We explore direct collider probes of the resonant leptogenesis mechanism for the origin of matter. We work in the context of theories where the Standard Model is extended to include an additional gauged U(1) symmetry broken at the TeV scale, and where the light neutrinos obtain mass through a Type I seesaw at this scale. The CP asymmetry that generates the observed matter-antimatter asymmetry manifests itself in a difference between the number of positive and negative like-sign dileptons N(ell^+ell^+)-N(ell^-ell^-) that arise in the decay of the new Z gauge boson to two right-handed neutrinos N, and their subsequent decay to leptons. The relatively low efficiency of resonant leptogenesis in this class of models implies that the CP asymmetry, epsilon, is required to be sizable, i.e. of order one. In particular, from the sign of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, emph{an excess of antileptons is predicted}. We identify the domains in M_{Z}--M_N space where such a direct test is possible and find that with 300~fb^{-1} of data and no excess found, the LHC can set the $2sigma$ exclusion limit epsilon lesssim 0.22.

It is well known that the leptogenesis mechanism offers an attractive possibility to explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe. Its particular robustness however comes with one major difficulty: it will be very hard if not impossible to test exper imentally in a foreseeable future, as most of the mechanics typically takes place at high energy or results from suppressed interactions, without unavoidable low-energy implications. An alternate approach is taken by asking: can it be at least falsified? We show that possible discoveries at current and future colliders, most notably that of right-handed gauge interactions, would indeed forbid at least the canonical leptogenesis mechanisms, namely those based on right-handed neutrino decay. General lower bounds for successful leptogenesis on the mass of the right-handed gauge boson W_R are given. Other possibilities to falsify leptogenesis, including from the observation of a Z, are also considered.
The focus of this chapter lies on the possible experimental tests of leptogenesis scenarios. We consider both leptogenesis generated from oscillations, as well as leptogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays. As the Akhmedov-Rubakov-Smirnov (ARS) mech anism allows for heavy neutrinos in the GeV range, this opens up a plethora of possible experimental tests, e.g. at neutrino oscillation experiments, neutrinoless double beta decay, and direct searches for neutral heavy leptons at future facilities. In contrast, testing leptogenesis from out-of-equilibrium decays is a quite difficult task. We comment on the necessary conditions for having successful leptogenesis at the TeV-scale. We further discuss possible realizations and their model specific testability in extended seesaw models, models with extended gauge sectors, and supersymmetric leptogenesis. Not being able to test high-scale leptogenesis directly, we present a way to falsify such scenarios by focusing on their washout processes. This is discussed specifically for the left-right symmetric model and the observation of a heavy $W_R$, as well as model independently when measuring $Delta L = 2$ washout processes at the LHC or neutrinoless double beta decay.
It has been recently shown that the quantum Boltzmann equations may be relevant for the leptogenesis scenario. In particular, they lead to a time-dependent CP asymmetry which depends upon the previous dynamics of the system. This memory effect in the CP asymmetry is particularly important in resonant leptogenesis where the asymmetry is generated by the decays of nearly mass-degenerate right-handed neutrinos. We study the impact of the nontrivial time evolution of the CP asymmetry in resonant leptogenesis, both in the one-flavour case and with flavour effects included. We show that significant qualitative and quantitative differences arise with respect to the case in which the time dependence of the CP asymmetry is neglected.
Leptogenesis can successfully explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry via out-of-equilibrium decays of heavy Majorana neutrinos in the early Universe. In this article, we focus on non-resonant thermal leptogenesis and the possibility of lowering its scale. In order to do so, we calculate the lepton asymmetry produced from the decays of one and two heavy Majorana neutrinos using three-flavoured density matrix equations in an exhaustive exploration of the model parameter space. We find regions of the parameter space where thermal leptogenesis is viable at intermediate scales, $Tsim 10^{6}$ GeV. However, the viability of thermal leptogenesis at such scales requires a certain degree of cancellation between the tree and one-loop level contribution to the light neutrino mass matrix and we quantify such fine-tuning.
Vanilla leptogenesis within the type I seesaw framework requires the mass scale of the right-handed neutrinos to be above 10^9 GeV. This lower bound can be avoided if at least two of the sterile states are almost mass degenerate, which leads to an en hancement of the decay asymmetry. Leptogenesis models that can be tested in current and upcoming experiments often rely on this resonant enhancement, and a systematic and consistent description is therefore necessary for phenomenological applications. In this review article, we give an overview of different methods that have been used to study the saturation of the resonant enhancement when the mass difference becomes comparable to the characteristic width of the Majorana neutrinos. In this limit, coherent flavor transitions start to play a decisive role, and off-diagonal correlations in flavor space have to be taken into account. We compare various formalisms that have been used to describe the resonant regime and discuss under which circumstances the resonant enhancement can be captured by simplified expressions for the CP asymmetry. Finally, we briefly review some of the phenomenological aspects of resonant leptogenesis.
