Using the random matrix theory, we investigate the ensemble statistics of edge transport of a quantum spin Hall insulator with multiple edge states in the presence of quenched disorder. Dorokhov-Mello-Pereyra-Kumar equation applicable for such a system is established. It is found that a two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulator is effectively a new type of one-dimensional (1D) quantum conductor with the different ensemble statistics from that of the ordinary 1D quantum conductor or the insulator with an even number of Kramers edge pairs. The ensemble statistics provides a physical manifestation of the Z2-classification for the time-reversal invariant insulators.

We study electron transport through a multichannel fractional quantum Hall edge in the presence of both interchannel interaction and random tunneling between channels, with emphasis on the role of contacts. The prime example in our discussion is the edge at filling factor 2/3 with two counterpropagating channels. Having established a general framework to describe contacts to a multichannel edge as thermal reservoirs, we particularly focus on the line-junction model for the contacts and investigate incoherent charge transport for an arbitrary strength of interchannel interaction beneath the contacts and, possibly different, outside them. We show that the conductance does not explicitly depend on the interaction strength either in or outside the contact regions (implicitly, it only depends through renormalization of the tunneling rates). Rather, a long line-junction contact is characterized by a single parameter which defines the modes that are at thermal equilibrium with the contact and is determined by the interplay of various types of scattering beneath the contact. This parameter -- playing the role of an effective interaction strength within an idealized model of thermal reservoirs -- is generically nonzero and affects the conductance. We formulate a framework of fractionalization-renormalized tunneling to describe the effect of disorder on transport in the presence of interchannel interaction. Within this framework, we give a detailed discussion of charge equilibration for arbitrarily strong interaction in the bulk of the edge and arbitrary effective interaction characterizing the line-junction contacts.
Time-reversal invariant two-dimensional topological insulators, often dubbed Quantum Spin Hall systems, possess helical edge modes whose ballistic transport is protected by physical symmetries. We argue that, though the time-reversal symmetry (TRS) o f the bulk is needed for the existence of helicity, protection of the helical transport is actually provided by the spin conservation on the edges. This general statement is illustrated by specific examples. One example demonstrates the ballistic conductance in the setup where the TRS on the edge is broken. It shows that attributing the symmetry protection exclusively to the TRS is not entirely correct. Another example reveals weakness of the protection in the case where helical transport is governed by a space-fluctuating spin-orbit interaction. Our results demonstrate the fundamental importance of the spin conservation analysis for the identification of mechanisms which may (or may not) lead to suppression of the ballistic helical transport.
In this communication, we numerically studied disordered quantum transport in a quantum anomalous Hall insulator-superconductor junction based on the effective edge model approach. In particular, we focus on the parameter regime with the free mean pa th due to elastic scattering much smaller than the sample size and discuss disordered transport behaviors in the presence of different numbers of chiral edge modes, as well as non-chiral metallic modes. Our numerical results demonstrate that the presence of multiple chiral edge modes or non-chiral metallic modes will lead to a strong Andreev conversion, giving rise to half-electron half-hole transmission through the junction structure, in sharp contrast to the suppression of Andreev conversion in the single chiral edge mode case. Our results suggest the importance of additional transport modes in the quantum anomalous Hall insulator-superconductor junction and will guide the future transport measurements.

Statistical properties of critical wave functions at the spin quantum Hall transition are studied both numerically and analytically (via mapping onto the classical percolation). It is shown that the index $eta$ characterizing the decay of wave functi on correlations is equal to 1/4, at variance with the $r^{-1/2}$ decay of the diffusion propagator. The multifractality spectra of eigenfunctions and of two-point conductances are found to be close-to-parabolic, $Delta_qsimeq q(1-q)/8$ and $X_qsimeq q(3-q)/4$.
We have performed magnetotransport measurements on a multi-layer graphene flake. At the crossing magnetic field Bc, an approximately temperature-independent point in the measured longitudinal resistivity, which is ascribed to the direct insulator-qua ntum Hall (I-QH) transition, is observed. By analyzing the amplitudes of the magnetoresistivity oscillations, we are able to measure the quantum mobility of our device. It is found that at the direct I-QH transition, the product of the quantum mobility and is about 0.37 which is considerably smaller than 1. In contrast, at Bc, the longitudinal resistivity is close to the Hall resistivity, i.e., the product of the classical mobility and the crossing field is about 1. Therefore our results suggest that different mobilities need to be introduced for the direct I-QH transition observed in multi-layered graphene. Combined with existing experimental results obtained in various material systems, our data obtained on graphene suggest that the direct I-QH transition is a universal effect in 2D.
