We examine the metallicity and age of a large set of SDSS/DR6 galaxies that may be Blue Compact Dwarf (BCD) galaxies during quiescence (QBCDs).The individual spectra are first classified and then averaged to reduce noise. The metallicity inferred from emission lines (tracing ionized gas) exceeds by ~0.35 dex the metallicity inferred from absorption lines (tracing stars). Such a small difference is significant according to our error budget estimate. The same procedure was applied to a reference sample of BCDs, and in this case the two metallicities agree, being also consistent with the stellar metallicity in QBCDs. Chemical evolution models indicate that the gas metallicity of QBCDs is too high to be representative of the galaxy as a whole, but it can represent a small fraction of the galactic gas, self enriched by previous starbursts. The luminosity weighted stellar age of QBCDs spans the whole range between 1 and 10 Gyr, whereas it is always smaller than 1 Gyr for BCDs. Our stellar ages and metallicities rely on a single stellar population spectrum fitting procedure, which we have specifically developed for this work using the stellar library MILES.

This is the fourth paper in a series studying star formation rates, stellar components, metallicities, and star formation histories of a blue compact galaxy (BCG) sample. Using Ha, [OII]3727, IR, radio (1.4GHz) luminosities and neutral hydrogen gas m asses, we estimated star formation rates(SFR) and gas depletion timescales of 72 star-forming BCGs. The SFRs of the BCGs in our sample span nearly four orders of magnitude, from approximately 10^-2 to 10^2M_sun/yr, with a median SFR of about 3M_sun/yr. The typical gas depletion timescale of BCGs is about one billion years. We found that subtracting underlying stellar absorption is very important to calculate both dust extinction and SFR of galaxies. Otherwise, the intrinsic extinction will be overestimated, the SFRs derived from [OII] and Ha will be underestimated (if the underlying stellar absorption and the internal extinction were not corrected from the observed luminosity) or overestimated (if an overestimated internal extinction were used for extinction correction). After both the underlying stellar absorption and the dust extinction were corrected, a remarkably good correlation emerges among Ha, [OII], IR and radio SFR indicators. Finally, we find a good correlation between the measured SFR and the absolute blue magnitude, metallicity, interstellar extinction of BCGs. Our results indicate that faint, low-mass BCGs have lower star formation rates.
Dwarf galaxies are generally faint. To derive their age and metallicity distributions, it is critical to optimize the use of any collected photon. Koleva et al., using full spectrum fitting, have found strong population gradients in some dwarf ellipt ical galaxies. Here, we show that the population profiles derived with this method are consistent and more precise than those obtained with spectrophotometric indices. This allows studying fainter objects in less telescope time.
We study dwarf galaxy formation at high redshift ($zge5$) using a suite of high- resolution, cosmological hydrodynamic simulations and a semi-analytic model (SAM). We focus on gas accretion, cooling and star formation in this work by isolating the re levant process from reionization and supernova feedback, which will be further discussed in a companion paper. We apply the SAM to halo merger trees constructed from a collisionless N-body simulation sharing identical initial conditions to the hydrodynamic suite, and calibrate the free parameters against the stellar mass function predicted by the hydrodynamic simulations at z = 5. By making comparisons of the star formation history and gas components calculated by the two modelling techniques, we find that semi-analytic prescriptions that are commonly adopted in the literature of low-redshift galaxy formation do not accurately represent dwarf galaxy properties in the hydrodynamic simulation at earlier times. We propose 3 modifications to SAMs that will provide more accurate high-redshift simulations. These include 1) the halo mass and baryon fraction which are overestimated by collisionless N-body simulations; 2) the star formation efficiency which follows a different cosmic evolutionary path from the hydrodynamic simulation; and 3) the cooling rate which is not well defined for dwarf galaxies at high redshift. Accurate semi-analytic modelling of dwarf galaxy formation informed by detailed hydrodynamical modelling will facilitate reliable semi-analytic predictions over the large volumes needed for the study of reionization.

We present Spitzer IRS spectra and MIPS photometry of 12 radio-loud QSOs with FR II morphologies at z ~ 0.3. Six of the sources are surrounded by luminous extended emission-line regions (EELRs), while the other six do not have such extended nebulae. The two subsamples are indistinguishable in their mid-infrared spectra and overall infrared spectral energy distributions (SEDs). For both subsamples, the mid-infrared aromatic features are undetected in either individual sources or their stacked spectra, and the SEDs are consistent with pure quasar emission without significant star formation. The upper limits to the star formation rate are sufficiently low that starburst-driven superwinds can be ruled out as a mechanism for producing the EELRs, which are instead likely the result of the ejection of most of the gas from the system by blast waves accompanying the launching of the radio jets. The FR II quasars deviate systematically from the correlation between host galaxy star formation rate and black hole accretion rate apparently followed by radio-quiet QSOs, implying little or no bulge growth coeval with the current intensive black hole growth. We also present a new Spitzer estimate of the star formation rate for the starburst in the host galaxy of the compact steep-spectrum radio quasar 3C 48.
We present optical VLT spectroscopy of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (or dEs) comparable in mass to NGC 205, and belonging to the Fornax cluster and to nearby groups of galaxies. Using ULySS and STECKMAP, we derive radial profiles of the SSP-equivalen t ages, metallicities and star-formation histories. The old stellar population of the dEs, which dominates their mass, is likely coeval with that of massive ellipticals or bulges, but the star formation efficiency is lower. Important intermediate age (1-5 Gyr) populations, and frequently tails of star formation until recent times are detected. These histories are reminiscent of their lower mass dSph counterparts of the Local Group. Most galaxies (10/16) show significant metallicity gradients, with metallicity declining by 0.5 dex over one half-light radius on average. These gradients are already present in the old population. The flattened (or discy), rotating objects (6/16) have flat metallicity profiles. This may be consistent with a distinct origin for these galaxies or it may be due to their geometry. The central SSP-equivalent age varies between 1 and 6 Gyr, with the age slowly increasing with radius in the vast majority of objects. The group and cluster galaxies have similar radial gradients and star-formation histories. The strong and old metallicity gradients place important constraints on the possible formation scenarios of dEs. Numerical simulations of the formation of spherical low-mass galaxies reproduce these gradients, but they require a longer time for them to build up. A gentle depletion of the gas, by ram-pressure stripping or starvation, could drive the gas-rich, star-forming progenitors to the present dEs.
