The production of K+ and K- mesons below and at the NN threshold is summarized, based on a comparison of data with transport model calculations. K+ mesons are created in associate production together with hyperons (e.g. Lambda) in multi-step processes involving Delta resonances. These processes occur mainly during the high-density phase of the collision and this makes the K+ an ideal tool to extract the stiffness of the nuclear equation of state, found to be rather soft with a compressibility modulus K below 240 MeV. In contrast, the major part of K- mesons are produced via strangeness exchange. Most of the created K- are absorbed and the surviving ones are emitted quite late and at low densities.

Prospects for strangeness production in pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are discussed within the statistical model. Firstly, the system size and the energy dependence of the model parameters are extracted from existing data and extra polated to LHC energy. Particular attention is paid to demonstrate that the chemical decoupling temperature is independent of the system size. In the energy regime investigated so far, strangeness production in pp interactions is strongly influenced by the canonical suppression effects. At LHC energies, this influence might be reduced. Particle ratios with particular sensitivity to canonical effects are indicated. Secondly, the relation between the strangeness production and the charged-particle multiplicity in pp interactions is investigated. In this context the multiplicity dependence studied at Tevatron is of particular interest. There, the trend in relative strangeness production known from centrality dependent heavy-ion collisions is not seen in multiplicity selected pp interactions. However, the conclusion from the Tevatron measurements is based on rather limited data samples with low statistics and number of observables. We argue, that there is an absolute need at LHC to measure strangeness production in events with different multiplicities to possibly disentangle relations and differences between particle production in pp and heavy-ion collisions.
The open strangeness production near threshold is investigated at the internal experiment COSY-11 in different reaction channels. Recently, the main focus has been to extend measurements of the hyperon production pp->pK+Lambda/Sigma0 in different iso spin channels as well as the associated strangeness production in pp->ppK+K-. The experimental technique is based on the reconstruction of the four momentum for all positively charged ejectiles. Neutrons are detected in addition using a neutral particle detector. The unregistered hyperon or meson is identified by means of the missing mass technique. The present status of the analysis for both reaction channels is presented. In case of the reaction pp->ppK+K-, very preliminary cross sections are shown.
New experimental data on transverse momentum spectra of strange particles (KS0, K-, K*, phi,...) produced in pp collisions at sqrt s = 200 GeV obtained by the STAR and PHENIX collaborations at RHIC are analysed in the framework of z-scaling approach. Scaling properties of the data z-presentation are illustrated. Self-similarity of strange particle production is discussed. A microscopic scenario of constituent interactions developed within the z-scaling approach is used to study constituent energy loss, proton momentum fraction and recoil mass in dependence on the transverse momentum, strangeness, and mass of the inclusive particle. The obtained results can be useful for understanding strangeness origin, for searching for new physics with strange probes and can serve as a benchmark for complex analyses of self-similar features of strange production in heavy ion collisions.
A study of the horn in the particle ratio $K^+/pi^+$ for central heavy-ion collisions as a function of the collision energy $sqrt{s}$ is presented. We analyse two different interpretations: the onset of deconfinement and the transition from a baryon- to a meson-dominated hadron gas. We use a realistic equation of state (EOS), which includes both hadron and quark degrees-of-freedom. The Taub-adiabate procedure is followed to determine the system at the early stage. Our results do not support an explanation of the horn as due to the onset of deconfinement. Using only hadronic EOS we reproduced the energy dependence of the $K^+/pi^+$ and $Lambda/pi^-$ ratios employing an experimental parametrisation of the freeze-out curve. We observe a transition between a baryon- and a meson-dominated regime; however, the reproduction of the $K^+/pi^+$ and $Lambda/pi^-$ ratios as a function of $sqrt{s}$ is not completely satisfying. We finally propose a new idea for the interpretation of the data, the roll-over scheme, in which the scalar meson field $sigma$ has not reached the thermal equilibrium at freeze-out. The rool-over scheme for the equilibration of the $sigma$-field is based on the inflation mechanism. The non-equilibrium evolution of the scalar field influences the particle production, e.g. $K^+/pi^+$, however, the fixing of the free parameters in this model is still an open issue.
We present the N_f=2+1 clover fermion lattice QCD calculation of the nucleon strangeness form factors. We evaluate disconnected insertions using the Z(4) stochastic method, along with unbiased subtractions from the hopping parameter expansion. We fin d that increasing the number of nucleon sources for each configuration improves the signal significantly. We obtain G_M^s(0) = -0.017(25)(07), where the first error is statistical, and the second is the uncertainties in Q^2 and chiral extrapolations. This is consistent with experimental values, and has an order of magnitude smaller error.
