Excited states in $^{212}$Po were populated by $alpha$ transfer using the $^{208}$Pb($^{18}$O, $^{14}$C) reaction and their deexcitation $gamma$-rays were studied with the Euroball array. Several levels were found to decay by a unique E1 transition (E$_gamma <$ 1 MeV) populating the yrast state with the same spin value. Their lifetimes were measured by the DSAM method. The values, found in the range [0.1-1.4] ps, lead to very enhanced transitions, B(E1) = 2$times10^{-2}$ - 1$times10^{-3}$ W.u.. These results are discussed in terms of an $alpha$-cluster structure which gives rise to states with non-natural parity values, provided that the composite system cannot rotate collectively, as expected in the $alpha$ + $^{208}$Pb case. Such states due to the oscillatory motion of the $alpha$-core distance are observed for the first time.

Information on the size and shape of the neutron skin on $^{208}$Pb has been extracted from coherent pion photoproduction cross sections measured using the Crystal Ball together with the Glasgow tagger at the MAMI electron beam facility. On exploitat ion of an interpolated fit of a theoretical model to the measured cross sections the half-height radius and diffuseness of the neutron distribution are found to be 6.70$pm 0.03(stat)$ fm and 0.55$pm 0.01(stat)$$^{+0.02}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm respectively, corresponding to a neutron skin thickness $Delta r_{np}$=0.15$pm 0.03(stat)$$^{+0.01}_{-0.03}(sys)$ fm. The results give the first successful extraction of a neutron skin with an electromagnetic probe and indicate the skin of $^{208}$Pb has a halo character. The measurement provides valuable new constraints on both the structure of nuclei and the equation of state for neutron-rich matter.
The neutron-rich $^{213}$Pb isotope was produced in the fragmentation of a primary 1 GeV $A$ $^{238}$U beam, separated in FRS in mass and atomic number, and then implanted for isomer decay $gamma$-ray spectroscopy with the RISING setup at GSI. A newl y observed isomer and its measured decay properties indicate that states in $^{213}$Pb are characterized by the seniority quantum number that counts the nucleons not in pairs coupled to angular momentum $J=0$. The conservation of seniority is a consequence of the Berry phase associated with particle-hole conjugation, which becomes gauge invariant and therefore observable in semi-magic nuclei where nucleons half-fill the valence shell. The $gamma$-ray spectroscopic observables in $^{213}$Pb are thus found to be driven by two mechanisms, particle-hole conjugation and seniority conservation, which are intertwined through the Berry phase.
The half-life of $^{212}$Po was measured with the highest up-to-date accuracy as $T_{1/2}=295.1(4)$ ns by using thorium-loaded liquid scintillator.
The fragmentation of quasi-projectiles from the nuclear reaction $^{40}Ca$ + $^{12}C$ at 25 MeV/nucleon was used to produce excited states candidates to $alpha$-particle condensation. The experiment was performed at LNS-Catania using the CHIMERA mult idetector. Accepting the emission simultaneity and equality among the $alpha$-particle kinetic energies as experimental criteria for deciding in favor of the condensate nature of an excited state, we analyze the $0_2^+$ and $2_2^+$ states of $^{12}$C and the $0_6^+$ state of $^{16}$O. A sub-class of events corresponding to the direct 3-$alpha$ decay of the Hoyle state is isolated.
Dissipative 12C+12C reactions at 95 MeV are fully detected in charge with the GARFIELD and RCo apparatuses at LNL. A comparison to a dedicated Hauser-Feshbach calculation allows to select events which correspond, to a large extent, to the statistical evaporation of highly excited 24Mg, as well as to extract information on the isotopic distribution of the evaporation residues in coincidence with their complete evaporation chain. Residual deviations from a statistical behaviour are observed in alpha yields and attributed to the persistence of cluster correlations well above the 24Mg threshold for 6 alphas decay.
