontaneous-type breaking of a purely cubic highly symmetric theory. The form of the BRST field breaks the symmetry in a tractable way such that the symmetry continues to be useful in practical perturbative computations as an expansion around some background. The new Moyal basis is called the $sigma $-basis, where $sigma$ is the worldsheet parameter of an open string. A vital part of the new star product is a natural and crucially needed mid-point regulator in this continuous basis, so that all computations are finite. The regulator is removed after renormalization and then the theory is finite only in the critical dimension. Boundary conditions for D-branes at the endpoints of the string are naturally introduced and made part of the theory as simple rules in algebraic computations. A byproduct of our approach is an astonishing suggestion of the formalism: the roots of ordinary quantum mechanics may originate in the rules of non-commutative interactions in string theory.
