By exploiting the concepts of magnetic group theory we show how unidirectional behavior can be obtained in two-dimensional magneto-photonic crystals (MOPhC) with uniform magnetization. This group theory approach generalizes all previous investigations of one-way MOPhCs including those based on the use of antiparallel magnetic domains in the elementary crystal cell. Here, the theoretical approach is illustrated for one MOPhC example where unidirectional behavior is obtained by appropriately lowering the geometrical symmetry of the elementary motifs. One-way transmission is numerically demonstrated for a photonic crystal slice.

By means of the plane wave method, we study nonuniform, i.e., mode- and k-dependent, effects in the spin-wave spectrum of a two-dimensional bicomponent magnonic crystal. We use the crystal based on a hexagonal lattice squeezed in the direction of the external magnetic field wherein the squeezing applies to the lattice and the shape of inclusions. The squeezing changes both the demagnetizing field and the spatial confinement of the excitation, which may lead to the occurrence of an omnidirectional magnonic band gaps. In particular, we study the role played by propagational effects, which allows us to explain the k-dependent softening of modes. The effects we found enabled us not only to design the width and position of magnonic band gaps, but also to plan their response to a change in the external magnetic field magnitude. This allows the reversible tuning of magnonic band gaps, and it shows that the studied structures are promising candidates for designing magnonic devices that are tunable during operation.

Kirchhoff s law is one of the most fundamental law in thermal radiation. The violation of traditional Kirchhoff s law provides opportunities for higher energy conversion efficiency. Various micro-structures have been proposed to realize single-band n onreciprocal thermal emitters. However, dual-band nonreciprocal thermal emitters remain barely investigated. In this paper, we introduce magneto-optical material into a cascading one-dimensional (1-D) magnetophotonic crystal (MPC) heterostructure composed of two 1-D MPCs and a metal layer. Assisted by the nonreciprocity of the magneto-optical material and the coupling effect of two optical Tamm states (OTSs), a dual-band nonreciprocal lithography-free thermal emitter is achieved. The emitter exhibits strong dual-band nonreciprocal radiation at the wavelengths of 15.337 um and 15.731 um when the external magnetic field is 3 T and the angle of incidence is 56 degree. Besides, the magnetic field distribution is also calculated to confirm that the dual-band nonreciprocal radiation originates from the coupling effect between two OTSs. Our work may pave the way for constructing dual-band and multi-band nonreciprocal thermal emitters.

Unidirectional reflectionless propagation (or transmission) is an interesting wave phenomenon observed in many $mathcal{PT}$-symmetric optical structures. Theoretical studies on unidirectional reflectionless transmission often use simple coupled-mode models. The coupled-mode theory can reveal the most important physical mechanism for this wave phenomenon, but it is only an approximate theory, and it does not provide accurate quantitative predictions with respect to geometric and material parameters of the structure. In this paper, we rigorously study unidirectional reflectionless transmission for two-dimensional (2D) $mathcal{PT}$-symmetric periodic structures sandwiched between two homogeneous media. Using a scattering matrix formalism and a perturbation method, we show that real zero-reflection frequencies are robust under $mathcal{PT}$-symmetric perturbations, and unidirectional reflectionless transmission is guaranteed to occur if the perturbation (of the dielectric function) satisfies a simple condition. Numerical examples are presented to validate the analytical results, and to demonstrate unidirectional invisibility by tuning the amplitude of balanced gain and loss.
We present a flexible method that can calculate Bloch modes, complex band structures, and impedances of two-dimensional photonic crystals from scattering data produced by widely available numerical tools. The method generalizes previous work which re lied on specialized multipole and FEM techniques underpinning transfer matrix methods. We describe the numerical technique for mode extraction, and apply it to calculate a complex band structure and to design two photonic crystal antireflection coatings. We do this for frequencies at which other methods fail, but which nevertheless are of significant practical interest.
We demonstrate theoretically the existence of one-way Tamm plasmon-polaritons on the interface between magnetophotonic crystals and conducting metal oxides. In contrast to conventional surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs), Tamm plasmon-polariton (TPPs) occur at frequencies above the bulk plasma frequency of the conducting materials, provided that the dispersion curves of such surface modes lie outside the light cone for the conducting oxides and simultaneously fall into the photonic band gap of the magnetophotonic crystal. The nonreciprocal properties of TPPs are caused by violation of the periodicity and time reversal symmetry in the structure. Calculations on the field distribution and transmission spectra through the structure are employed to confirm the theoretical results, which could potentially impact on a broad range of SPP-related phenomena in applications.
