We present temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and temperature- and field-dependent Raman scattering studies of single crystal Mn3O4, which reveal the novel magnetostructural phases that evolve in the spinels due to the interplay between strong spin-orbital coupling, geometric frustration, and applied magnetic field. We observe a structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic structures at the commensurate magnetic transition at T2=33K, show that the onset and nature of this structural transition can be controlled with an applied magnetic field, and find evidence for a field-tuned quantum phase transition to a tetragonal incommensurate or spin glass phase.

A detailed investigation on the structural and magneto-transport properties of iron intercalated Bi2Se3 single crystals have been presented. The x-ray diffraction and Raman studies confirm the intercalation of Fe in the van der Waals gaps between the layers. The electrical resistivity of the compounds decreases upon intercalation, and Hall resistivity shows the enhancement of the charge carriers upon intercalation. The magnetoresistance shows the non-saturating linear behavior at higher magnetic field and low temperature. Intercalation of Fe increases the onset of the linear magnetoresistance behavior, indicating the reduction in quantum effects. The Kohler scaling employed on the magnetoresistance data indicates single scattering process for all these compounds in the measured temperature range of 3- 300 K.

The highly insulating antiferromagnetic phase of the magnetic- organic conductor lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 has been probed by resonant mm wave methods vs. magnetic field, temperature, and frequency. Our results show evidence for magnetic sub-phases within the temperature-field phase diagram as previously predicted by Brossard et al. [Eur. Phys. J. B 1, 439(1998)].
Magneto-acoustic investigations of the frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 were performed for the longitudinal modes c11 and c33 in magnetic fields along the a-axis. The temperature dependence of the sound velocity at zero field sh ows a mild softening at low temperature and displays a small kink-like anomaly at TN. Isothermal measurements at T < TN of the sound attenuation reveal two closely-spaced features of different character on approaching the materials quantum-critical point (QCP) around Bs = 8.5 T for B // a. The peak at slightly lower fields remains sharp down to the lowest temperature and can be attributed to the ordering temperature TN(B). The second anomaly which is rounded and which becomes reduced in size upon cooling is assigned to the materials spin-liquid properties preceding the long-range antiferromagnetic ordering. These two features merge upon cooling suggesting a coincidence at the QCP. The elastic constant at lowest temperatures of our experiment at 32 mK can be well described by a Landau free energy model with a very small magnetoelastic coupling constant G/kB = 2.8 K. The applicability of this classical model indicates the existence of a small gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum which drives the system away from quantum criticality.
The structural distortion and magnetoelastic coupling induced through commensurate magnetism has been investigated by neutron diffraction in structurally related MnWO$_4$ and NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$. Both systems exhibit a competition of incommensurate spir al and commensurate spin up-up-down-down ordering along the magnetic chains. In the latter commensurate phases, the alternatingly parallel and antiparallel arrangement of Fe$^{3+}$ respectively Mn$^{2+}$ moments leads to sizeable bond-angle modulation and thus to magnetic dimerization. For NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$ this structural distortion has been determined to be strongest for the low-field up-up-down-down arrangement, and the structural refinement yields a bond-angle modulation of $pm 1.15(16)$ degrees. In the commensurate phase of MnWO$_4$, superstructure reflections signal a comparable structural dimerization and thus strong magneto-elastic coupling different to that driving the multiferroic order. Pronounced anharmonic second- and third-order reflections in the incommensurate and multiferroic phase of MnWO$_4$ result from tiny commensurate fractions that can depin multiferroic domains.

We investigated the series of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe$_2$O$_4$ by optical and M{o}ssbauer spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering in order to understand the interplay between charge, structure, and magnetism in th is multiferroic material. We demonstrate that charge fluctuation has an onset well below the charge ordering transition, supporting the order by fluctuation mechanism for the development of charge order superstructure. Bragg splitting and large magneto optical contrast suggest a low temperature monoclinic distortion that can be driven by both temperature and magnetic field.
