We present temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction and temperature- and field-dependent Raman scattering studies of single crystal Mn3O4, which reveal the novel magnetostructural phases that evolve in the spinels due to the interplay between strong spin-orbital coupling, geometric frustration, and applied magnetic field. We observe a structural transition from tetragonal to monoclinic structures at the commensurate magnetic transition at T2=33K, show that the onset and nature of this structural transition can be controlled with an applied magnetic field, and find evidence for a field-tuned quantum phase transition to a tetragonal incommensurate or spin glass phase.
A detailed investigation on the structural and magneto-transport properties of iron intercalated Bi2Se3 single crystals have been presented. The x-ray diffraction and Raman studies confirm the intercalation of Fe in the van der Waals gaps between the
The highly insulating antiferromagnetic phase of the magnetic- organic conductor lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 has been probed by resonant mm wave methods vs. magnetic field, temperature, and frequency. Our results show evidence for magnetic sub-phases within
Magneto-acoustic investigations of the frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs2CuCl4 were performed for the longitudinal modes c11 and c33 in magnetic fields along the a-axis. The temperature dependence of the sound velocity at zero field sh
The structural distortion and magnetoelastic coupling induced through commensurate magnetism has been investigated by neutron diffraction in structurally related MnWO$_4$ and NaFe(WO$_4$)$_2$. Both systems exhibit a competition of incommensurate spir
We investigated the series of temperature and field-driven transitions in LuFe$_2$O$_4$ by optical and M{o}ssbauer spectroscopies, magnetization, and x-ray scattering in order to understand the interplay between charge, structure, and magnetism in th
